|
|
There's been some interest in playing Terraria again (or for the first time) in the Steam sale thread, so I went ahead and set up a new server that we can use, with a new world (large this time).
We have six simultaneous slots at the moment, but that can be increased if it ends up not being enough. I didn't bother putting a password on the game this time, so even unregistered lurkers can join in.
The address is 66.223.16.137
The port is 9777
Updated October 1, 2013 with new server details. New world generated for the 1.2 update.
Here's the old Terraria thread from 2011:

| Out of curiosity is everyone doing softcore? Part of me wants to try this on Hardcore so I can quit in a rage when I accidentally miss with the hook and plummet to my death. |

| Oh, I didn't realize that this game was just about to be updated. Do existing worlds get the new content when there's an update, or only new ones? |

| I know they are adding biomes and such, so I will bet it is only new ones, but that is just a guess. |

Yeah there are new biomes and map generation in the update but there's no concrete date for it yet _________________

Okay, I guess we'll want to start a new world then, if that's the only way to get the new features. If that's the case, I'll zip up and post this world we started the other day.
Alternatively, we could pull in the new environments, unless they are special ones like the dungeon. |

Just wanted to say thanks for setting this up, i have been on several times the last few days but havent seen anyone else yet.
I never played Terraria before, its surprisingly fun just digging downwards for 30 minutes before doing something else. i have no idea if theres a goal or anything, i barely know what i'm doing.. i should probably jump down one of those shafts and see what is going on there... |

I'll probably play this with you guys when this update happens! I haven't played it since the game first came out, there's tons of stuff I haven't seen yet. _________________ I'm on Steam! ----- I'm on Youtube!

As much as I played this game back when it was new, I still find it fun to just dig and explore aimlessly.
Too bad there isn't a release date on the update. I don't want to go to the effort of building elaborate things in this world if there's a good chance we might want to reset it soon.
Does anyone know why some random spots are "protected from change?" Are they player spawn points or something? |

It looks like the official word is that the Terraria update is coming in October (or at least no sooner than that). This world has not had much activity lately, so unless there are any objections I may let the server expire until the update. I'll keep a copy of the world, though.
I believe it has about two weeks left before coming up for renewal. |

The update finally has a date! October 1st. A bit longer than Redigit originally estimated (summer) but it sounds like he ended up adding a ton more stuff than he originally planned for. _________________

I played with the new version a few minutes last night. There are some nice improvements, such as the ability to run over uneven ground.
I'll generate a new always-on world as soon as the host I normally go with is ready to handle the new version. They say they're working on it now. |

Yeah I spent a little over an hour playing so far and I've found a few new ores, enemies, and general stuff like slopes/half blocks/new biomes. The ingame map is so helpful, no longer do you need a third party spoiler-showing utility to figure out where that cave you died in is! _________________

Steam is acting really weird today for me. Can't install games. Barely let me log in to begin with, took about thirty tries over the course of an hour before it did.
I tried switching to my huge terrabyte drive to see if that fixed anything and it says that I have 0mb available on the big drive. What the fuck? _________________

Okay, the new server is up. I've updated the top post with details.
I'm tempted to say that those of us who have played before should start new characters, but the first steps would be a little tedious to go through again (though I didn't mind that the first time I played, when each new upgrade was a big help). Plus, that means leaving certain things for those who have never played before, which is probably a considerate thing to do.
I'm mostly interested in exploring and building, but I never saw any of the new adventure-oriented elements of the last update, let alone this one. |

I'm in the same boat as you and I plan to start from scratch. If Steam ever manages to get its shit together. Actually, I'll probably have to the way this process is going.
I might need to wipe and reinstall windows. Maybe get a new C drive, even. _________________

I started a new character but gave them some stuff like a Fairy and hook because movement + light are the parts that slow you down the most early on. Brain of Cthulhu is pretty fun but total jokes with the new early magic weapons, not sure if that's intended.
Exploring the server last night I found a giant locked underground jungle temple/ziggurat thing and I'm just dying to know what's inside. The chest at the entrance held a... power cell. Hm. _________________

