So I finally watched the Ninja Gaiden z trailer and jeez it is just about as awful and boring as has already been stated just about everywhere

I like the pulp comic-book appearance though, too bad it's attached to this mess

EDIT: Man I would really like to see the ending for this game having Yaiba trying to get revenge on Ryu, and while the player is in full control Ryu just beats him again and tells him to stop being a jerk and get a life before poofing into an owl and flying away

You guys act like they wouldn't make another CoD if Ghosts under performed

Hell, EA made two Nu-MoH games before they gave up, and those had a blisteringly long 2 years between them. Besides, Activision has Bungie now, they don't need Infinity Ward's embalmed corpse anymore.

Nah, I know it doesn't matter. It's just that if it underperformed, that would mean fewer people had played it and the world would be that tiny bit better.

My sense is that CoD has peaked and sales will probably decline from now on, but that doesn't mean there won't be a bazillion more sequels (much like The Simpsons, a formerly megapopular series can have a long afterlife as a merely popular one).

Well, it's already peaked, I think year-to-year has been on a decline since Blops 1, but at the same time, I think Activision learned some of their lesson from xxx Hero eating itself into non-popularity.

why am i writing "year-to-year" in reference to something that isn't a sports game, what has video games become

I don't agree with the theory that Guitar Hero died because they made too many, I think it was just a fad to begin with and the genre was destined to suddenly die no matter what they did. Meanwhile military shootmans is an evergreen genre so it's more about how fresh it feels compared to the competition.

Military shootmans may be evergreen, but you can only sell what is the same base game with slightly different tweaks so many times before people get wise. I think EA is wise to have kept BF releases 2 years apart, because even though BF and CoD games share similar dev cycles, when there's a break in releases with one and not the other, one feels fresher (relatively speaking).

Even if plastic instrument games were a fad (which is part of it), saturation and off-kilter ideas (sup DJ Hero) will help kill anything. Activision killed Tony Hawk games too, with a combination of yearly releases and game stagnation (xxx Hero games are just a better, more recent example, with nearly as much built-in cost as CoD+map packs), so the idea that it could happen to CoD isn't too far fetched.

I really need to stop reading about the industry.

Not having really played FPSs since circa Quake 2, I'm just amazed the yearly model has taken off at all. Couldn't all of the annual changes just be expansion packs? Or mods? Why are the guns still shooting bullets?

What I'm saying is, I am very old.

There are expansion packs!

The More hilarious thing is CoD Ghosts is still using modified Quake 3 engine with hitscan! They've used that same modified engine for shit 6 games?

The hilarious thing about Ghosts still using idtech 3 is how god awful looking the PC and nextgen versions are, on top of the hilarious PC system requirements (6 GIGS OF RAM, which the game will literally not let you boot with unless you get a unofficial fix, then it only uses 2 GB) and performance issues on the manliest of master race machines.

I doubt the performance problems are really Quake 3 engine's fault, it's more that all the senior engine programmers left to Respawn. There isn't any "core" of id tech 3 that's impossible to modify so it probably bears a rather distant resemblance to it at this point. It's like a robot that had all its parts replaced many times over and only a couple of screws here and there remain from the original version, is it really the same robot?

As for Tony Hawk, I think skateboarding is somewhat faddish as well, it was really mainstream a decade ago and is back to being a niche subculture today.

Highly-placed anonymous people on the internet seem to think the 6GB thing is just a kludgy way to stop mods from working, which seems pretty hamfisted even by the standards of control-addicted games publishers.

Calling The Troops

I think military shootmans actually derive their popularity from the cultural mood rather than their mechanics. As long as post-9/11 jingoism persists, so will Call of Duty.

While I won't argue that some parts have been completely torn out and replaced (the renderer, most prominently) if MW2's PC port was any indication, there's still enough of id Tech 3's core left to do a lot of silly things in bending the game to the will of less scrupulous players in a very short amount of time.

skateboarding is actually pretty far from a niche subculture, it might be in more rural areas, but in bigger cities it's more popular than it ever actually has been. filtering even more into the mainstream than it did in the 90's with shows like Fantasy Factory and ryan shecklers docudrama that he had on MTV and things like build and skate on H&G network (which is probably not its actual name, but an accurate summation of what the show is about) that and thanks to tumblr culture longboarding and banana boards (which are basically pointless with the invention of modern skateboards, but Tumblr) coming back into popularity

as an example, one of youtubes more watched channels the last few months has been Original Skateboards with their Longboarding Back to ____ series
this also reminds me that nobody has made a good longboarding game

they're probably idiots and don't understand that to do fliptricks on a longboard depends on whether your board is set up for street or vert, and additionally has to have trucks angled right for it after the fact

Canadians can get PS3/XBox 360 versions of Battlefield 4, CoD: Ghosts and ACIV for free this weekend if they trade in any current generation title game at Future Shop and Best Buy. Some areas won't have it but you can trade in games that you wouldn't get 5 dollars for at EB for a 60 dollar game. One game per day per location.

Uh

under normal circumstances I might not take the trouble to participate in this goofy almost-scam, but there's a Best Buy like 15 minutes from my apartment, walking.

I guess I may as well get $150 to smoke three cigarettes

Yeah this is pretty sick. I guess Im getting 3 AAA titles i barely care about. I might even pool my effort w/ some of my brothers and friends to get more copies of these to then sell off. if three of us go in on one day, then two on another or anything of the sort then we can sell them at EB, preorder games w/ that credit and cancel the preorders for cash.
