I played through Catherine for the first time this weekend. It took me about fourteen hours, and I got the True Lover ending. Great game. The only thing that bothered me was the lack of a score-attack mode for the Golden Playhouse levels after you beat the game, unless I missed something? It would be fun to be able to play them divorced from the story mode.

well there is the babel mode which isn't the same as the main game, but it is still fun if you like the gameplay. i did like the gameplay, even though i pretty much hated every aspect of the narrative.

Yeah, but you need to get gold trophies in Normal to unlock stages in Babel mode, and I beat it on Easy...anyway, that should give me something to aim for next, besides additional endings. Thanks! I actually liked the narrative, even if the writing was shaky at various points.

Creeping and flying around the city in Arkham City is fun. Playing as the extra characters in the challenge maps is fun. I wish that instead of having this big long epic Batman story with every Batman villain ever, the game would have been set up as just an open world game where you could play as any of the characters and engaged in shorter missions. It's something I want to talk about if we ever do a licensed games podcast

Worked my way through Brütal Legend for the first time today. Even though it has its fair share of issues, it is just so undeniably metal that I can really forgive most of it.

Tried out the Prologus thing for Dissidia 2 and I'm actually surprised by how fun it can be. Lots of frustrating moments when the game seems to just refuse to do what you want but it can all be alleviated by unwinding with a few rounds of Kefka fireball spam (which the AI seems so incapable of handling) and all frustration will just flow away.

Why is the font in this game on the 3DS so terrible? It's fuzzy and hard on the eyes. Capital 'I's are cut in half vertically unless you set the 3D slider to half-way. Yes, I mean they are cut off even if the 3D is disabled. Really horrible stuff here. I also find the writing and humor to be too anachronistic. It's really taking me out of the experience, especially with the jokes not being very funny despite the game trying with all its might to keep throwing 'em in there as much as possible.

I thought it started out full of spunk, but got stale about halfway through. that's the problem with plots/settings that try to trade on their ridiculousness - you have to keep upping the ante or it wears off

also yeah fuck unlocking shit

This is basically my bottom line. Well, actually I'm going to expand on it. First, you have to unlock the ability to listen to music. Then, music only plays through your car. Throughout the game, you never spend more than 2 minutes in your car except for maybe one mission. On top of that, in the multiplayer, before the first patch, music only played from your base which you spent about 0 time at. It was pretty :|

I had a good time redoing Golden Playhouse on Hard. It really is quite hard then.

Babel I don't like as much. It's really brutal and you'll usually die in <2 minutes, even on the most basic Babel stage. But that's not the real problem, it's that the main skill in it is to set things up so that your heap doesn't degenerate into unrecoverable chaos when random block patterns fall from the sky. The puzzle skills you develop in the rest of the game don't come into it much, and it's too arbitrary to be satisfying.

In a particularly apathetic moment of my life, I'm half playing the AAA titles that PSN + gives to me.

Sleeping Dogs was nice for a few hours, but everything that wasn't grappling was boring.

DOA5: well probably doesn't really count as a AAA title. Uncertain about what to do with it (easy joke here), don't feel like learning a new fighter for a series I don't care for that probably nobody plays etc. So I just play around with the story mode, sorta mashing buttons. It's interesting to see VF Sarah in this, she really makes the other girls look bad. She's still a legitimate supermodel but she has the strong, athletic body that make her kicking your ass absolutely plausible and likely, while the other girls have this glamorous samey build.

Mass Effect 3: I don't like cover shooters or Bioware, but I'll eat any scifi game I guess. This is so well done, I'm impressed by the production values, now I can be a little tiny bit more tolerant when people goes 'lol ps2 grafix' about my favourite games. Some story bits seem interesting, I had to operate a couple of rather drastic decisions, not sure about the long term influence. The design is mortally boring when you come from playing Anarchy Reigns. But yeah very nice.

And then I still play a ton of Anarchy Reigns. It's heartbreaking to not see this game topping the charts, being the next big thing. Because it totally could have.

If they're all worse than Brutal Legend then I am happy I haven't played any of them. I did support their game bundle, though...

Btw, Rudie, you mind writing a little thoughts about what you liked in Brutal Legend?

Enjoyed Jack Black's tone even if I didn't lol at a lot of the jokes. Everywhere was cool to look at. I didn't feel like it wasted an environment on being boring. I'm not heavily invested into metal music/culture so I enjoyed it from the sidelines. Everything was wrapped up in about 12 hours. The RTS sections didn't make me go crazy with stress. They weren't that fun. It was a cool world.

I thought psychonauts was horrible to play and I'm probably the board's biggest 3D mascot platformer fan. I sat through it stone faced once and a few years later tried it again and gave up about 5 hours in because I hated every second I was playing it. It wasn't conductive to my off time.

So Maybe. Just maybe my at the time conditions contributed to my opinion on the games.

Psychonauts is both an incredible adventure game and a terrible platformer all at once. i wish there was more emphasis on the former than the latter within the thing itself. Whispering Rocks has got to be one of the finest overworlds ever produced, though.

it's one of those games i'm not sure i'll ever play again, because i don't want reality to spoil the fond memories i have of it.

There are tons of collectibles in Psychonauts, yeah. I'd say most of them are like coins in a SMB game. I recall having to collect whatever the in game currency is to purchase some item that allowed me to continue my progress being lame.

The platforming, while not great, isn't so bad that I wouldn't recommend people try the game. I would place it among other platformers of the time.

Finished 100%ing GTA IV a few weeks back and now I'm waiting for Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories (and a component cable for PS2 why have I not been playing PS2 through component yet) to arrive in the mail sometime in the next week or so.

In the meantime I'm just kind of dabbling in a little of this and a little of that with a regular helping of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night on XBLA. I found out that if your internet connection drops out while you're playing then the Xbox will revert to recognizing the game as a free trial and you can't save. Found that out the other day when the wireless connection I'm running the 360 on got spotty for a minute and dropped out.

I don't know if it was Digital Eclipse's doing (they did the SotN port) or something that Microshit does as standard operating procedure for all their XBLA games (you can't even play XBLIG games without being connected, for instance) but I saw the future of the next-next gen consoles and it's just as shit and anti-consumer as it looks like.

I believe that's a "feature" which happens if you originally bought the game on a different 360 console.

Yeah you have to go through some complicated process through the Microsoft website and your console to relicense the game for your new system

Augh what bs. I did buy it on a different console but the disc drive stopped working properly so I eventually got this new one a couple years ago. I thought getting my profile transferred to the new console was all I needed to do but apparently not! Guess I'll look into this further.

Eh, I don't think is that complicated anymore? I mean, you to individually redownload the licenses for each game you bought, but m pretty sure you can just do it thru the 360 itself. Unless I'm remembering wrong.

I started Gears of War: Judgment last night and I forgot that they put Baird in the lead role. I don't want to be Baird. Who does?

Hear tell they've pissed around a bit with the new one - no stopping power for weapons, no down-but-not-out status, no Locust skins/models in regular i.e. not Horde/Onslaught multi... I'm not rushing to get back into it
