It's time for us to speculate on what our Game of the Year of 2013 is going to be! I took a look at GameFAQs to see what's coming. This is only a guess as to what I think might be interesting, so feel free to add to the lists!

The only worthwhile Wii release left is the European release of Vampire Crystals, which is a shoot 'em up. No idea if it's any good.

For Wii U there's just Rayman Legends and the European release of Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge (though that's just a port).

For PlayStation 3, we have, among others:
  • Anarchy Reigns
  • Dead Space 3
  • Dmc: Devil May Cry
  • Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory
  • Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
  • Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
  • Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

Disgaea Dimension 2 doesn't have a NA or EU release date yet, but it's certainly coming.

For Xbox 360, we have, among others:
  • Anarchy Reigns
  • Dead Space 3
  • Dmc: Devil May Cry
  • Gears of War: Judgment
  • Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII
  • Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Yes, it looks a lot like the list for PS3.

For DS there's nothing interesting in the list, but I know Ghostlight is going to release Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2 in Europe.

For 3DS, we have, among others:
  • Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate
  • Code of Princess
  • Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • Fractured Soul (3DSWare)
  • Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overlocked (Europe)
  • Unchained Blades

For PlayStation Portable, we have Generation of Chaos: Pandora's Reflection. But only in North America. Weren't Aksys Games and XSEED still going to release some games? Still waiting for a Persona 2: Eternal Punishment announcement from Atlus USA.

For PlayStation Vita, we have, among others:
  • Dead or Alive 5 Plus
  • Earth Defense Force 2017 Portable
  • Persona 4 Golden (Europe)
  • Soul Sacrifice

I don't think Barkley will make it out before 2014 but I'd love to be wrong

if no one's bought my 3DS from me yet ($160 incl. SM3DL, bangai-O spirits, and crimson shroud, get it while it's hot folks) I may give fire emblem a shot, it looks like this one's added some breadth that kept me from getting into prior installments

I'm looking forward to a playable version of Skywind, the Morrowind remake in the Skyrim engine

reasonably enthusiastic about GTAV and EDF 2025, though I fear both may fall just shy of playing well enough for me find them compelling

there's a new Musou title being released downloadable and local co-op is enough for me to enjoy them in a Simple 2000 sort of way

not much on the horizon for PC, but I'm not worried about that, as a solid two-thirds of the games I've really enjoyed from the past couple of years have largely been thanks to Steam sales and word of mouth.

and still I am nowhere near finishing English Country Tune or La-Mulana (can someone please tell me where to get my first ranged weapon just so I feel like I'm getting somewhere) though I can't really play either of those for more than 45 minutes at a time so they'll be a while yet

new Tomb Raider
Last of Us

unlikely: retail-versions of
GTR3
rFactor2

hoping for:
surprising releases like Sonic & All Stars in 2012.

EDF 4 seems like the safest bet right now. The trailer looked mercifully devoid of the kind of polish that'd turn it into a regular shootmans.

The only other things I've got on my radar for next year aside from Vita ports are Simcity: too smug to assign it a number and Obsidian's South Park game (which is apparently still coming out in spite of THQ's bankrupcy?).

Well, I'm looking forward to Barkley 2, Dark Souls II, whatever Hidetaka Miyazaki's working on (though I imagine that won't be around until at least 2014, sadly), Cyberpunk 2077, Day Z standalone, Anarchy Reigns (which I still want to call Max Anarchy 'cause that's a better title — and I'd love to see a PC port but hey maybe I'll actually buy a game for my PS3 for once), Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, Routine, Shadowrun Returns, Radio the Universe, Starbound, Kenshi, GTA5, Ziggurat on my Android phone, Fez on my PC, etc. Curious about SMT4 and Soul Sacrifice, but hey that's two handheld devices I'll likely never own.

GOTY for me will be some sort of iOS or Windows Indie game that I haven't even heard of yet.

On current form, GOTY 2013 will probably be a game by Michael Brough or Alexander 'Droqen' Martin. Those two guys are on fire right now.

I've played one of Brough's almost-finished games, an iPad game called Helix, and it will certainly be a contender. It's just a little score attack game though, so maybe from one point of view it won't count.

I guess the Witness will be good too.

All the commercial games already announced will either be disappointing or won't hit 2013. I'm not saying that out of parochial indie allegiance but for three reasons:

- recent form is not good for many of the developers who have announced big titles for 2013.
- I take it as a given that nothing great will come out on Wii U or Vita in 2013, due to insufficient developer buy-in. And most of the big guys on Sony/MS will be crunching for new replacement console launches rather than putting new games out.
- Any big-budget game that does come out in 2013 has probably either been rushed to get in before the new consoles or is not considered good enough to hold over for the new consoles.

I'm still optimistic Dark Souls 2 will be good but if it hits 2013 the chances don't seem as good. Same with Dragon's Crown.

My prediction for 2013 is that this will finally, finally be the year for linux gaming. We have a perfect storm brewing:

- Windows 8 is a total shitshow for the game publishers with their own digital stores (Valve, EA, Ubi) which covers the great majority of the commercial market (even more so next year as retail continues its death spiral)
- Valve is moving to distance itself from Windows and just launched Steam for linux as an escape hatch. EA and Ubi probably won't follow suit until it's too late, but what else is new?
- Valve's mysterious console will probably debut in 2013 and will almost certainly run Linux
- Ouya is on Android, Android is basically Linux. I'm not sure Ouya will succeed, but it's part of the mix to be sure.
- New consoles from Sony and MS won't be ready until holiday 2014, which is about a year too late. (I don't have any insider info here, just guesswork) This opens the door

I really doubt that this will mean success for Linux as a desktop system, since it will mostly happen on single-purpose gaming systems like the Ouya and 'steam box'. But who knows?

