A fine list.
A little rpg heavy.
I would have knocked off Secret of Mana for Umihara Kawase.
Umihara Kawase is fantastic and while there is a playstation sequel, the sequel has watered down physics. _________________

Secret of Mana is only there by virtue of the number of votes it got. Tim lashing out at the audience for voting for it over Secret of Evermore is probably the highlight of the show. _________________

Cuba: Lufia 2 is a sweet game just for the "random" dungeon alone. It was so good people hacked it into Final Fantasy 5.
Everyone: That's a pretty good list, but in my own little personal list I would boot out Secret of Mana and put something else on there. SoM is boring now. It was the perfect game for 12 year old me who had nothing better to do but press A.
Game that comes to mind to swap out SoM for is Pilotwings! This was Nintendo's game to showcase why Mode 7 was a cool thing and why a SNES was better than the NES. It also was my first taste of the "coddling Nintendo tutorial" only here it didn't feel overbearing since they were actual instructors. Man, nothing makes me feel like I let down my instructors more than that Pilotwings "fail" music. I still play this from time to time to just jet around, the other games just don't give me the same joy of flying around.
Also just for personal taste, I would've snuck Super Punch-Out up there somehow. Not as tough or iconic as the original,6 but man this is the up-port I've always liked. I have always had a soft spot for the Punch-Out series. Big colorful sprites, and all sorts of power punches, it's easiest of the Punch-Outs so it's something everyone can enjoy.
EDITED: I glossed over Kirby Dream Course being on the list!
On the whole, I like the Genesis list a lot more! It's more meaty, there's a greater spectrum of genres covered on that one. Good show on Falcon's Revenge, that's a criminally overlooked title.

Lufia II has good puzzles. The games you mentioned don't. That's why you should bother.

I never saw what was so good about the Ancient Cave. The only instance of the Ancient Cave I actually like is in the DS remake.
Still, I think the game is overrated. The first game is more deserving of praise. _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

Oh god, I just realized F-Zero isn't on there.
Replace SoM with Legend of the Mystical Ninja. Also needs Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. Maybe ActRaiser?
Cubavote goes to Dragon View, but everyone knew that already.

I wanted to get into Dragon Quest ever since I played a couple dozen hours of VIII and was totally charmed by it back in high school, but when I got V for the DS and tried to play it I just couldn't endure past the first dozen hours or so.
I have a suspicion that in order to love Dragon Quest you need to have played a Dragon Quest game before the age of 10, otherwise it is lost to you forever. _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |

Hey Brandon (who doesn't read this?) You know what's a better SNESclusive beat-em-up than Final Fight 3? Ninja Warriors Again.
Metroid 3 should be higher, and Tetris Attack/Panepon and Ninja Warriors Again should be on there. |

I'm not sure you have to go that far, but DQVIII's graphical charm does a lot to distract you from the Dragon Quest-ness of it. I still like DQ1 and 2 for their simplicity which is maybe where DQ survives best. When it steps beyond that simplicity the parts that remain simple can't handle the burden.
Someone write an essay comparing the "statue" in Dragon Quest V and the raft scene in Illusion of Gaia. _________________ My Hawt Blog Vita Games

I think DQ VIII made a lot of subtle alterations to modernize the game progression and battle system while still retaining the feel of simplicity that the older games are seeking to evoke (but do so by simply clinging to the corpse of a long outdated design template).
I'm actually kind of curious about the 3DS remake of VII because from what I've read about it it seems to address the exact aspects of the series that have deterred me from it for a while now.
Of course part of my incompatibility with the series might have something to do with the fact that I prefer my animu fantasy games to exhibit the dark, moody melodramatics of Final Fantasy over the bright colors and classical aesthetic of Dragon Quest, and no amount of formula tweaking or gameplay overhauls is going to fix that. _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |

secret of mana deserves to be on this list over a lot of other games because although as a single-player arpg it's merely so-so, as a cooperative adventure it was nigh peerless at the time. and the music is outstanding.

