I gotta imagine following Taro's thoughts must be a nightmare. Even the article becomes convoluted. _________________

I saw a stream of the JP version and it was quickly relegated to "when it's cheap" |

| bought cautiously today, plan on at least reading the manual on the toilet first. I know nothing about the manual but it seems like one that needs to have a toilet/bathroom experience. I expect the art to be good, and crossing my fingers for color. |

update: what the hell was i thinking? there is indeed no such thing as a manual anymore. i blew it..
but yea, interesting thoughts on the game. It's nice to for a gamer creator to have a very broad, complicated concern and not be able to use his game to hash it out. We know guys like Kojima and Levine have concerns and definite themes they hammer home but they're so clumsily done that it's hard to take seriously. Especially when Levine goes on record making fun of "frat boys" who don't like his stupid, overwrought bullshit. So yes, I'd rather have dick knights than a giant robot bird... |

At first I found the contrast between that interview and my experience cr with drakengard 3 (so far) a bit jarring. For someone that seems interested in breaking past the barrier of violent combat games, this is a game very much about and filled with almost comically gratuitous violence. It manages to feel upsetting pretty much constantly as the characters communicate a frightening callousness in regards to death and killing. This is done not only in scenes, but while you're in the act of murdering hordes of soldiers as the basic core gameplay element. It's not glorious, it's not awesome, it's just dark. Then I realized that that's the point. It's not doing anything mechanic wise that a million other games haven't done. You're running around killing a billion dudes. It just uses a different perspective that makes you feel less than good about your actions. When I best the first boss the cutscene straight up upset me. I can't sympathize with my protagonist. I can't justify the horrible acts of cruelty. I'm not saying this a new concept, but I find the execution more impactful than in, say, hotline Miami... Because hotline miami genuinely just felt awesome and good all the time and I never really got feel-bad vibes about what if done or whatever everyone said was so great about it. I just loved the fast paced addictive gameplay, aesthetic, and music - as well as to some extent the story.
Anyways the game is kind if corny and over the top / heavy handed with this theme. It also looks probably worse than I was prepared for, and it doesn't necessarily control or feel all that great. I'd like to remap the combat to the shoulder buttons because this really calls for some pretty intense clawing. All in all I'm enjoying it, though.

I don't think the point of Hotline Miami was to make violence feel gross or anything. The game makes the player feel downright powerful when he clears a room flawlessly, I think reviewers/critics just didn't want to admit bold-faced that they enjoyed the game's violence and had to ascribe a deeper meaning to it.
Mostly what I've seen about Drakengard 3 so far is that people are upset/surprised it dropped the direction Nier seemed to be going with and went for a straight up hack and slash game. I think this is because the game is defined by how Zero interacts with the world, and the only way she knows how to interact with anything is through violence. She's not a parent, or a sister, just a murderer. _________________

it's not like at least the first one was exactly that - a straight up hack and slash game. And since this is what I expected from it, I guess that I might buy it soon. I'm still on the fence whether I should import the US disc-version, because I'd rather have a disc than a download … _________________

You can pay 1.99 for the Japanese Voices, if that's your thing, but I think the voicework in this game is pretty decent.
All of the villains look like magical girls....i wonder if that's intentional _________________

They don't really seem like villains tho :(
I liked the part in the interview where he said that having a cast full of women was just the only idea left after all the other ideas were rejected... Almost as great as expressing how inspired he was by 9/11. |

I'm not sure why being inspired by 9/11 is a bad thing...?
Tragedy isn't an unusual source of inspiration for creative types, and you really have to look at the influence an event specifically had on a work before you can say whether the final product is in good taste or not. I think Yoko gave a satisfactory explanation for how he was specifically inspired. Nier isn't about killing things because 9/11 was awesome, it's about how people will do messed up things to one another when they believe they're right (because 9/11 was terrible). |

| Nah, in that interview he explained away the initial shock I had a whole back when I heard, out of context, that he was inspired by 9/11 - which struck as odd at the time. |

hm, I don't care whether it is dubbed - actually, yes, I <do> care, but rather if they manage to capture the feeling of the first one,

and the B-movie feeling. If they have a goodish cast, that's fine with me as well. But please give me a disk … _________________

There's a lot of constant banter that goes back and forth between highlighting that most of the characters are absolute psychopaths and being juvenile sex humor.
Interesting though, I don't think any of the characters ever to use sex as a weapon, and none of the few male characters ever threaten the lead in a sexual way from what I've seen. _________________

Ugh the dialogue is almost more cringeworthy than Bayonetta. But like Bayonetta, this is one hell of a VideoGame™ _________________

| I don't know. Lol. I seriously have no idea if this is a good game or a shit game. The more I play it, the more I like playing it, though. It definitely gets better after you clear a significant portion of the game... Haha. |

The humor is throwing me off. Like, straight up dick jokes. I'm finding the lack of subtlety weird in comparison to the first game, which wasn't funny at all and tackled several taboo topics but didn't really put them out there.
I find it charming that it looks like a PS2 game from 10 years ago, though, and I'm still enjoying it after spending way too much time with the polished-beyond-sterility Infamous: Second Son. |

| Everything in the chests is worthwhile. And yes, there are weapons. Also base materials for upgrading weapons, and large sums of money. |

Care to insert in spoiler tags what fight you're referring to?
Side note: fuck the (true) final boss.
As much as I know this isn't Nier, fuck it made me miss Nier. It has the music and the tragic vibes but Nier is much more compelling from both a writing and a gameplay perspective. |
