Crossing the streams, the Wrestling Observer had this recently
Wrestling Observer wrote:
--In the THQ bankruptcy filings, WWE is owed $45 million. No wonder they are watching these proceedings closely. I had heard Vince McMahon was furious and I guess that tells you why.
How in the blue did THQ end up owing that much to Vince. Yeesh, no wonder he's so cranky (Other than spunking millions on two disastrous election campaigns for his wife) _________________
There's rumblings that Warner Bros. is going to going after THQ's stuff aggressively and that they've sent scouts to the studios, so a good chunk of the bigger franchises might end up at the same publisher.
Personally, I want Sega to buy Relic and throw them in with the Creative Assembly. Then they'll have all of the strategies.
Apparently EA also sent scouts and Ubi-Soft was mentioned in the court reports as well.
So far, Clearlake has a bid in that would take over the whole company. But if the four asset bidders (EA, Ubi and Warner Bros were mentioned so far. The other remains unknown but is allegedly either Square-Enix, Disney or Capcom) can push their capital over Clearlake's bid then the assets would go up for sale. So far it seems like they will push over Clearlake's bid and Clearlake would have to join the bidding themselves.
Will be an interesting fight to see. Though I think Warner would be more aggressive taking IP's like Saints Row while EA is probably hunting for the WWE licence. _________________
- Volition and related franchises (Freespace, Descent, Summoner, Red Faction, Saints Row) and the publishing rights to Metro: Last Light goes to Deep Silver/Koch Media
- THQ Montreal (1666) and publishing rights to South Park: Stick Of Destiny go to Ubi-Soft
- Relic go to Sega (already dealing with Games Workshop who took the licence back so Sega getting 40K is somewhat inevitable. Sega also narrowly beat Zenimax for them)
- The Homefront IP goes to Crytek (lol)
- 2K Games are taking the Darksiders IP along with Vigil's assets and resources (but Vigil will be shutting down) alongside Turtle Rock's project "Evolve". 2K also signed a deal for the WWE licence last week which has emerged today.
Surprised they didn't just get straight raided by EA and Activision, to be honest. _________________
The THQ plot thickens. Inaba has been posting on twitter wondering why they didn't pick up Darksiders and Vigil games for cheap. Platinum Games translator starts contacting ex-Vigil employees on twitter to see what can be done and it looks like a rescue may be attempted.
Yeah, seems like they were just making sure that garbage pays off at least.
Also good lord I am ridiculously hype about 2K getting WWE. That's the best possible result since EA probably would have just shoved Syn Sophia on it and then added the usual EA garbage. My brother plays the NBA games they put out and there is obscene levels of quality going on in those on top of that as they take elements of whats going on in NBA in real time and get them in the game ASAP and for free. Team has a special court design for a match? It's in within days. With a constantly evolving thing like WWE and the whole constant motion of the WWE universe (lol Marketing). 2K can really thrive on that if they pull it off along with the gameplay.
yeah. I hadn't even given this any thought (nor have i played a WWE game in, oh, a decade), but there's definitely a real possibility for Good Times in this one.
Yeah, actually excited about this. Hopefully some shakeups in it, as the changes in the series this generation have been incremental at best. Been messing around in WWE13 lately, and it has some really neat stuff, but then some not so neat stuff as well.
At least maybe they can develop a side series as well that actually sticks around. All Stars had potential, but yeah, they didn't stick with it.
As for the Deep Silver thing, if all the Dead Island bad taste were to be developer-side, let's say, that would actually bode well for Saint's Row, in that DS would be pretty hands off and let VOlition do what they want with it. I want to believe, dammit.
Volition were very self aware of the plaudits and feedback they were getting from the LGBT community for SR2 and built that feedback into SR3 so I'd imagine they are very much aware and intelligent about things like that without needing to be prodded by a publisher. So we likely won't get the some dumb things and dumb decisions Techland like to put in their games.
Also the THQ saga doesn't seem to be over yet. Still the fates of some IP's to be decided by the end of the month. Anyone got a spare ten bucks for Dark Summit? _________________
I wonder if the Memory Card Transfer Functionality from the Arcade version is in there as well. Would make unlocking everything a damn sight easier than beating Story and GP on Very Hard. _________________
I think it works if the expectations are adjusted toward a different target audience than, say, us.
This is pretty much the big point, for me. "Meh, who needed this anyway?" may be something that we on SB can say, yes. Discussions of the sort that Sarkeesian wants to popularize are pretty much already happening here. But this series isn't for SB. To judge it as though it is, is to talk smugly to a wall, basically.
it's somewhat wrong to say you can judge it as is. There's a lot of problems with it regarding talking to the audience as it feels a bit too smug and she commits the worst crime of critical theory by talking in absolutes and making definitive statements on elements she is only introducing.
