I think I'm right near the end of Final Fantasy VI Advance, but I probably won't be finishing it this week.

I used a random name generator as an aid when naming the characters in this save file, and I'm pretty pleased with the results:

HOW COME people seem to stick to playing new SE games no matter how bad they get worse than most other people stick to their bad games?

there are probably many different answers for this, but i'd like to hear some. it seems like people have never let go of their emotional investment they put into their first squaresoft rpgs and somehow feel this sense of obligation to keep playing them

(not a condescending question! i do this, too, only with other things)

Looking at the newer SE games on my shelf, I find I have three, which is more than I expected.

Dragon Quest IX was pretty solid. I liked that the overworld had a similar treatment structurally to that of the dungeons, and that the battles felt as tactical and involving as those in some of the (relatively) recent Shin Megami Tensei games. However, an option to turn off, or reduce, battle animations, and the ability to skip through repeated explanatory text would have been very nice – their absence is my only real gripe with the game.

Nier has moments that are quite poor when considered in isolation (e.g. fetch quests, uninteresting side scrolling segments). It also has some mediocre bits that are nevertheless notable because they are so unexpected and fresh. And its strong moments are numerous and impeccable (spoiler-free e.g. boss fights and crowd control). As a package comprised of disparate elements, the game is really remarkable (and strange).

Space Invaders Extreme 2 is a nice shooter. It reinvigorates the classic mechanics well – there's a lot of energy in this game, and it's paired with solid design. I'm not sure what else to say about it.

I also sometimes play ports/remakes/PSN rereleases of the older games.

I still think Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy Tactics are interesting and legitimately enjoyable.

About once or twice a year I get an itch to stare at pretty backgrounds while rows of heroes and monsters hit each other from opposite sides of the screen. Final Fantasy VI and VII hit the spot for a week or two until the itch subsides. If nostalgia plays into this, it'd be because of the Nobuo Uematsu music. Final Fantasy III DS works too, but I really do have fun with this one, and I don't know why. Perhaps because the pacing is quicker.

I still can't decide if I enjoy Dragon Quest V all that much beyond the fabulous soundtrack.

it's difficult to have played [Final Fantasy] 6, 7, or 9 without having a lot of affection for them, but if you didn't dig jRPGs in the 90s you're certainly not going to care now.

Not a Square Enix game. They published it outside of Japan, sure, but.

I didn't realise Taito published it themselves in Japan. Of course, neither of the two other games I listed were developed by Square Enix. I'd meant to mention that when I wrote that post, but forgot.
