Home Alone (R-18G)
edit: here's an LP of the second game, it's, um, popular |
Man, I had a passing interest in the series because the heroines were always appealing, but after getting Trapt when it first came out, I find it hard to remain interested.
The games are all so ploddingly slow and clunky, and the payoff is rarely worth the time it takes to set everything up. It's a series that would benefit from ragdoll physics instead of the canned animations because it just feels so weak otherwise. Also if the game was sped up 5x faster and if it was a on touch screen so you could just set traps by touching instead of menus.
The new game's heroine's design is pretty great though. Unfortunately, the game still looks every bit as clunky as the last one. _________________

Sony announced a day one firmware patch for PS4

day one console patches: the new normal |
this is either a way to ensure they get data from the install base or a way for them to accelerate the manufacturing process before the software was done
either way it's nbd and I am sure they will perpetrate way worse stuff upon consumers in the following years |
we know that it's almost entirely the fault of getting to manufacturing as soon as possible (they've been saying that they've been pumping systems out since at least around E3, especially since they have a 5 million sold estimate for FY14), so the idea of there being an update in of itself isn't surprising (aside from some missing features shown at the reveal, like low-power suspend and upload to YouTube)
what's surprising is the reaction some people are having to it, which I, as a cynical consumer, am greatly enjoying _________________

AFAIK, both the PS4 and One had been cleared with the FCC in late June or early July (more interestingly, before either of upclocks the One received to its CPU and GPU), so it may just be a problem of implementation.
I'm surprised they haven't said anything about including the firmware on any of the launch titles' discs, although they still have a plug-and-play product (the One is requiring an internet connection as part of its setup). I'm holding out hope that they'll release the update pre-download like they do for the PS3 and Vita. _________________

I think you think I care about this more than I actually do
this seems pretty i line with the exiting generation, where the 360, dashboard revisions aside, was much more well-rounded and usable system than the PS3 w/r/t interface (my favorite thing is how the 360 will auto-detect what kind of AV cable is plugged into it and I don't have to set that all up every time I plug into a new display)
besides, the real meat of "lolconsolewarz" will be if these resolution rumors are true
(everyone brings up giant enemy crabs, but no one remembers Ridge Racer :( ) _________________

yeah, I don't think anyone's under the illusion that the games are actually any good, just kinda quirky and ridiculous. _________________ twit |

I didn't notice it anywhere else on the forum so:
SONY (and possibly MS) are about to get some backlash, I imagine.
this FAQ outlines what you can and cannot do, with a PS4.
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/10/30/ps4-the-ultimate-faq-north-america/#sect1
and the topic of this post is:
PS4 has no DLNA support (multimedia streaming over a network), does not play MP3s or Audio CDs (the only music you can play must be purchased/subscribed to from Sony's Music Unliminted service).
That's right: no CD support, No CD ripping, no local MP3 support and no MP3 via DLNA means you are effectively blocked from using any of your existing music collection on PS4 for general listening or for custom game soundtracks. You will have to buy or stream music via Sony's Music Unlimited service.
unofficial confirmation that Xbone also does not allow MP3 playback. No word yet on DLNA. But the 360 I believe only supported media streaming through Windows Media Player/Center, rather than true DLNA support. So MAYBE that will make it in the Xbone?
This, combined with no analog audio, really bums me out. |

Holy fuckin shit. I was thinking of getting a PS4 just to replace my 3 as my television streaming/living room box but fuck that now. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

You also can't take recorded videos off the hard drive. You can only upload them to Facebook. HDCP during games will be disabled via a post-launch patch so capture devices are a no-go until then. There's a lot of other dumb stuff in there too. At least arcades sticks are confirmed to work. It's better than nothing I guess.
The question on whether you can purchase stuff from other regions wasn't actually answered by the answer either so I don't know whether the question was side-stepped or the editor skimmed over that.

wait what
the fact that I can do that on a linux box without even having to agree to use non-open-source drivers as used to be the case means the licensing fees should actually be nonexistent
unless they're getting dinged on commercial use clauses and trying to save $2/unit? but even so
I mean, I have a linux box in my living room so I'd never feel the need for this, and I don't really use physical media anymore, any more than the next guy, but still

I recommend the SONY BDP-S390 Blu-ray player. It's a 2012 model. I have one. While it doesn't play EVERYTHING, It has a better than average file support via Fat32 or NTFS formatted thumb drive. As well as DLNA. It's pretty dang quiet, uses much less power. My only real complaint with mine is that about once a month, it will just wig out and reset itself, while kicking through menus.
If you get one, make sure to update the firmware. It makes it load Blu-ray discs more quickly and fixes RGB output. It wasn't any slower than a PS3, but now it should load a bit faster.

Well yeah but the PS3 also plays like PS3 games. So I think I'll just stick with that.

My 60GB still plays DVDs and PS2 games, but not PS3 games/Blu-rays : \
that's why I bought the blu-ray player. |

Wow this game went from uninteresting to gross pretty damn quick. A shame because the graphics are sort of nice and I might have played it just to gawk at some visuals when this hit the bargain bin. |

I might be ruined by vidcons in general but I didn't find it any grosser than Saints Row IV(I haven't played it yet, just seen various material about it). I'm willing to give it a fair shake once I hear how the combat plays out. The only thing I'm not really sold on is having zombies as the defacto baddies unless their going to be the fierce and active kind. _________________
