if WATCH_DOGS would actually make a 2013-date, it might be a strong contender. Same thing applies for that Capcom-cyber-game as well, though I forgot the name of that one. _________________

| I'm looking forward to The Last of Us. I'm just going to go ahead and say Bioshock Infinite too. |

I expect to begrudgingly enjoy Tomb Raider 9 and legitimately enjoy Bioshock Infinite. Also I'm probably going to enjoy at least two Wayforward games in 2013 which the rest of SB decries as inadequate because they all live in a fantasy land. _________________

Not a lot of pre-release hype for indie games.
Of games that are announced I'd say Rockfish (ios) is a contender, but I'd be surprised if was my actual pick at the end of the year.
probably either something I haven't heard of or The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa _________________

I would be fairly shocked if Dodonpachi Saidaioujou (360) isn't my favorite game of 2013, seeing as how both Daioujou and Daifukkatsu are among my favorite games ever. Haven't had the good fortune to play the arcade version, but I can't believe Cave going out with a bang on 360 will let me down.
I also have really high expectations for Platinum's 2013 schedule, particularly Wonderful 101 (which basically sold me a WiiU launch system). Metal Gear Rising and Bayonetta 2 if it shows up in 2013 also have my attention.
I dunno that remakes of 90s RPGs will be best-of-year material for me, but I'm very interested in both Soul Hackers and Dragon Quest VII on 3DS.
Hopefully something interesting for holiday new Xbox (and PS4?) launches?
Even though I'm not heavily into PC gaming, I'll probably become smitten with some random PC game, a la Torchlight II or Legend of Grimrock in 2012. |

| if 2012 wasn't the year where indies decided that the only way to retain their indie cred in the face of decidedly mainstream recognition was to simply not release their video games outside of parties for other developers and sycophantic bloggers, then 2013 certainly will be. |

Pre-release parties seem like a really smart way to market multiplayer indie titles. _________________

I'm currently making a 16-player videogame that will only ever be shown once, in a 9th floor space in Manhattan, in May. I'm not doing it for indie cred, I'm doing it to annoy people like you! |

Oh, I figured that. I admit to some kind of curiosity about the game, but I don't have any anticipation of enjoyment. |

since most people probably are feeling "meh" (at best) about this, guess that your target audience is a very exclusive one (and maybe even willing to pay a premium, make no mistake). _________________

I'd say that The Witness has as good a chance as anything as being my favorite game of the year. It could also be awful! It's got a low floor and a high ceiling.
GTAV is one where it should be my game of the year; I'm also pretty certain that it won't be. I've been playing through GTAIV and the expansions lately and should really bother to sit down and write something on them. |

I just replayed Braid recently and it's got uncommonly good pacing for what's a bunch of logic puzzles. It's rarely tediously easy nor tediously difficult/obtuse. I trust that Witness is at least not going to be actively bad even if the idea of solving abstract line puzzles between exploring doesn't sound promising; Blow has a lot of insight into making a game interesting on a micro level. |

Agree with that assessment. The Witness will have the added benefit of being explorable, which depending on the success of the art and level design could add a whole nother layer of good stuff, but also the drawback of having voiceover, which could make Blow's purple, leaden prose unavoidable and ubiquitous instead of isolated in little gameless story spaces that you can forget about while actually playing the game as in Braid. We shall see. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

| yeah, the fact that he's not writing this one means it may actually be very good. Braid is a darned good game, Blow's just a terrible writer. |

| I for one like Blow's purple, leaden prose. I seem to be the only one who does. Dunno, it came across as refreshing in comparison to all the blandly competent writing out there: I like to see a distinctive prose style. I took it partly as the whining voice of the sad little protagonist and partly as a self-referential joke mocking how arty the game is. The game otherwise has a sense of humor so I don't think I'm entirely off base in viewing the totally humorless prose as itself a meta-joke. |
