For rifles starting out you can get Braton, Burston, or Latron easily but I would recommend skipping Burston. Gorgon is a minigun style rifle with insane rate of fire and ammo consumption but requires a higher mastery rank. Grakata is useless unless heavily modded. Boltor innately ignores armor but does less damage and is available earlier.

The Strun is a good shotgun all around but kind of in the middle of the other shotguns, with a wide cone of fire and decent sized magazine. Boar does less damage per shot but fires quickly and has a huge magazine. Hek has only 4 shots but does massive damage and has a tight cone of fire... but requires an even higher rank than Gorgon. No idea how Sobek is, but apparently it has similar accuracy to Hek but is fully automatic.

Sidearms are more varied, I've only messed with Lato/Vandal, Lex, Viper/Twin Vipers, and Sicarus. Avoid Sicarus for the same reason as Burston, namely that burst fire is hard to control and sucks unless all three shots hit the same target. Lato/Lato Vandal is a good all-around pistol, and dual Latos is strong if you want to John Woo it up. Lex seems really good for long distance shooting but I haven't fully modded mine yet. Twin Vipers tear up close range if you want to primarily use a long range rifle. Bolto/Akbolto is supposedly the best for damage due to innate armor ignore.

Orthos is a fun heavy melee weapon, Dual Ether is fast and slashy, and Dark Sword is killer for pure single target assassination.

Would anyone be interested in starting a group game(tm) anytime soon? My experience with Warframe thus far has really been exclusively with about one additional person, and I know the game is meant to be played with a few people.

FYI for lapsed Warframe players: There are some fun special battles going on right now. You get to pick a side (Corpus/Grineer) (per map) and fight alongside them against the other for nice prizes. Also there's a Halloween colour set in the shop that only costs one credit.

Wow hey another huge update, this time the UI and damage system have been overhauled! They're actually starting to make the game less obtuse and more balanced.
