This is a bit misleading. The Wii's CPU is basically a more advanced GameCube CPU. The Pentium II to the original Pentium, if you will.

From what I read the disc drive can't accomodate GameCube discs on newer Wiis. If you mod them with a drive that can, like a Wode, it can play GameCube games.
Curiously, the latest Wii bundle here in Europe, the Inazuma Eleven Strikers pack, features a Wii that is backwards compatible. |
Presumably they're just getting rid of backstock. Like how when Microsoft sent me my 5th Xbox years after they stopped making them without HDMI ports, mine didn't have a HDMI port :< |