I asked the Ouya guy about that on twitter and he suggested that this will often just mean the basic game is a demo and can be upgraded via IAP to a full version (you know, shareware model of the early 90s)

oh, I forgot about cyberpunk 2077 (are we expecting that so soon after witcher 2?) and the witness (looks like my oblique puzzle game plate is about to get even more full). cd projekt is pretty close to being my favourite studio with an actual budget these days (thank you gog profits).

anyway, I mostly agree with benefit about this year being more interesting in terms of form. launches have gotten to be so bad software-wise (I think the last consoles that actually released alongside top-tier games were the gamecube and the xbox) that there's no reason to expect otherwise for the ps4/720. meanwhile, as I just got done posting in the axe, linux gaming is pretty much already there on the desktop if you know the proper way to spend 20 minutes configuring wine and have an nvidia card (as of a only a year or three ago), and I'd love for those ifs to go away thanks to valve.

Actually, you're right — Cyberpunk 2077 is probably a year or two off. Scratch that from the list. It's one I'll be watching, though.

y'know, remote, as similar as our tastes usually are at the end of the day, I completely forgot anarchy reigns even existed and I'm still pretty skeptical of it, and I can't really see myself loving a single one of the upcoming indies you mentioned. kenshi looks like a combination of mount and blade and dwarf fortress in such a way that I am almost guaranteed to never play it, and a lot of the others involve some twist on jrpg mechanics (might want to, but won't play) or horror (won't look twice).

but realistically I'm most excited for the ps3 becoming a cheap dumping ground for mature franchises whom I haven't paid attention to for close to a decade but can now produce something that's good stupid fun with minimal dev time (like I said: musou, gta, edf).

I'm not even going to take any bets. I'm not sure if I'd have a lot of time to pick things up in 2013, and I know for a fact I'm not even remotely interested in AAA blockbusters that aren't named "Dark Souls 2".

On the Linux front: If they do something about the library and graphics driver situations for videogames, it's a done deal. Linux's desktop usability has taken enormous strides this past decade and it's about as plug and play as you could hope it to be these days. I know a fair number of people that would love to ditch Windows but it's where all their games are. And considering that Wine is also amazingly good now, that's becoming less of an issue. (Seriously, I am developing in XNA and then running the game in wine on linux on my desktop and it's perfect. Need to native port to Monogame sometime but yeah, not a priority right this minute.)

Some of those are just things I'm curious about. I'm not convinced Kenshi, A Machine for Pigs, or even GTA5 will be great, but I am interested!

I don't think anything I listed, save for SMT4 (and maybe Barkley 2 kinda), features any sort of jRPG mechanics?

Realistically I could stop after Barkley 2, Dark Souls II, and (unless it's a ways off) Miyazaki's next project. The rest is just icing, mostly. I'll probably play a lot of Starbound if it ends up being even better than Terraria, and it looks like it might.

I googled a few of the unfamiliar titles you mentioned and I believe radio the universe was described as jrpg-esque?

mauve, I'm glad you're having good luck with xna+wine -- dotnet dependencies are one of the few things that don't always work right after the massive strides in the past couple years.

something that hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet and likely won't make it out in time unless it's rushed for the new consoles' launch (though I say with some relief that that'd be more of an ubisoft maneuver) but has lots of potential is Mirror's Edge 2.

Well, sort of.

Quote:
Q> What's this all about?

I blended classic Zelda and dark science fiction and drank the ensuing mixture. It was Radio the Universe.

Players will feel aesthetic and gameplay influences from titles like Yume Nikki, Symphony of the Night, Hotline Miami, and Dark Souls, with a tinge of 2D JRPGs thrown into the mix.

RtU is a challenging and atmospheric sci-fi game with SNES-style visuals and a sinister, offbeat narrative.

Actually, yeah, I'm pretty hopeful for that one.

Yeah, it's not perfect, there's still a few issues to iron out, but it's definitely working. Worst thing I need to do sometimes is force things to run on a single cpu to prevent multithreading-related crashes.

I need to update to a 1.5.x build but I hear really good things are going on in there. It's a great time to be a Linux guy right now.

Edit: Also, that Radio game sounds like buzzword salad and the ks page did little to sell me on it as being a real thing rather than a bunch of concepts that may or may not work together. Time will tell, I guess.

i think i played it before you did foddy so i win!

i am a brough bro as well ok

i like helix a lot. i told him to ask toups to make music for it. i wonder if he ever talked to toups?

it really, really is a great game, though. it's very essential. it's a non-shooting game of position and movement, where a lot of similar games are about position (super hexagon) OR movement (any dumb game about jumping). instead of "get to a location quickly" or "move gracefully right now" it's "navigate gracefully and meaningfully".

you could say it's about Action Pathfinding!

it's a great game and i can't wait to tweet-link about it every day.

foddy, if you like helix, you'll also like action button entertainment's FASTERBLASTER.

i would nominate our Untitled Platform Game For PlayStation Vita as game of the year, or our Untitled Four-Player Minimalist E-Sport For PC, though that would be jerky.

so i'll just agree that it's probably something i have yet to hear of! i look forward to being surprised!

uhhh, maybe Spy Party and/or Monaco will be released for people who aren't quite cool enough at some point?

Heart of the Swarm

really though it's unlikely I play much of anything that is released next year. this year I basically played Diablo III and Hotline Miami...and that's about it, as far as 2012 games are concerned

Yeah, the only reason all games need to be free to play is to absolve the Ouya makers of the responsibility of wrapping DRM around an .apk file (android executable). If someone wants to release a game where you download the game for free, but can't get past the title screen without a pay wall they will probably let it happen (but it will fail when everything else has at least some playable content).