It needs to be on a base level, but at the same time, audiences aren't stupid and will tune out if they feel they are being talked down to. She can afford to start bringing in elements of discussion. But as is, it's a list video that has good production and no substance. And it's a worrying start. _________________
At least it eventually brought us a drunk and confessional David Jaffe at the Playboy Mansion.
I think it was the point where David Jaffe just suddenly said "Fuck it" in general and decided to call everyone on the industry on their shit.
I remember reading an Edge Making of article on the first and he seemed to be complaining constantly about design decisions he could of made and how Kratos looked too heroic rather than a complete scumbag. So at least he's self-aware about it. _________________

I don't know. From what NeoGAF seems to have pulled with their detective work lately. It seems a lot more passive and more focused on things like voice, head tracking and being a core part of Illumiroom rather than gaming despite the power boost. Especially as MS recent hirings for people like Black Tusk and Rare have only had one or two kinect engineer things (The Rare hiring which nerds flung shit over was eventually deduced down to them looking for someone to work on head tracking for PGR 5 and not a Kinect only project)
Seems a bit early to hiss at it like it's holy water to the core vampires. Espeically since MS supposedly have 4 new AAA Core IP's on the go for it and are really focusing on that aspect rather than "Here's a bunch of sequels".
We will be living in interesting times till E3 I suspect. _________________
“DuckTales Remastered” has seen the development team take the levels and layout from the original 1989 release as a foundation before expanding upon them to significantly enhance the gameplay experience
I don't hate Wayforward as much as y'all but this quote is like uhhhh
Basically I am excited to hear virt's remixes of the dope music i guess
according to Fort90, they are also getting animators or art directors or whatever from the original show to work on it, and also the original voice of Scrooge McDuck.
that is neat.
but like so many WF things, they generally seem to have their hearts in the right places, but....
yeah. they definitely should fuck with the level structure. that's what the game needed.
They explained it on stream that they would add a bit like a larger cart section if it was too short in the original and tweaking the designs. Seems like they are taking the Bionic Commando Re-Armed route of not fucking with it if it's not broke and tweaking it if it is.
But then they mentioned you get a money bin you can swim in. They knows what the people wants.
Edit: Seems they are remixing the bosses as well so they have added attack patterns and new tiers. _________________
Split/Second is a game that really works once you are actually playing it and the UI doesn't get in the way as much as you think it would. It has problems like the AI being rubberbanding jerks and some of the collision detection being a little janky on if it triggers a crash cutscene.
Anyway, looks like Telltale are teasing Poker Night 2
Sam from Sam & Max seems to be the first, though if the leaked TF2 items are true, the participants this time around are (Spoilers, I suppose. Highlight downwards)
Sam From Sam & Max
GladOS from Portal Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2 Brock Samson from The Venture Bros Ash Williams from The Evil Dead
Which is, uh, really interesting and eclectic. The original Poker Night was pretty fun for what it was and had some fairly devious Poker AI, so looking forward to see what they have with this one. _________________
There's something weird about the console. I buy the cloud TV stuff as being real though I think the always on part was people jumping to conclusions over a fucking twitter post by a stupid nerd. Thing is, MS' hiring patterns have been very weird as well when dug up. They are looking for very little Kinect focused staff in their core studios for example. There was a bit of a nerd meltdown over Rare looking for a Kinect programmer till it turned out they were looking for only one person with Track IR experience and it basically gave credence they are doing Project Gotham 5. And they were looking for Brand Managers to look after new "AAA Core IP" of which there were four IP's to be taken care of. And allegedly XBLA they won't have as open as it was on 360 and are instead doing an internal greenlight system to only allow competent developers in (Which I'd imagine is because they don't want another Fez, as in perpetually delayed with an idiot lead designer killing its PR every week). And then you have a potential X-Factor in Illumiroom and pushing more immersion into core gaming. That's something PC can't do at the minute and if you put that in the hands of some imaginative developers, you could get some crazy and fascinating results.
Like, it seems that they will be using it as a multimedia box but still keeping the gaming clout in it as well. It's an interesting approach. I can still see some nerd rage over Kinect, but I'd imagine they learned their lesson from Kinect 1 and probably will let developers use it more as a passive device than requiring the player to be active.
It's a strange one, it seems off putting but at the same time, there's a potential in it. Especially if MS are willing to start taking more risks than Sony and Nintendo, as what they have shown so far seems to be seriously erring on the side of caution. _________________
No, that's too strong, especially outside America where cable is less relevant. Even within America, it's not clear what the future of cable is over the next five years. But it will certainly be an interesting development.
TV over Broadband is becoming popular in Europe and my console gets some regular use as an additional Sky box (As you can get Sky TV, Canal + or whatever your provider is in Europe). So I'd imagine they will tailor it to the different markets as required at launch and update it as needed to whatever developments are going on in TV.
