The Torment sequel is happening, here are the details.
| Brian Fargo wrote: |
| A Torment game requires big ideas and a truly exotic setting in order to explore the underlying thematic elements. Colin described it best when he said “Torment’s themes are essentially metaphysical, getting to the heart of what it means to be alive and conscious, and it’s easier to ask those questions in a setting that is far removed from the familiar.” Numenera is such a setting, and it has tremendous potential to cultivate those ideas. We won’t have faeries or devils, but we’ll have diabolical creatures from far dimensions with schemes beyond human imagination. We won’t have gods, but we’ll have creatures who have lived for millennia with the powers of creation and destruction at their fingertips, with abilities honed over countless lifetimes. We won’t have other planes per se, but we’ll have pathways to hostile worlds and bizarre landscapes and ancient machines that catapult the players into places where the ordinary laws of nature no longer apply. In terms of role-playing mechanics, we won’t be attempting to literally translate the Numenera tabletop system into electronic form. However, its gameplay mechanics are very solid and include several components that will lend themselves to great (and innovative) cRPG gameplay. It’s great to have the Numenera rules as a starting point and to be working with Monte to adapt them for a cRPG. |

Yeah I GOGed Torment and kind of stopped playing 1/3 of the way through because combat. I keep thinking about picking it back up and then I just don't. Also, and it kills me to say this, too much reading. Though I suppose it is the game with the most reading that is the most tolerable to read. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

yeah, there's TONS of hate among pinball enthusiasts over the whole "home model" thing that Stern is doing now. I honestly don't know who their market is with these; at $3k, people with too much money to spend are going to either shell out the additional $2k for a "real" Stern (or the vastly superior Jersey Jack WOZ), or they're going to get a used machine in beautiful condition for less than $3k (with less than a dozen exceptions like Medieval Madness and TAF).
Those chintzy backboxes with the alphanumeric displays on the neck look terrible, don't they?? I mean, I guess it's a little bit evocative of a Centaur II machine, but it's really a lot more evocative of something you'd get at Toys R Us for $30. _________________

Here's a trailer that will tell you absolutely nothing about Cyberpunk 2077.
You're better off reading the description if you want any idea what this game might even start to resemble.
| Quote: |
Welcome to the year 2077. More info: http://www.cyberpunk.net/
The teaser shows how the Psycho Squad might acquire a new member.
The Psycho Squad specializes in combating "psychos" -- individuals who overuse implants and substances that boost or otherwise alter the human body.
There comes a point when they overdose on these innovations, and their bodies start to rebel against their biological body parts as well as all things organic around them. Simply put, they start killing people, who they now derisively call "meatbags."
When a psycho goes on the rampage, strange things can happen. There's carnage, and the psycho might be taken down by regular police, but they're not always able to get the job done.
When things spin out of control, they call in MAX-TAC (Maximum Force Tactical Division), popularly called the Psycho Squad. |

Given the description, it makes sense. You're presumably an operative specifically called in to take down rampaging murderous cyborgs. Probably not a lot of means for peaceful resolution at that point.
The big issue is just what the kind of game it will be.
Taking a tactical approach and having you coordinate a squad of relatively ordinary folks against a singular, much more powerful target than yourselves is probably too much to hope for.
This also made me think Rainbow Six + Shadow of the Colossus. And then realize that concept could be the basis of the best Battletech video game no one will ever make, putting the player in an anti-mech infantry platoon. |

The Mechwarrior 2d ed. manual had a story about just such a platoon as its opening prelude, and I still remember how completely awesome it was. They killed one mech by luring it into an industrial bakery and tricking it into falling into a massive vat of fat, and then setting it on fire. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

Oh I'm sure the actual game could end up being anything. But that trailer. they talk about this uncontrollable threat of psychoborgs that can only be stopped by a special team (who must be notable for some reason) and they just run up and: look at this bullet, look at this blood, look at you shooting, look at that psygirl with bloody kamas.
and people all over the internet say "amazing". |

Yeah, I love that story. Generally I don't care about the BT fluff as far as novels about the major stuff are concerned, I get all I want or need from the sourcebooks, but the short stories can be a lot of fun. |

The trailer is somewhat succesful in capturing the tone of the R. Talsorian roleplaying game Cyberpunk, which is good as this seems to be an official license (the original version of the RPG was called Cyberpunk 2013, which might explain why they were keen to get a trailer out at the beginning of the year).
Tulpa, what do you find misogynistic about that trailer?
Toptube, i disagree with your reading - the trailer makes it clear that the bullets have little effect, which could (but probably won't) make an interesting game.
Personally i dislike this kind of trailer (lack of gameplay, use of music), so it guess it's the idea of an official Cyberpunk game made by a team who might have a clue which has me slightly hopeful about this.
EDIT: also it should probably be said that the situation described in the trailer & the accompanying text are taken directly from the RPG. Characters had an Empathy statistic which would be reduced by the addition of cyberware, and dropping below zero meant the character suffered "cyber-psychosis". This generally meant going insane and attacking everyone (I believe the rules suggested that characters reverted to the control of the Game Master at this point). The amount of Empathy lost was random to some degree, so past a certain level of augmentation you weren't sure that adding new cyberware would be safe. |

hang on, let me put on my Tim-Rogers-brand hyperbole hat for a moment...
This game is Orbient meets Jetpack Joyride meets Klonoa.
This game is the most adorable one-tap action game you will every play.
This game turns housewives hardcore.
This is not the Citizen Kane of video games. It is the My Neighbor Totoro of video games.
This game is God Hand sneaking into a Kindergarten disguised as Cut the Rope. _________________

It should be pretty obvious I mean this trailer is as unsubtly woman hating as that Hitman trailer last year
scantily clad woman wearing a corset in a very passive pin up poster pose, obvious objectification which might not necessarily be a problem. Surrounded by blood and death, and she must be destroyed. The weird linking of sex and death, particular the male view of women's sexuality and death is disturbing to me but par for the course for CDProjekt.
Without the accompanying text the trailer is literally slow motion titillating display of a woman getting shot.
There's not really any context to draw anything else from the trailer even with accompanying text. Like what is the context? Why is someone that is literally covered in death dealing cybernetic implants wearing red platform heels and underwear and nothing else? It's supposed to be sexy to the default male viewer is the only explanation I can conjure. There's not an in fiction explanation that makes very much sense. _________________
