this thread is getting silly

the internet is giving MS grief because they came up with stupid shit, then because MS realized they wanted to make money and stopped doing all the stuff they realized they couldn't get away with. Sony had its turn as the whipping post (the hubris of Ken Kutaragi circa PS3 reveal/launch is still several leagues worse than what MS pulled round/during E3).

I'm glad that they see that some of the shit they were gonna pull was dumb and that they're going past expectations with stuff like the devkit capability because blah blah blah competition etc., especially with Nintendo deciding they want to be a non-entity in the console race atm. the less bullshit tacked onto the system, the more games will come, and a big library is a healthy library (I hope).

still keeping that PS4 pre-order though, sometimes you gotta smack a dog on the nose til he understands

(guess what, I am no friend of cloud-storage! But then I'm from a country that asks the NSA for 2nd hand data after they gave them free access, so …… kind of a theme going on here, yup. Still, I don't see what was so excellent about doing away with memory card+game you could take with you when visiting a friend. Never needed amazing online-friend systems for that.)

Yeah, I actually own a 360 memory card from before they opened the USB compatability. I am still pissed at my ps3 for eating all of my saves.

I think the one benefit of PS3's super encrypted/DRM'd game saves is that the saves aren't super hackable like they are on 360.

God that reminds me: the reason why developing on Xbox sucks is because you have to support all those memory options even now and test for all sorts of dumb cases like if someone installs the entire game on to the card somehow and then pulls it out while it's loading. Urghhhhh.

Well, for what it's worth they didn't actually remove the functionality. You can't buy new memory cards (nor would you really want to), but the ones you own still work as fine as they ever did.

I am so very happy to report that the Xbone is, in fact, Xbox huge. it is almost exactly the same shape and size as the OG Xbox

now just cut the price and throw in a copy of Crimson Dragon and I'll jump in

I will try not to read into this that microsoft has abandoned any dubious cross-cultural aspirations they once had for hardware design and instead assume that they're just dgafing what with the whole x86 thing and throwing a standard mITX board in there just like my computer.

there's a Die shot floating around the internet, that is supposedly from the Xbone. It has a section with a large amount of transistors unaccounted for.

IF it actually is a real Die shot from the actual Xbone that is in production and due to ship: the size of this Die section suggests another graphics chip.


I'm not buying it, the speculation. But it's out there.

I've also read that, of the launch titles, only Forza is native 1080p (Ryse is confirmed 1600x900 upscaled, KI has been noted as 720p in development, DR3 only just got locked 30 fps so no one knows what res it'll run and there's rumors that BF4 is going to be 720p/60fps), which sort of flies counter to the presence of untapped power waiting to be unleashed

1080p (Full HD is a terrible term and I hope it dies) is totally down to developer desire, seeing as many upcoming Wii U titles are going to be 1080p60. there's also the whole Microsoft engineers purposely not targeting the highest specs (which, if what has been said about Kinect 2.0's cost is true, is to keep the price down). the PS4 is going to have more titles at 1080p at launch, but that really doesn't mean much, since a lot of the lower-res titles on either platform are going to be multiplats/ports, wherein the issue is the performance/IQ tightrope walk.

oh, and it's not that much power, the new consoles are still pretty meh in comparison to the last couple generations of GPUs in the PC space

I've been sitting at the 1080p threshold for the past 5-6 years on PC. it's not that big a deal. higher framerates are sexier.
