For some reason capcom decided the game isn't easy enough and is patching in an easy mode: http://andriasang.com/con23u/dragons_dogma_patch/

A concession Japanse players I guess.

watch them make hard mode a $3.99 DLC

They're also putting out a new demo which lets you play the beginning of the game through the hydra battle. you can make your main & save your pawn, and your progress carries over to the real game. Sounds like a much better trial version.

Also: this game was almost Warzard/Red Earth the RPG and that makes me a little sad inside.

dark arisen thing will cost money
hard mode and speed run will be free

that's pretty cool but i don't know what they could do to the numbers side of things to make the game better? it all fits together pretty well even if it is just aught as fuck.

I don't really want to touch this game again. I'd love a brand new d dogma when there's time to develop it out properly - but I really can't play this game again.

Dang. I'm not interested in the fightman, but I sure would play the heck out of an RPG with characters looking like that.

The warrior class is so Guts. The actual berserk armor is really expensive, kind of hard to get, and not really that good though.

guys, after much postponing because backlog + Dark Souls i finally bought this game. Tell me how to design my pawn beside impossibly hot ideal girl/guy that everyone made. I'm trying stuff in the demo but somehow nothing works.

It's such a bummer to me that DD could've had that fun stylistic friction that the older "Japanese take on Western Fantasy" games tended to have and instead pretty much played it straight. In fact to me it feels duller than what it's mimicking. There's a sober plainness to the design that ceases to be palatably simplistic and rolls on into drudgery. I'd at least play a sequel for more than a few hours if the world weren't less interesting than, uhhhh, Oblivion.

Also wish the save system didn't let you start right back before you died

i was halfway tempted to make an pawn that's nearly identical to my main character for Brotherly Action

but then i made my main character a lady & made my pawn look like Karnov #looklikekarnov

That Warzard style picture is so much cooler looking than the actual game. Also a rare example of post 00's art by Ikeno that's actually awesome. Totally would've bought the game if it looked like this. :/

Sooo, this is mainly conjecture, but seeing the art I wonder if the game's, uh, vanillization had something to do with management directing the staff to appeal to the western market. Lionmen? That shit's too wack. If you look at the marketing images used for the game in the west, it's basically game-of-thrones-buzz-word live-action models painted over with photoshop gloss that bear no resemblance the game. (Maybe they used them in Japan too? I don't know how the game was promoted here.)

It'll be interesting to see what they do with the sequel, considering the game sold really well in Japan and not so much outside of it.

i am worried that neither of the articles i found about this on siliconera mention a US release, and that it's going to be sold as an "expanded version".

Hard mode and speedrun are out. they're not a patch though, you need to go and look for the free DLC(how ironic eh).
Nice hats there, new screenies.

What exactly does speedrun mode change anyway? Is it just a timer that runs with your game or did they even change something gameplay wise.

So anyone try the hard mode yet? Can you select it right from the start in a new game?

If you select hard in-game, it prompts about restarting the current play-through from the beginning, not sure why.

I beat the Ur Dragon, without any real preparation or even understanding the mechanics behind the fight. His hp was already 0 or near enough, I guess I got really lucky fighting him at the right time. I got a ton of neat stuff, but am a bit underwhelmed, I was kinda looking forward to it and this was a blind attempt.

So I'm giving this game another go. Played mostly the fighter classes last time, so going for Magic this time around. So far having a lot of fun sending my fighter pawn ahead and letting him cause havoc while I support from afar.

Even among the basic elemental skills, I'm really impressed with the variety among them. Frazil is great for disabling a crowd. It's pretty awesome to freeze a pack of goblins solid, then blast them with a fireball and have their flesh shatter.

The new modes look worth a shot too. Maybe it's a little cheap that you can start hardmode from whatever level your character is at (probably a limitation of the single-save slot), but it's also nice if you're higher level and just want the game to have a fresh challenge.

This page hair fairly comprehensive info on the two modes. Glancing at the speedrun tips, there are some neat tricks you can do to save time, like keeping a wakestone on you when you first go to the everfall, jumping off and using it to resurrect yourself when you die at the bottom. kinda neat.

I've been wanting to write something about Dragon's Dogma for a while. I have been playing it an embarrassing amount of time, had little work to do and I'm half sick but still, I'm pretty addicted. The notion that it's really good in what it does well and it's awful in what it does bad it's pretty spot on.

I think fighting is nice, crunchy, sometimes really good, sometimes slightly approximative, the "special moves" are generally ok, there are a few that are too DMC and make important DS stuff like position awareness a bit trivial sadly. I started playing thinking about going solo, but I desisted as soon as I realized that to heal I needed to pause the game and go the the inventory, I just can't do that anymore so I needed a healer. But my pawn did look more like an archer type, so I hired one. And then I hired another one too.

Let me get it out of my chest: capes. I got to admit, when in Dark Souls I got the Sliver Knight Armour from the chests in Anor Londo I was all happy and giggly, only to be horribly disappointed by the entire lack of animation of the cape. DD covers perfectly this silly need of mine, infact I don't even remember a game which such nice animations. It really feels good to see those capes flowing around, I don't know, it really pleases me more than it should I guess.

The writing is atrocious. One doesn't buy a Capcom game not expecting atrocious writing, but DD is DMC2 bad, often nonsensical, inappropriate, unfunny. I guess there is much more text than your usual Capcom game, so there is it.

As a lifelong SNK fan it feels beyond stereotypical to point out palette and head swaps in a 2012 Capcom game, but yeah. I think almost every enemy in the game has at least 1 swap, if not 3. boss monsters have often enough gameplay variations to make up for it, regular enemies less so, with the notable exception of level 3 wolf.

Exploration works really well, the night is great. It's a proper night. The only "problem" is getting too high in level, there is a point where not much is a threat anymore. I think it should cap at 50 maybe, but it goes to 200 yay. I'd suggest new players to not engage in any random quest unless they seems interesting(improbable).

Item crafting is badly implemented. There are way too many healing items, way too many useless items, and combining is generally pointless as you can buy the resulting items for reasonable prices.

DD is a bit like Oblivion/Bethesda game lite, buuut it plays pretty damn well and looks tight. It could use to be more like Dark Souls some/a lot of tweaking but it's worth a playthrough for sure. Maybe 2 if you have an alternate account. I'm curious about what they're gonna do for the DLC expansion, because hard mode is still piss easy if you are in ng+, and the game allows for 1 saveslot per account.

My brother got this for Christmas, and it's fun! He spent the majority of his first few hours wildly bashing his shield with his sword in the general direction of bats and wildlife, the over-emoting of which was hysterical. We loved it.

I'm goofing off with it. My question is this: I couldn't figure out what to do with the Strategies Scroll I found early on so I sold it, only to find out later it's for training your pawns. Is there a way to get it back for find another copy, or am I screwed for good?

Also, if I used the scrolls I had and I haven't hired a 3rd pawn yet, will the 3rd pawn not know the strategies when I hire him? Or will he automatically absorb the strategies I've already used?

Your pawn will learn while playing, either by seeing you or other pawns doing the right things, hired ones are pretty much the same in this matter, you might even hire pawns that are already more knowledgeable than yours. Scrolls aren't really a big deal but it's better to use 'em right away I suppose.
