Posted: Fri Apr 13, 2012 10:00 am Post subject: [SQEX-W5] The annual finally final SQUAREENIX WEEK 5 |
|
|
and once again, it is time to celebrate all things SQEX. Grab that copy of [title] that you have been hidin' away for years, now it's time to play that sucker (and realise that, indeed, it was a good decision to hide it away).
And as the "finally final" implies, for the last time!
… Maybe. Probably final though!
Even if the IIIrd strike is still around, nobody can remember what happened last time, since the axe pruned that properly. Fear not, you didn't miss much, since
- I've spotted Front Mission Evolved in a shop
- someone rocked through FF1 & 2
- glasses where clinked in a bavarian restaurant with Thailanders
- some drakengard sample-ripping took place (with typo, left intact for a year now)
- BA was finished
- a car was bought
- and some tactics ogre and twewy'ing took place.
Sounds better than it actually was? Hell yeah.
Inspired by the quite awesome FF7-replay of a fellow SBer, nothing could sum up the spirit of this week better than the following quote:
| Quote: |
| … WHEN WE LAST LEFT, AERIS/AERITH/ALICE/WHATEVER WAS FUCKING DEAD. |
→ I'd love to request a follow up on that topic/replay at this point!
In any case, get scratchin' and do something SQEX-related. Whatever that is, be sure to share!
Alas:
sto- ahem, inspired by …

| I just beat ff13 last night (ugh) and tonight or tomorrow will start ff13-2. Oh yeah, fuck modern SQEX. Gonna have to insert some R.Kelly into it. |

I guess I'll continue my journey of Nier that I barely touched after that drunken playthrough a month or so previous.
Or throw TWEWY into my DS that's on its way out. It had a bitching soundtrack. |

My bro's bringing over 13-2 again tonight. We'll keep an eye out for tragically hilarious shit.
A snippet from the 13-2 demo thread, about the first time we played it last weekend:
| Flylighter wrote: |
The only thing that stuck out to me was the QTEs. Apparently if you hit the buttons spot-on it can cause different movies to happen or whatever, but here's the thing. In the QTEs whenever you whale on the boss, random numbers pop out each time you hit whatever the fuck you're fighting. But there's no health bar. And it's a QTE so it doesn't really end until it's supposed to, so like, there's absolutely no context whatsoever to the damage numbers. In the first one, you fight the boss, then it cuts to a QTE, then it cuts to another phase of the fight and the dude has full health again. So like, what did those numbers in the QTE mean.
Closest I figured was,
The FF Universe is one in which numbers pop out of things when you hit them. |
So yeah. Should be (sort of) fun.
Also I'd play TWEWY but my DS crapped out as soon as I brought it back from my Christmas trip to Florida :( _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

Technically you wouldn't be allowed to play anything recent except FF[huge number], so yeah, go ahead and play whatever you want. Have fun! Share the fun stuff and it's a go-go.

This I'd love to see. If you would do so, you're welcome!
As teased before, I'm finally, after all those years, playing Chrono Cross. And since I've recently discovered the manual settings of my mobilephone-cam, I'll fuck up all the retro-shots like I did in that teaser-vid.
I absolutely have to get some more time with CC, but if there is one thing I can already say, it is the fact that I can appreciate some small things in this game that I wouldn't have noticed, back when I tried playing it the first time in … uh, 2004ish or so. _________________

I bought FME for $8 a month or so ago, and played the single player up to maybe the end boss. It's sort of I guess maybe an OK game for what it is? The game kind of feels like the clipshow movie version of the real game. The single player is also kind of obviously training for MP, but MP is impossible to play because no one is ever on. What's worse is that if anyone is on it's level 70 Japanese players who are, because of how leveling works, basically impossible to kill when you're level 1. _________________

I...don't remember this event.
Just strange seeing this with the springtime and warming weather, I always get the Kawazu Kick for about a week in June-ish. But I'm not ready now!
I've still yet to finish Saga Frontier. It's something I like to inch through about once every year, complete a scenario. |

Damn it I wish I had been warned of this week so I could anticipate it. I'm playing a non-Square Enix game right now.
Feels good to know I was right about that teaser image being from Chrono Cross! _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

Games I may play:
Nier
Drakengard
Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song
Live A Live
Xenogears (maybe, just for the disc 1 towns/music)
Front Mission III
Einhänder
Chrono Cross
Probably in the listed order, too, meaning I'll most likely end up playing Chrono Cross after this event is over. It's just starting to warm up outside lately — one day the sun is shining and the next it's overcast again, but colors are gradually returning to trees and the chill of winter is a fading memory. Once summer fully arrives, I think that is when I will play Chrono Cross once again. _________________

I've been doing this with Gears since its PC release. I'm halfway through Act 5 by now!
The thing with Saga Frontier is that you get a lot of joy from successive repetition and a few of the scenarios are pretty bad, so I'd be inclined to barrel through the good half of the game quickly (which I've done a couple of times) rather than stretching it out like that.
Blue's is one of my favourites, simply because you get the jRPG arc of growing progressively more and more stupid-powerful in a grand total of about three hours, which is really what Saga Frontier is good at. Red and T260G both have nice, punchy, tight narratives with a lot of unique content you don't see in the others. Asellus' almost pulls this off, but it's a little flaky and unless you're used to building Mystics, you end up needing to grind too much. Emelia's and Riki's basically give you aspects from other characters' scenarios under less enjoyable circumstances. Lute's just lets you do whatever the hell you want, which isn't actually as much fun as playing through as Blue, Red, or T260G.
God love Chrono Cross. I really do think it's the best jRPG ever, just like Chrono Trigger is the best jRPG ever, but on a completely different axis. 32-bit vs. 16-bit era arguably has a lot to do with that. |

The turbo button and all gambits available from the start does do a lot, guys.
Wait, how does this thing work anyway? Do we just play squeenix games for a week then post about them or is there more to it then that? |

Coincidentally, I've been:
-replaying Chrono Cross (used to be my favourite game once upon a time)
-started a new game on FFIX because Chrono Cross' battle system is so boring
-playing DQIV on DS, to and from work
-watching my friend play Chrono Trigger for the first time, this one is probably more enjoyable than all of the above _________________ http://portuguesefoodbank.blogspot.ca/

it's also worth mentioning that this was by far the best running game in my experience with pcsx2 to date. perfect at max settings and with no discernible bugs in my (admittedly brief) time spent with it. |

I think I'm right near the end of Final Fantasy VI Advance, but I probably won't be finishing it this week.
I used a random name generator as an aid when naming the characters in this save file, and I'm pretty pleased with the results:

I want to play Front Mission 3 at some point
I too have an FFVI Advance save basically at the end of the game. I stopped playing because I was doing a really dumb super min/max playthrough and I made a couple wrong-esper-equipped-while-leveling mistakes. also it was time to uncurse the cursed shield and that's never any fun. |
