They're not really recommendable though.

That looks way more organized than when I try to cobble together some 4 Dualshocks via MotioninJoy. :(

I have wisely decided not to undo the wire ties until I start to set these up at the show (No Quarter at NYU). As soon as they're untied, they'll instantly form a permanently tangled mass of spaghetti.

do these provide verisimilitude for retro gaming? basically i'm looking at emulating NES/SNES games and then I'm looking at SNES USB pad reviews and then I'm shaking my head vigorously. also i could always use another 360 pad for xbla

Noppoo Choco Mini $100+
KBC Poker $100+
Filco $120+

Obviously $120 is a lot, but CMQFPros have been reported to be made at the same factory as Filcos. The price difference is due to consumer trust in build quality vs. industry trust in consumer purchasing. These boards also have less flair than their Razer and Logitech mechanical counterparts.

Steelseries 6GV2 is $90 too and worth mentioning because it's really clean but enjoys gaming rather than boutique keyboard levels of distribution.

If it weren't for its reputation of being of pretty poor build quality I would probably own this already. Does anyone know if that stuff is overblown though? Really itching for a retro controller right about now.

To date, I think I've gone through two Logitech Dual Actions, one Saitek and two USB Saturns. I don't know why controllers are always breaking on me. game2hard

I swear by the Saturn pad, but I'm wary of ready-made USB solutions. First was a Retrolink which gave me a shock much like reaching under a vehicle to grasp the clammy hand of a dead lover, that died after 20 minutes of Twinkle Star Sprites. Second came in a plastic bag and looked and felt like an authentic controller, but only survived 6 months. Eventually I went for a Bliss-box with a stock pad and that was a Great Decision. Only regret is that I didn't splurge for a second port, and/or another port for a Gamecube pad, because for all the discomfort those have given me over the years I've come to realize how indispensable analog sticks with octagonal grooves are. Anything less makes Super Monkey Ball really depressing.

Bumping this because my Hori Pad EX2 Turbo just broke. It's been almost 4 months, and the left trigger no longer registers. I can hear something rattling around in there. Anybody had any similar issues?

Also, anybody have one they're willing to sell? The prices on Amazon are kinda ridiculous right now. I just wanna play videogames~

Good USB saturn pads are impossible to find

You could go try to pinch one off all the Shoryuken fatties who bought 10 each, but who knows if they'll part with them.

What I did for my second one was I just bought a cheapo hong-kong one and a real saturn pad, then just swapped the PCBs. It's p. easy and works p. well. Shoulder buttons require a little too much force, but I never use them anyway, so.

I cannot say enough times how much I love using my classic controllers to play old video games.
I use this usb connector
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B003711698
and xpadder's software to convert it into key presses when needed.

Even if you don't already own two classic controllers they sell on amazon for $11 meaning you can get two top notch gaming controllers running off your pc for a little over $40 that's a hell of a deal.

In my opinion the classic controler is the best ever made.

For several years, I faithfully loved my Hori Gameboy Player controller. Then one day, while playing Mother 3, the A button (the best feature aside from the d-pad) started feeling awful and wouldn't always register a press.

I finally unscrewed the controller and found that the rubber membrane had somehow torn, meaning that nipple thing with the carbon dot wasn't always hitting the spot. I made a few attempts to fix it but failed. I've never had something like that happen with a controller before.

I actually have a backup controller I bought years ago for $20, but I'm scared to open it now since the other one broke and they now cost over a hundred dollars on ebay.

Later I waited to buy a case for my 3DS XL until Hori came out with theirs, only to discover it was clearly made for a DSi XL which meant the unit would slide around inside the case, which meant there was no point at all.

Sorry to hear about the Hori Ex 2 breaking. This news makes me question buying from the brand again, though I admit I still love them.

so i bought a hori fighting commander 3 pro pad and i love it to death.

now i want a dual analogue pad that will do the equivalent for 3d games, since i've realized i sort of hate the sticks and buttons on the official 360 pad. given that i already have the fc3p, is there any reason to get another pad with 6 face buttons?

trying to decide between
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Pad-EX-Turbo-Black/dp/B002LT9PXQ
and
http://www.amazon.com/HORI-PS3-FPS-Assault-3-PlayStation/dp/B008XHCMLM

i only play on pc so the system doesn't matter. i slightly prefer the bigger buttons and equally-spaced sticks on the ps3 pad, but that led is pretty fucking ugly. curious about the form factor on the 360 pad since i've seen complaints the fps assault is over-sized and i don't have big monster hands. mention of the buttons on the ex 2 feeling good are enticing, reed's faulty trigger is not.....

What are the options for a good controller now that those hori pads are going for >150 dollars?

Is the hori gem pad any good? It looks hideous but I don't care too much about that.

Note that while I haven't used this specific pad I have used pads from Mad Catz that are effectively this model for years now, and I can say that after having had them for a long time and putting them through intensive use, I've never had a problem with them.

http://www.amazon.com/Mad-Catz-Street-Fighter-Tekken-FightPad/dp/B006ZTHGDO/ref=sr_1_14?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1385763215&sr=1-14&keywords=mad+catz+360+usb+controller

If you like six-button pads, they're definitely my favorite after Saturn USB controllers (which are now rare dinosaurs).

haha holy shit. and the fcp3 is like ~100 now. wild!

if you're looking for the saturn layout and would consider a clicky-switch neo geo style thumb stick, might be worth checking out the pdp versus pads.

i bought one on james' recommendation, and was anticipating a price jump since it doesn't look like they're being manufactured anymore, but they've actually gotten cheaper

http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Versus-Controller/dp/B0051MQJWU/
http://www.amazon.com/PS3-Versus-Controller-Playstation-3/dp/B0051MQK6K/

the triggers feel sort of clunky but they work well enough, and i really love the buttons and the directional stick. certainly lower quality construction than a hori pad, but they play fine.