I agree that Zombies ate my Neighbors should be on there, it's a magical game, but fuck if I don't hit the reset button when I die and lose all my power-ups, this is my western gradius. I would pick Goof Troop to be a better co-op adventure than either SoM or ZamN.
I would also find a way to put Spanky's Quest up there because that's game is the Bubble Bobble platformer I always wanted as a kid. And I claim Bubble Bobble as my GOAT.
There's a ton of good games that weren't made by Nintendo or have Super in the title that nobody plays or ever talks about. I'm not sure what the criteria was for selecting them (people's choice or critically brilliant?) aside from exclusively SNES, but from watching the podcast the panel's expertise was totally not anything as encompassing as the other 16-bit boxes. The BGGOAT is probably my favorite podcast of the bunch. I've never liked "people's choice" because usually it serves to show that people don't know anything as a group. _________________

I've avoided it for a while, and for the same mindset you had. Just looked like I missed out on it at the time, and its hard to "dive in" and get it.
That's why I really enjoyed DQIX for the same reasons you enjoyed VIII. Charming graphics, same simple gameplay, and everything feels streamlined. I think its a great "gateway" into DQ, and then if you are feel daring you dive into the older entries and prepare "true" Dragon Quest experience.
Yeah, after hearing all the talk on the podcast, and Tim's constant praise, I feel like I need to give DQV now. DS one for sure. _________________ http://www.iamthefourth.com/ |

I wanted to get DQ IX but never really pushed myself to do it, and since such a big component of the game was the StreetPass functionality I kinda feel like it's over now, so to speak - like getting an MMO after the servers are offline.
Again, that's why I have my eye on the 3DS remake of VII - it looks to marry the amenities of modern DQ with the basic structure of the old ones.
Also good luck tracking down a copy of DQ V DS for a reasonable price. It was already hard to find when I got my copy and that was years ago. For some godforsaken reason the DS remakes of IV and VI got generous print runs in the USA, but V did not. _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |

I played through DQ9 without any streetpass stuff and didn't feel like i missed much.
DQ5 eventually got a reprint from Nintendo. It's currently going for 35 on Amazon. A bit more than 4 or 6, but worth it. |

Yeah, I would say you are not missing much with no StreetPass on DQIX. Plays just plain and fine without it. Now, I'd imagine the game was INSANE with StreetPass, and I can see why it sold billions of copies in Japan. But they also designed it great for solo play and making characters and just doing your own thing. Good "hangout" game, as I stated before. And I kind of wish they would just do an "3DS" port of it, and streamline it all with the new Pokemon network settings. And I am totally hoping that would bring over that DQVII over stateside. _________________ http://www.iamthefourth.com/ |

Yeah if they did this I would seriously consider buying it, especially since 3DS StreetPass/SpotPass is vastly superior to the DS equivalents.
A 3DS port of VIII would be nice too. I mean if they're bothering to port it to iOS, why the hell not. Plus that would finally make every numbered DQ game available on Nintendo systems, which given Nintendo's emphatic support for the franchise in recent years I'm sure they would appreciate. (On a quasi-related note, I'd really like to see a 3DS port of SMT: Nocturne, too.)
Googling for potential info on a DQ7 3D US release turned up this informative article on the franchise's localization history. _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |

not PSone.
I sort of like GBA as it is very glitchy in positive and negative ways. It's unstable and unpredicatable. Sometimes you'll get 4 turns in a row! Sometimes your opponenet will just forget to go. Sometimes they'll get 4 turns in a row and murder you. _________________ My Hawt Blog Vita Games

The DS and PSP versions of FF4 are the most technically robust by a long shot, and I think general consensus is that one of those two is the best way to go, though each has its pros and cons. Personally I would go with the PSP version mainly because the DS version's graphics and soundtrack arrangements are hideously ugly, even if the actual gameplay is (allegedly) a bit better balanced. _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |
