I love that he is embarrassing the other guy by just saying what the game is doing, to the point where they tell him to knock it off.
and then she gets impaled and Conan loses his shit.
this seems like as much of a review as this game deserves. |

wow
honestly, for a moment, i had considered checking out the new Tomb Raider based on the suggestion of a friend, but...that looks incredibly, incredibly unappealing. |

I have to say I really like the Conan O'Brien game reviews, he actually reacts to them like a sensible human being who hasn't been exposed to this crap for the past 20-odd years
seriously, though, as someone who has occasionally throughout his life consumed pornography in which the female character(s) could be said to not be totally enjoying themselves, that Tomb Raider violent torture porn is incredibly disturbing. most pornography is designed to be less visceral than the reality; this is the opposite. |

Beyond the troublesome leering and torturey aspects of it, at least that first area looks like Heavy Rain the point and click adventure with Final Fantasy VII's snowboarding minigame. _________________

hey people, it's still a, you know, game.
I (fondly) remember the press being up in arms before the GTAIV release, discussing if the xtreme violence of the game would mean the end of humanity™ et al, and … well, it seems we're still alive and kicking. I guess that the same will apply even after it hit the shelves ... maybe I'm too lazy to be bothered by this? _________________

I have no problem with extreme violence per se (plus, if you don't mind my saying so, I know you live in Germany and are probably fed up with the censorship laws and might thus be inclined to push farther in favour of free speech in this area than I might), but it's really a tonal issue. Comparing this to Grand Theft Auto or Uncharted should be the entire point of the argument. I remember when we were talking about SotC near the time of its release and someone got into an argument with Dess about how Ueda's storybook narratives involve classically male archetypes because if you're going to change that story you need to focus a great deal of narrative attention on that change, which means you may not get the clean, genre-style approach you're aiming for.
This would be an example of really really really poor focus on having a female protagonist in an AAA cover shooter. |

I dunno, there seems to be something genuinely malicious about Tomb Raider's game's design. I can't picture it being healthy to enjoy something like this, even ironically. But, let's make it worse! http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-360/tomb-raider

| So this new Tombe Raider is basically just Uncharted then? Does it have anything unique going for it except for a bow? Wasn't it supposed to have survival ascpects or something? Because I was really hoping for something Snake Eater like there. |

Yeah, I mean, I'm never going to play the game because it's too violent (take note), but it seems that a large part of the combat is stealth based. I mean, now you're murdering people that not only never did anything to you, but aren't even expecting that they may be murdered. They just took a job with a dodgy contractor. Maybe if you actually threatened them they might have given up, but no, you slaughter them without them ever really realizing they were in danger.
I dunno, maybe my objection stems from playing abstractly violent games as a child and being able to maintain some distance from the objectionable act that is no longer possible. |

I'm sorry, but no modern console game is going to have as many undeserved deaths as the original Prince of Persia.

eurogamer's review basically says that all the puzzles are optional, which should not have surprised me in the slightest but still managed to.
I think it's at least more open than Uncharted, but the combat and all the set pieces and the out of place hyper murder, yeah, that's Uncharted. oh and it starts out with like a two hour porn-'n-torture QTE string |

as far as I can tell, nearly every bit of the original leaked idea for a reboot has been stripped out/replaced except that 1) it takes place on an island and 2) you shouldn't let Lara die
It really is one of the most unpleasant things to happen this generation. :( |

I saw a documentary on the team that made Tomb Raider up to I believe the fourth game, and a full five-ten minutes is spent interviewing the guy who apparently sat in a cubicle and thought up ways to kill Lara.
Wonder if it's the same guy. _________________ HeavyViper@Twitter ~~~ HeavyViper@Soundcloud

It would be fun if you would pretend that someone else had written that exact thing, and now you're going to post an indignant riposte!

I don't really think I can play this game. Seeing that sort of stuff makes me physically nauseous. Probably has something to do with my phobia of needles. _________________

Seeing as how I'm the closest thing SB has to a Tomb Raider Defense Force I feel like I should play this game to have a more educated view on what and where things go wrong, but I have neither the financial desire nor ability to purchase a copy. It feels like there's something different about this aside from the asset railroads and the combat corridors, but I still can't put my finger on it. _________________

It's unfortunate this is called Tomb Raider because when I think of Tomb Raider I think of overcoming challenging spaces in interesting places, not Uncharted-style murder-simming. Because a new Uncharted-type game might be neat if you're into that type of game but man, Tomb Raider used to mean exploring a place and figuring out how to get from point A to B without getting eaten by wild animals or impaled on spikes.
And I guess this new one is ostensibly about that as well but everything they've shown of it so far indicates it's really not. Which is kind of depressing but oh well there are still those four original games that were about that so I can always just reinstall those instead.
Tomb Raider Anniversary was pretty good. Haven't played Legend beyond the demo, I might check it out at some point. I guess there's Underworld as well, in the same vein, but I never heard much about how well that did. _________________