Arg!
Uninstalled Steam, reinstalled it, was able to download Terraria successfuly, but then I got this:
Uninstalled XNA, reinstalled XNA, uninstalled .NET framework, reinstalled .NET framework.
I'm still getting the error message. Any ideas? _________________

I've got full meteor armor now with topaz staff and crimson rod as my spells. It'd make things TOO easy if I just threw on my old hallowed stuff :P _________________

I had the day to spend on the server, so I'm at full Molten gear. I also started off the NPC tenement area and left a couple extra accessories there. Think we are up to the Demolitionist. Also have a near complete Hellevator as part of the place I'm set up, if people want to use. Just be careful, there's one spot with no water yet shortly after the first lava/water stop.
Also stole the battery in the Jungle ruins chest. :V
Word of caution if you're trying to fight Eater of Worlds the lag resets its position pretty much every single time you hit its head. This is good since it means you know where it's coming every single time, but bad as the drops are going to be his initial position. Bring lots of explosives if you can't mine ebonstone.
Some pretty sweet Yggdrasil like trees out there. And a lot of decorative things just strewn in all the biomes. |

| I think that it is pretty great that cactus furniture can now be made. Since I started from scratch, I need to find some iron so I can make a grappling hook. |

You can make hooks with gems now actually, I ended up with an Emerald hook on my own world. Pretty sure they require 15 or so. _________________

Yeah, each flavour of gem hook is 15. And if you've got a good eye in the Snow and Ice biome you can find gems studding the walls of caves there instead of passing them by because their tell is so slight when embedded in stone walls.
Also, use the NPC guide to find out what accessories can be combined together to make them better. Speaking of, I really want a sandstorm in a bottle. It'd complete my bottle set and they can be combined with a balloon for even greater multiple jumps. |

Yeah that big jungle dungeon... I think it's a hardmode thing as nobody has found a key for it yet. I'd rather wait until everyone wants to activate hardmode to do it though!
Got my jungle armor set, ready to cast spells as my primary damage source finally. Never really messed with magic before so this is pretty new.
Update: Just found an Extractinator on the server, check it out if you have slush/silt lying around. |

It's one of a kind ((per world) I think!), probably best served at the NPC site in like an easily accessible shrine.
Your hobo shack would probably serve pretty well in that regard. :V |

Unfortunately, it looks like we lost some of our progress last night. This is especially unfortunate because several of use had been working on nice building projects during that time. I think it might be because I reset the server, which I did because things seemed to be kind of frozen (night forever, NPCs not moving, etc.).
Because a Terraria server supposedly saves every 24 minutes, I waited much longer than that to restart it. But on researching a little, it seems that it's every 24 minutes at dawn. Which I'm guessing is our problem, since the dawn never seemed to come.
Anyway, sorry about the setback, especially if it really was preventable. If anyone knows anything about such issues and how to prevent them, please let me know.

Yeah, I think yours is the biggest loss. If you do decide to re-finish your structure, let me know and I can help. I have some crimson stuff I'm not using from a single-player world I created. |

Oh I'd like to rebuild it I just really don't want to have to mine all that crimstone again. I might see if the inventory editor has been updated to 1.2 just for that. _________________

It appears that we're once again stuck in an endless night with no moon or stars, with all NPCs frozen in place (though still responsive). I don't want to restart the server again if there's some other way to fix the problem.
The only solution I see on the Web is to exit the world and re-enter, but that doesn't seem to make a difference when it's a server world. |

Okay, the tech support response I got was that I should try Tshock instead of Terraria server. However, if the world isn't saving properly, we'll risk losing some progress again if I do that. I suppose it's better to lose some now than more later, though.
Edit: I went ahead and made the switch. I hope nothing additional was lost in the transition, but it seems a lot more stable now. I noticed a few improvements right away:
- You can see a message when the world is saving, removing the mystery.
- Monsters now seem to spawn properly, and they don't keep teleporting back to their starting positions when you hit them.
- The transition between day and night is gradual now, instead of sudden (or not at all).
- The banner in the top post of this thread now shows how many players are in the world at any given time.

If this was a couple months ago, then yes, that world still exists. However, the one that's active right now is new (so that we can see the new content).
