I got into this beta because they were supposed to send beta keys out to people who owned the game (read: my brother), and their key distribution system was so bad that he had to send in a ticket to get one and ended up with two.

I didn't know screenshots were safe, or I would have chronicled the adventures of FFDog DeadDoctor.

I really appreciated that the crafting system was more involved than get-materials-and-craft-129-copper-bars. It's no Star Wars:Galaxies, but it gets a well-earned spirit award in the crafting arena.

I'm really looking forward to playing this again when open beta starts up and progress is For Keeps.

I felt like a lot of the mechanics in the original FF XIV (including the crafting system) were basically lifted from korean MMORPGs, and I never played WoW, so I"m wondering the specifics of this (well, other than the instanced dungeon mechanism).

Yeah, I'm still really curious about war-stories from 1.0.

There are some people walking around that still have their gear from 1.0, which will not be in this game. That's kind of neat that they let them keep it.

Also heard that 1.0 had weighty, intertial animations.

they haven't let us use our 1.0 characters yet afaik so that shouldn't be true. but it will be true that there will be armor like that (and GOOBUE MOUNTS!!), it just shouldn't be in the beta yet.

there will be servers for people to play on without legacy characters for people who can't handle the jelly

and yeah the 1.0 animations were stellar.

if you want some stories you can read the first couple pages of this thread!! or ask me

They're starting the last section of this beta phase like 7 hours from this post.

I believe the next beta phase will not erase your characters! Unless some sort of XP exploit is discovered.

Yep, Phase 4 ("open beta") will carry over into launch, so that's when I'll start playing again. The 1.0 characters are already loaded on the "legacy" servers, LRA, in fact you might want to look into any server transfers you might want while they're still open.

a lot of it has to do with the amount of streamlining that's going on. in this respect, there are a lot of similarities between ARR and the current iteration of WoW. the easiest demonstration of this is job traits; they're passive bonuses you get just for leveling. these are there seemingly in place of a talent tree, which some games still do but Blizzard has shied away from in recent times, instead opting for passive bonuses and a small amount of milestone talents every 15(?) levels in addition to picking a specialization (tanking, healing and damage). ARR's design has some of these ideas swimming around; 2nd jobs and subclassing will address the lack of actual talents.

most of it can be felt, however, in how there's no downtime. you're constantly out in the field or running to quest givers. you never have to train since you learn spells and passives on level up, HP, MP and TP are restored quickly and without action from the player, you can teleport to bound stones for gil and return every 6 minutes. it's mostly convenience, yeah, but they are systems that keep the player playing. dungeons are one-way paths with barely anything off the beaten path.

there's no doubt that the final product has it's own feel and, to a lesser extent, identity, as it's not stealing mechanics (too badly, anyway), but it is embracing the things that keep players happy and putting them on the foundation already laid out.

the passive bonuses for levels thing was in FFXI (which borrowed liberally from Everquest from my understanding so it's probably there too). in combination with subjobs it makes it so you don't do your subjob as well as your main job for balance reasons I imagine.

the armory system is fairly neat and I like it. in 1.0 it did have the caveat of cookie-cutter optimum builds. if you wanted to do your job well there were probably 2 or 3 skills from the other classes that you really wanted. or, in the case of Primal fights, EVERYONE in the party, regardless of job, wanted the lvl 22 Guardian skill, Sentinel. it just made you take less damage for 10 or 15 second I think. both the Ifrit and Garuda fights have a point where the entire party takes a large amount of damage. if everyone used sentinel, it was a lot easier to recover from the damage. Guardian was the most boring job to level though :(

i think you got max 6 skills from other classes but there were probably only 3 or 4 total that were useful to you so it was never a difficult decision

anyway maybe I'll play the beta some this weekend since i finally got a code :3

this is what I get for not being able to stomach XI

the quality of life stuff stands though. the final product is streamlined nearly to the breaking point.

So I got a beta code for PC but every time I try to redeem it I keep getting sent back to the log in page. I keep leaving the one time password thing blank because I don't have one and from what I understand I can only get one by using a smartphone only when I have bought FFXI or FFXIV. Any one else get past this hurdle?

I seemed to have gotten past it and I am now properly registered. Now I'm trying to find the game client but the beta forums seem to be down as I just get a message in japanese and refuses to go to any other page using the quick navigate pull down menu.

The phase 3 beta just ended i think. Phase 4 will have a new client, so they may have taken the old one down.

The one-time password isn't required. This took me a while to figure out: it is apparently for when you're logging in from an unusual location (like a net cafe) and you don't want SE to assume someone is trying to lock you out of your account.

It's like the WoW Authenticator, if you ever used that. A small device/app which generates a one-time-use code so that it's significantly harder to get into your account using just a keylogger or something like that.

I just want to take a moment to thank New Designer Guy and Squenix for putting in small, queue-able instances that teach people how to MMO in groups, as I'm quickly rediscovering that people in other games lack common sense, awareness and a general sense of not doing their roles

I don't CC shit for fun, assholes

I've had trouble explaining the concept of CCing to some groups in the beta. But they usually get the idea after a wipe or two.

Pretty excited for open beta/launch! I haven't burnt out on an MMO in a while, so this should be fun!

crowd control, like mezes or sleeps or polymorphs

something that's fallen out of favor because Blizzard has pushed dungeon design to be "grab mobs, aoe threat, aoe damage, hint loot pinata, collect loot"

First status effect you get to use as a lancer is Slow, what was surprising. Normally it's some sort of wide-range attack that's useless/dangerous when in a party.

I like that lots of abilities come with other statuses/debuffs on the side.

One particular marauder skill will put stun on an enemy. Stun only lasts a few seconds, though, so at first I thought: this is useless? Then I realized I can hit that skill when most enemies/bosses are about to use their AOE and cancel their cast. The skill has a separate cool-down so I can save it for when I need it.

One of the first skills you get as a conjurer, stone, puts heavy on enemies, which makes them move more slowly. Very useful for a class that needs to operate at a range.

It's neat.

So like, the game launches on the 27th next month, so like 28 days from now.
And there will be a headstart period for those who pre-ordered. At least 3 days, assuming Squenix doesn't want to get laughed into obscurity again.

They're also gonna hold another beta phase, presumably also for at least a few days. And then they're gonna want time to parse the debug data and such from that beta, which I can't imagine taking less than a week.

That's an awful lot happening in the next month's time frame, and yet we STILL don't know when the next beta phase is.

They've been handling things competently so far. Everything's gone smooth and mostly been on schedule. That sure is a tight window, though.

Still, this project is the most competent square has been about anything in recent memory. kind of a bummer that most people will pass it over due to it being a subscription MMO. i have been so impressed with it (but I've also not played games like this before).

You can now benchmark your shit

It's a pretty benchmark! A little obnoxious with like 6 loading screens but fun nonetheless. Also I love a lot of the music in this game.

Apparently they will announce the start of Beta phase 4 on August 8th. Rumors are that phase 4 could start around August 9th at the earliest. After all, phase 4 isn't supposed to go longer than a week with the early access being just a few days afterwards.

I will probably play on the server Ulthros. It was one of the most populated (I can't remember if it was the most populated or the second most populated) server during the last beta phase. I enjoyed my short time with Beta 3 there.

Yeah, they announced all the dates which is pretty exciting! It's worth noting that beta 4 actually begins on the 16th if you participated in phase 3.
The level cap is 20, though.

Also, the head start begins on the 24th!

Servers open at 9:00 AM GMT Friday morning for previous beta participants!

Let's prepare:

If I wasn't such a vain MMOer I'd dress in all bright tacky colors and claim the name Clown Strife just to get a rise out of people.

I guess I'm descending back into the abyss come Friday night.

I might follow the official naming scheme for Lalafell this time. Get in character. Still rolling on Ultros, though.

the neatness of getting a PS3 code and being able to play on it has been diminished by the fact that my PS3 and PC are now in the same room

or maybe I'll multibox or something stupid

I could play this on Bootcamp, but I like keeping my game-time contained with in my PS3. I have enough distractions on my computer already.

Anyway, I'll roll on Ultros again. Need a better name, though. This one's for keeps, right?

Barring some sort of gamebreaking exploit being discovered during the beta weekend, these characters will be for keeps.

With the final beta phase starting this weekend it would be great if we actually could get as many SB people as possible on one server. Like BotageL I will roll on Ultros. It was one of the most popular servers during phase 3 and mostly really pleasant. It would be super nice to see SB people around there.

I had to check to make sure it wasn't a legacy server first. That's where I'll roll my character!

I wanted to roll on a high-pop server but not Gilgamesh, because I believe that's where Kripparian is going to play and as much as he seems like a reasonable enough dude, his legion of fanboys would be beyond obnoxious and I don't want a minute-to-minute on what this one guy is up to.
