someday i will finish my dissertation on how halo 2 is a monument to all of vidcons' sins
- the first game to be designed around its e3 demo
- the first widespread midnight madness
- the first steelbook special edition
- cliffhanger in the dark middle chapter of a trilogy
- but who cares really cuz ONLINE MULTIPLAYER
essentially a template for the modern aaa blockbuster
edit:
- CELEBRITY VOICE TALENT featuring david cross and michelle rodriguez
- breaking benjamin and hoobastank contributing to soundtrack |

Are game developers / writers ever going to be able to describe their own game without relying on the list of 100 Sanctioned Buzzwords and/or direct namedropping of other games ("It's like X, but with Y!"). How do they actually talk to each other when they're making the damn thing. Do they watch speedruns and take notes? Do the artists go in and add just enough color depth to Metroid pixel tiles just enough to not go to jail? The indies sometimes seem almost worst than the AAA's as far as the sheer unabashed plagiarism that abounds, because everyone knows they Just Need to Eat, and they're begging for your Donation-As-Entertainment-Experience, so let's put out this literal clone of another game, and we'll put some deep, cryptic, emotional textboxes in it somewhere to justify its existence, obviously this will elevate it beyond the source material, I mean, "inspiration."
(Sorry, this is just me being mad that my Actual Original Ideas will never get made, and also this was one of the mornings I didn't get to eat.) |

it's been a fucking HORRID year for mac ports, probably because there's still no OpenGL4 (DX11) until 10.9, with means no renderer parity, which means wrappers within wrappers, and just cleaving off lines of renderer code (but obviously not removing or even showing they're disabled in the options). the borderlands port struggles with [i]mipmapping[i]! (though, honestly, that's what you get for playing it)
and in a lot of cases, just sloppy as shit programming. dota 2 on the mac is PURE FUCKING GARBAGE, it crashes when you select random characters, it will lose audio and never get it back if you dare to alt-tab, you can't even turn on SPECULARITY (a doom 3 feature!) on most gpus, and it runs about 3x faster in wine. fuck you, valve, for releasing it like this.
i mean, this is the era of ALL X86 ALL THE TIME, and you're already shitting out OpenGL versions of renderers because you gotta get all that PlayStation money. what the hell is going on here. it's 2013 and Aspyr still exists! they shop them out to a mac port house (which means you can't get both versions on steam, cuz they have to get paid, which means it only appears on the dreaded App Store (btw, binf is now available!!!!) |

"Speaking personally, at the height of the bubble, all the talk about 'games for moms' began to grate a bit," recalls Area/code's Cancienne. "After a while, it was hard for me not to hear 'but a middle-aged woman in Ohio won't understand that' as a dismissive, reductive, and small-minded excuse to dumb down gameplay and hew to established conventions."
In Cancienne's view, in fact, the laser-focus on an imagined, mass-market "moms and middle-aged women" demographic might have been where the Facebook boom began to waver: "You had a huge population of product managers, game designers, and developers making games that they themselves didn't like," he says.
"What's worse, they were supposedly making them for this cohort that existed as a cartoon -- the middle aged mom sitting at home, bored with her life," he adds. "Given this mostly male, mostly disinterested group of people cynically making games for this other group that existed primarily as a stereotype, it's not hard to see how the bubble burst." |
