Sega Rally Revo for 360 & PS3 was not too hot. The graphics were candy-colored like every Sega racing title should be, but the controls were wonky as hell. Cars did not turn so much as rotate, if you catch my drift. Because of the consensus surrounding the home console Revo, the PSP Sega Rally entry has been unfairly ignored.
Looks like a Sega racing game to me!
The PSP Sega Rally is not Revo, despite its appearance. It wasn't developed by Sega Racing Studios. It doesn't have any of the same tracks. Interestingly, though, the color palette of Sega Rally (PSP) is nearly identical to Revo's, and the tracks are set in the same fictional locations featured in Revo. The HUD is identical to Revo's. The selection of cars is the same, so you get modern cars and older favorites like the Stratos and Delta (and non-Lancia classics too). Bug Bear, the developer, obviously coordinated with Sega Racing Studios to make sure both games look related.
Do you remember the awesome Alpine 2 track in Revo? It's not in this game, okay?
Fortunately, the similarities are only skin deep. What's different is the handling. It's far closer to the tight handling of Sega Rally 1 & 2. I am happy to report there is none of the floaty remote-feeling handling that people justly criticized in Revo.
I did not take this screenshot. I would never take a screenshot if I was slumming it up in 5th place.
This a good game, my brothers. |

Ooh, I'll have to try this out. Thanks for the post!
I have a copy of Sega Rally 2006 to play around with too, but I've heard Career Mode has a bit of language barrier. _________________ HeavyViper@Twitter ~~~ HeavyViper@Soundcloud

Woah this is pretty interesting, I had no idea the PSP game is worth getting.

Sega Rally 2 had tight handling? I don't know 'bout that, felt more like soap in a bathtub to me, your car never stopped sliding sideways, almost like a hovercraft.

I got this translation from I don't know where, maybe ntsc-uk or rllmuk.
| Code: |
Once started, the player has is presented with the race entry screen where they can sign up for forthcoming events. At the start, one can only partake in 'open' events, time trails and other challenges (like a typically timed rally, sponsorship event). Prizes can be obtained by doing well (placing first, so far).
Once entry has been confirmed, the main menu screen is available showing:
Garage
Race (takes you to the next event)
Home (where one can enter new races, etc...)
Sponsorship (if offered)
History/Records
The Garage has more options:
Configuration (parts, class, etc...)
Shop (buy new parts here)
Practice
Car selection
Most of it is easy enough to understand. By default (I think), the cars are on automatic. The transmission option is in Garage->Config->Transmission->Auto or Manual (1st and 2nd option). The options go:
Class
Parts
Tyre
Dampers
Transmission.
One has to configure tyres yourself and is essential to doing well in a rally. The tyre options are:
Slicks
Wet slicks
Hard gravel
Soft gravel
Wet gravel
and Snow.
The shop are:
Air filter
Exhaust
Muffler
Flywheel
Clutch
LSD
Suspension
Brake
Gear
Alloys
If you're unsure, just select a part anyway and you get a little picture to show what is what. Performance changing parts are broken down into response and power, which is shown down the bottom right hand side of the screen. |
I haven't done too much career yet though, it's your typical time sink where you start underpowered and level up. The only reason to play it is probably to unlock more tracks for time trial mode and to hear that cool track that plays before every race.
All of that's pretty unimportant, because there's ARCADE MODE! Play that, I like it a lot. I love the handling, drifting feels great (especially on tarmac, go figure) and the game's pretty smooth. You can unlock the original game and cars too, DO IT! |

Maybe tight isn't the right word. More like responsive, especially when compared to Revo. |