Agreed though that it's an interesting development on top of the other interesting developments. _________________
It doesn't look too hot from being a prototype in development for only 6 months and the sorta not there yet Prime artstyle, but I'm going to take a contrarian stance and say that I wouldn't have been completely against this. Then, I kinda liked Echoes. Better reboot than DmC.
If MegaMan X was the Gritty reboot of MegaMan then what makes this? _________________
Looks like Durango is not always online and the "Always online" part is a disc drive less 360 that has limited functionality offline that can connect to it.
Nerds overreact over speculation over some nerds twitter rant. WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT. _________________

This story and post is so asinine it's surpasses neggy levels by a long way, well done RR.
Quote:
The “Xbox Mini” is not a 360 add-on, it is a stand alone product that contains Xbox 360 functions for gaming, and alone it is meant to compete with Apple TV. Since it is likely it will not have a disc drive, it is being designed with “always online” in mind, and with internet being required for Live functions. Xbox 360 Games can be played on it by purchasing Games on Demand on Xbox Live (for new purchases) or if already purchased, simply download it. This also applies to music and movies. To further clarify, the Durango will also have these (TV) functions, just with next-genration gaming hardware instead of Xbox 360 at a higher price.
When used with Durango, it offers connectivity with it for backwards compatibility with both disc based and On Demand games, and it’s no more different than what Sony will be doing with Gaikai for playing PS3 games on PS4, only with Xbox it will be done locally and not through the cloud. You can control the Xbox Mini under a single interface and not have to worry about switching between devices in a single display input.
These connectivity functions cannot work with existing Xbox 360 units due to the difference in external interface. The Xbox Mini was designed for this along side Durango.
Look at this, where the fuck to begin. Nerrrrrrrds.
So insulting the assine mass hysteria of idiots taking a twitter rant of an idiot as an absolute gospel truth that the next X-Box requires an internet connection is a "Neggy" post?
I gotta contact Microsoft and tell them there's a huge market for the game "Jump to conclusions" because fuck me if the internet doesn't love it the last few weeks. _________________
Fine then. I'm sorry for complaining that retards on the internet playing Chinese whispers/telephone with a twitter meltdown is stupid and posting a leak site with a fairly good accuracy rate which got what looks like a calculated leak from a Microsoft source because fuck facts and logic when there is bitching to do over vague tweets. Because that's how we source information now. Fuck Journalism.

that's irritating, Sega was doing such a decent job of PC ports lately and Generations was actually pretty good
Sega had a financial report a few days back that said they had 11 PC SKU's on the way this year so I don't think they are dropping support quite yet. Though I'd imagine three of those are TW Rome 2, TW Arena and Football Manager 2014. _________________
HIGH SCORE ON METACRITIC is the new reviewer quote, except i feel it's even worse because it's just a number rather then a meaningless but potentially fitting quote or w/e
also lol i just got the over 60 hours of gameplay part
given how dumb and vapid pull quotes tend to be on videogame boxes, citing metacritic scores actually kind of comes off as classier and more informative
Banjo Kazooie Gruntyland from the makers of Perfect Dark Zero
No thanks
I like the narrative that Viva Pinata never existed among the wider gamer community. It's like that massive blackspot people see past when they want to say "Oh but Microsoft Rare were never good".
List is fake yo' tho. Turned out one of the developers of those games contacted a mod at NeoGAF to say they weren't at E3 with that game. So Guess what game is in production and not at E3 then (Halo 5, most likely). _________________

Fair enough! I honestly forget it existing despite being the most well received thing they have done in years.
Still. Glory years etc
I hope MS have it on Steam soon since it was released on GFWL on PC (Or better, release Trouble In Paradise) because it's a super neat, if a bit frantic, strategy game with a really dark sense of humor and clever progression that deserved a wider audience.
Though looks like we will see some 360 support through the year. Lionhead's teasing a HD Remake of Fable 1 + The Lost Chapters
So what kind of music would you use in that trailer
Oh. Guess you gotta have that mainstream audience and the game sounds interesting enough to really harness control of the concept. The meltdown from people seems staggering though. Especially as Harmonix's recent hires included combat and story designers and when it first leaked out this morning, it seemed like it might have been an adventure game.
Since this is just one of those fancy new non-trailers, I was confused about what the game _was_. Then I saw this:
Oh.
Allrighty then.
Couple of people who played it at E3 judges week say it's something along the lines of ParaPara Paradise meets Child Of Eden with a bit of Frequency/Amplitude and not what you expect from the trailer. So I'm interested to see what it plays like.
Perhaps it's time for the regularly scheduled Videogame Bullshit Week Thread. _________________
