Speaking of PSX games, Atlus is chickening out of localising the PSP remake of Persona 2: Eternal Punishment and putting the PSX version on PSN instead. _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

So far the combat pacing seems really slow and the difficulty is pretty up there. I'm going to keep at it as I'm pretty much charmed to death by anything R-Type. _________________

I keep meaning to pop into this thread and say I've played through Metroid Fusion and Yoshi's Island GBA on this here PSP and they both worked perfectly outside of the idontknowifitwasevenactually sound glitch. Could of been real GBA troubles for all I know. GBA emulation on PSP A++++
SNES Emulation.....

Supposedly the PlayStation Blog post was going to "touch upon" why Persona 2: Eternal Punishment for PSP couldn't be localised. That post has now been made. All it says is that there were "unusual circumstances". Ladies and gentlemen, we have been trolled.
I'll just wait for a fan translation and buy the JP version. _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

SNES emulation is still bad on PSP? That sucks. I remember contemporaries like Neo Geo and CPS2 stuff running great ages ago. |

Yeah, the sound stutters a bit at times and, if you make use of save states, it may desync. Other than that it's really great, just a shame that it doesn't support scanlines.
What's the best SNES emulator for PSP? The one I'm using seems slower than the one I used 1~2 years ago. |

Like all PSP homebrew it's a pile of different versions of the same emulator. One of them is probably better overall, but no one has been the crazy person to figure out which emulator that is.
It's probably time to grab every PSP emulator/interesting homebrew before they start dissapearing forever. _________________ My Hawt Blog Vita Games

How would it support scanlines? The PSP's resolution is too low. _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

GBA exceeded the visual fidelity of SNES in all regards except resolution, but I was really salty about the sound chip. Shit sucked.

I like the GBA's sound chip. :( A lot of the time it doesn't sound good is because of the low quality of the samples it's fed. _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

Yeah, maybe it's just often biting off more than it can chew. I actually really enjoy a lot of original monochrome GB music, probably because it doesn't rely on samples as much as GBA games do. |

Lovely creation, isn't it? Nice and soft and it keeps it relatively safe from drops and scratches. _________________ HeavyViper@Twitter ~~~ HeavyViper@Soundcloud

blech.
the screen gets scratched all the time. I don't like handhold designs that don't include a screen cover component. it's cramped. it's shiny and ugly. the dpad is shit. the analog is pretty crappy. UMDs are awful on all levels |

Outputting to a tv was a large reason for purchase but I've said this a million times and in retrospect it was prolly a silly home console purchase, but at least I didn't sink a fortune into a Neo Geo??
If I cared enough about HD I would also likely be mad about image quality but I don't. The artifacts are somewhat annoying though. I should have gone with a PS3 but expect some dumb shit like "must own a psp and must be turned on in order to play those games on your home console." When I can buy things reasonably and sidestep the awful service hoops, that will be the time I get one of those. |

Mine is still scratch-free...

Not sure what you're talking about here. Do you mean an extra level of plastic on top of the actual screen? Because the PSP-3000 has that. Don't know about the others. If you're talking about a screen protector, none of the handheld consoles have that...
It is a little cramped, I'll give you that.
| Quote: |
| it's shiny and ugly. |
I don't think so.
I hear the PSP-1000's wasn't that good, but the next designs are decent.
| Quote: |

I think the design is a fine compromise.
| Quote: |

This is quite vague. Sure, they're a proprietary format, but cartridges on other handheld consoles are as well. As for the UMD itself, I like how there's a protective case which seems to almost entirely elminate scratches on the actual disc.

I've noticed that you only defend what you happen to own. When it came out you never would have defended it! (because you didn't own it)

Why are you scratching your PSP screen all the time with your abrasive sandpaper raspy hands? Just stop doing that, man. Come on.
Also you don't have to use UMDs at all at this point. I don't. I imagine most of the folks in this thread don't. I ripped the iso from my copy of Ys 7 and never looked back.

| I have sort of an affection for the UMD and the Memory Stick despite them being evidence of Sony's annoying love of proprietary formats (moreso in the case of the latter, perhaps). |

Real sad that at least a handful of games UMD game discs I have can do installation to memory stick that STILL manages to be much slower than a ripped iso, nearly as much space, and require the umd to run anyway. Why even bother when it's the worst of both worlds. Course I didn't play enough late 90s pc games to enjoy when they allowed full installations and assume it's a similar feeling.
(Yet all psn purchases so far seem to be compressed enough to cause some audio popping when streaming out to laptop.) |

Just a theory here, but perhaps the cases where install data is used are so infrequent because it was done out of necessity rather than for convenience. The few games I have that have a Data Install function, specifically Dissidia duodecim and P3Portable, are far bigger in size than the vast majority of the PSP library, sitting around 1.1GB in ISO form. I'd imagine that means a lot of big chunks of data are transferred from the storage medium to memory quite frequently. What I'm getting at is that perhaps data installs were used for those titles to match the load times of the majority of UMD games, rather than make standard speeds shorter. Kind of a depressing thought, really.
Then again, looking at my ISO folder just now, Ridge Racers 2 sits at a whopping 1.4 gigs in ISO form, and courses in that load in a matter of 1 or 2 seconds. So maybe it wasn't a volume issue so much as a coding issue, which would explain why it varies from game to game.

That is disappointing to hear, considering how sensitive I am to audio. Makes me hesitant to buy any big titles from PSN, even if they are cheap. _________________ HeavyViper@Twitter ~~~ HeavyViper@Soundcloud

Pretty much. I didn't realize until recently how much of a umd/box&book collection I amassed. Prolly isn't that much compared to most folks though. |

Because you don't have enough room on your Memory Sticks? Personally I have a small 32 MB one for save files and a 2 GB one for the rest (and their associated save files). _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!
