Well, assuming the pictures are to be believed, it looks like they've already got root access to the hardware, though the firmware could prove troublesome since it's likely something similar to the 3DS.

It's worth noting that the Nintendo social network is actually a web API that is provided and maintained by a third party. It's not part of the firmware, so there was no "root access". In addition, it is very likely what they saw was some version of the moderator interface.

Pretty sure the WiiU CPU carries a PS3-style internal encription scheme, so save state exploits and regular Wii tomfoolery (outside the Wii sandbox) will be pretty hard.

I just made a post along these lines in the Metroid Prime anniversary thread. It really is a shame. For a system that is supposedly designed around motion and physical human bodies, it's incredible how uncomfortable and lazy every single controller for the Wii is.

The Classic Controller Pro for the Wii is awesome!

I don't have a problem with the Wiimote so I don't get that complaint. I never removed the jacket, though.

Ah, thanks for the correction. Didn't really pay much attention, just heard lots of people shouting, posted what others had said.

If you're talking about Anand's chart you're reading it backwards, it lists the total Sunspider JS rendering time so lower is better. It's also mainly a test of browser javascript performance, on my system IE10 runs it almost twice as fast as Firefox (16) with Chrome somewhere in between. It's probably safe to assume the WiiU's browser isn't as well optimized as Android Chrome or iOS Safari.

(I kind of want to run the benchmark on the 360 now to see how IE its browser is)

Again, thanks for letting me know.

To be honest I haven't spent much time with it. I just think it is disappointing that they didn't continue in the escalation of the ergonomic blob factor a la N64->Gamecube, and instead sort of tried to recapture the style used for the SNES. I guess the classic pro controller is just an Xbox controller?

Mine is actually rather quiet. I really don't get these complaints in the slightest unless other people are having actual hardware issues. For reference, I have the deluxe system, and I set it up horizontally (not using the vertical stand). It's in a fairly well ventilated TV stand/entertainment center.

The system fan is pretty quiet. Barely louder than the Xbox 360 slim I have sitting right next to it. For comparison, it's nowhere NEAR as loud as an original 360 or the average fan on a modern gaming PC graphics card.

When it does read a disc, it's a fairly quiet disc spinning noise. Completely reasonable though - much quieter than, say, a Dreamcast GD-ROM drive. Yes, there's a noise because moving parts, but it's certainly not disruptive. Maybe there are some games that read the disc more than others, but I haven't noticed anything at all unusual in the frequency of disc access noise in games I've played (mostly Mario and Ninja Gaiden so far). To me it's better than the original Wii too, since my Wii has (always had) a sorta loud clicky noise when reading a disc. WiiU doesn't have that.

In all fairness, the CC Pro was a step up, since the original Classic was a SNES pad with two extra half-shoulders and analog sticks lazily stitched onto its frame. The U GamePad is fairly comfy from my limited time with it as well.

Still, I miss those clicky analog shoulders.

You missed a decent axe discussion about the website when it was started about a month ago, where I proposed that a crucial innovation of vox media websites is how they allow the writing staff to wield such a strong and modular visual vocabulary while keeping very good accessibility and having a mobile-friendly reactive design (and where it was explained that this site was paid for by microsoft and geico and is likely to be utterly unprofitable)

boy, I can't believe the last two Nintendo consoles I've bought were a NDS and a N64. Now that Nintendo has fully embraced the aesthetic standardization of videogames and computing I'm even less excited about the we you

It looks more like a PlayStation 2 controller, actually, but with a proper D-pad and bigger trigger buttons.

I think he meant the Wii U Classic Controller. Which does indeed look like it was modeled after the 360's.

I was looking at the Wii Classic Pro, but now looking at both that and the Wii U one I realize that each has subtle differences from both the PS3 and Xbox 360 controllers. Still, the basic shape is the same, as are the numbers of buttons. The only difference is their location. I guess that's because most games are ports these days. It's almost as though they're willing to admit that the whole touchscreen controller thing is just a weird, unnecessary peripheral that is for some reason packed in with the console. Seems like the 3DS and its 3D features are working out in much the same way. It is weird that the Wii U controller and the Wii Pro controller are essentially the same thing, with the joysticks in totally different places. I feel like that would make for a very strange adjustment. Video games are weird.

On Friday night, I brought a copy of Tank! Tank! Tank! into Gamestop, put it on the counter, and announced that I had finished it and wanted to trade it in for something else. The look on the clerk's face was pretty good.

(I was also pretty drunk)

Had a chance to very briefly try one of these at a Target demo kiosk today. The controller was a whole lot lighter than I had feared it would be.

I... I kinda wanna hold it again.

Congrats to sarsamis, your Miiverse drawing of Mario in repose has been shared on Kotaku. You're a tiny bit more famous now.

Also, how the hell did you get that picture past the Nintendo police state

Christ downloads are slow on this thing. Not as bad as the Wii, but still a fraction of any PC or laptop I have on the same router.

I'll have Sanic Kart in an hour or so, I guess (started the download a while ago).