Basically, yes. Kinda sad that all the "re-releases" of the model have been utter garbage. I can't imagine the manufacturing process is any more complicated than any other controller.

Also, wow: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-Sega-Saturn-USB-Champagne-Gold-Metallic-Controller-Pad-PC-PS3-MAC-NEW-/290952541150?pt=US_Video_Game_Controllers&hash=item43be1f73de

You know I actually got my DS4 to work with Dark Souls, until it stopped working. Back to the old 360.

Really should get a DS2 with USB adapter, that never failed.

There are two ways I have found so far to get games to think a Dualshock 4 is an xbox 360 controller.

This wrapper is a relatively straightforward, low-maintenance way to do it, based off the Scarlet.Crush Dualshock 3 wrapper (which is much less dodgy than motioninjoy - it doesn't connect to mystery servers in China, for a start).

The limitation of that method is that it will send button presses in BOTH DirectInput and Xinput. If a game listens for both weird things happen, so use x360ce (xbox 360 controller emulator) instead. This needs to be set up individually for each game, as it involves placing files it generates into the executable folder of the game.

Dark Souls works with x360ce. If you want to use dsfix as well you need to rename the dinput8.dll file x360ce makes to something else and put that filename in the dll chaining section of the dsfix.ini. Make sure it doesn't overwrite dsfix's dinput8.dll! That'll break things! (If you are using another fix like dscfix there is a dll chaining section in their .ini files as well, for e.g. chain dsfix > dscfix.dll > x360's dinput.dll)

I think the controller hardware is a big improvement on the dualshock 3. It is a lot more comfortable to hold and use, they have eliminated the spongy feeling from the triggers and the face buttons. I much prefer the stiffer sticks and they are in a more comfortable position as well. Disappointed by the lack of the official software support they seemed to have promised. They could also have put a micro usb cable into the package.

Do those have the mouse-click style face buttons? I can't remember if I tried one of those or something remarkably similar.

Yeah, all clicky all over. I really like the feel of the clicky buttons, but the d-pad/stick isn't perfect for (S)NES games. I payed $15 for mine, though, and at that price it's perfect.

Glad you like it!

I wish the Play SEGA controllers were better, and I expected them to be, given that they were sold by SEGA as an official product, but it wasn't to be. Mine broke after less than a day. I can only assume the same is true of the others that were distributed, given the reports I've heard.

Is there any reason you Saturn pad lovers don't just use a real pad with a USB converter?

Most people seem to be saying the newer Mayflash adapter is lag-free, though at least one YouTube commenter say it does.... Maybe hit-or-miss?

ebay is blocked here at work, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that a genuine Japanese saturn pad PLUS mayflash USB converter is more expensive than a USB saturn pad. probably a lot more expensive.

This isn't really true anymore. USB Saturn pads are currently running, at a minimum, $80-100 on the rare occasion you can actually find them on ebay, meanwhile, converters plus old Saturn pads will run you maybe $40 and are and were cheaper than buying USB Saturn Pads even when there were a lot of them.

I suspect the real reason is because people don't like having to keep track of both.

Saturn Converter
Saturn Controller

Just as an example.

Yeah. I'm guessing people just assume that any converter creates lag, despite the fact that stuff like eTokki's PS2-to-360 converter are Shoryuken approved.

And yeah: both are relatively cheap, and the kind of people who want a USB Saturn pad often own a regular Saturn pad.

If I grab one of these converters I'll report back to the camp, though I don't play a lot of emulated games and I'm happy with the stick I used on the 360, so it
might be later, rather than sooner.

I use the 360 and Mad Catz 6 Button pad for the majority of my games, even most of the games I play emulated. The reason I personally like the Saturn pad is because the pad itself is better than any pad I've used before or since. I'm indifferent towards the buttons. The buttons are ok, but nothing exceptional. I think the PS3 controller has the best buttons and a really good pad, but not as nicely rounded as the Saturn's.

I want to try the new Steam pad, because that thing looks exceptionally interesting from a "feel" perspective.

jumping into the mouse / kb discussion a bit late (very late), but

the zowie am mouse (now sold by monoprice as the mp-am) has an amazing sensor and basically feels like the 1.1a intellimouse and doesn't have stupid sensitivity settings. it also doesn't correct your shit.

wtf wow. I remember a few years back Saturn USB pads were like 2/$25 from Hong Kong. They might've been the "knockoff" ones (which were probably of good quality), but still.

when gamers like a controller, we will pay through the nose for it. i'm honestly surprised someone out there doesn't just keep churning out controllers just like how some makers will churn out a mouse / keyboard for decades.

though i would buy retrousb stuff if they were half the price they are listed for. they are always sold out so others must just really like the SNES controller.

for 3 years i've been trying to find a couple of Innovation ps2-->DC converters. i've found it only once and they wanted 80 for it, i scoffed! i just want to use HRAP2s on everything!
