Died from heart failure at 42.

A true renaissance man who had just gotten back into games.

Here's a great feature on him: http://www.1up.com/features/kenji-eno-breaks-silence

And an excellent podcast by our own Booji and Rudie: http://hingeproblems.com/2012/11/30/episode-7-happened/

kenji eno is the epitome of an era of gaming that is simply over, that will never come back. in another world japanese development would have found its stable niche in the intensely off-center, genuinely evocative kind of experimentation that naturally came to him. it was never much of a wonder that he left gaming. it would have been nice if he could have been more active on the dreamcast. the aura around it was basically made for him.

Whoa, I was just thinking about how I need to give some of his games a try and was wondering what he was doing now. I sorta knew he wasn't active in games anymore, but I was hoping he was or was mounting a come back.

Even though I never got a chance to experience his work in its proper time frame, I always felt it was very important that he was there and doing things. Sad to hear he's gone.

Oh shit dammit. This might be the first game-maker dying that actually depresses me a bit.

Man, I don't even know what to say.

From deep within my heart, I hope that he may rest in peace.

japanese people doing things properly …

I kinda expected this thread to be some "oh no eno goes social"-drama, but my expectations were, unfortunately, not met. Way too early to bow out, a shame.

Always alarming to hear about people dying young, no matter their occupation. I'd always intended to try more of Eno's games, but the only one I ever got around to was One-Dot Enemies. I think I'll try to get/play the Newtonica games and You, Me & The Cubes (the only other games of his on platforms readily available to me) in his honor.

Reading about Eno's career, he truly sounds like the original Rockstar Game Developer. RIP.

So I don't want to waste my time looking back on something I did in the past. But if I get into a really critical situation where I'm forced to do that in order to make a living, I might do that. But until a critical situation comes up, I'm not interested in looking back. Life is short! There's no time to look back!

So, reading that giant 1Up interview and getting to the part about donating 1000 Saturns to blind people and basically telling Sony to fuck themselves at their own press conference, and I believe I can safely say that this dude was Fucking Awesome. I will never again watch a Sony presser without praying for someone to honor his legacy.

I don't think I've ever before (knowingly) looked at the Twitter feed or other online presence of a dead person. Searching for "Kenji Eno" on Twitter, you get a swarm of people commenting on his death within the last 24 hours... only for that to peter out some ways down the page, and then the mentions prior to that are all Eno's own tweets, from just four days ago.

Four days. I guess eventually that will fade into a vaguer notation of "1 week ago" (does Twitter do that?) and then finally just a date, where it'll stay I guess for as long as Twitter's around.

I don't really know quite how to express the simultaneous sense of eeriness and sadness that this observation evokes in me. So I guess I'll just leave it there as-is.

i never played his games, but i found them fascinating to read about & it makes me sad that he died, especially so young. he was clearly a talented man and he'll be missed dearly.

It's especially upsetting because Eno wasn't some invisible figure or something (like say, Miyamoto), I checked his twitter every couple of weeks and he always had cool things to say/share, I was on it days before he died. Just last week on IRC we were talking about D2, so it was really unexpected.

The fact that, once upon a time, E3 was a place where game developers could just go and jam to sega tunes is even more depressing.
I think Eno was a significant part of the '90s game scene, and now that he is gone a little part of that moment is as well.

can this be the posthumous kenji eno appreciation thread? the lost levels has a great article on one early game of his, the unreleased Sunman for NES, which was likely intended to be a vehicle for the Superman license:
