it's either extremely cynical or extremely naive
I mean, it seems earnest enough to me, and it also seems to rip a lot from wind waker stylistically. I don't mind the overt ico rips. it's more the complete absence of anything remotely original that bothers me.
kinda reminds me of ubisoft in the mid 2000s actually... _________________

I dunno I'm just going to say that the fog at the end of this trailer beats the snot out of the fog in not just Ico/SotC but nearly any game. Maybe it's just that the art style goes really well with it though it does that either way. So far this game is looking Fog of the Year worthy.
Guess it's kind of early to be leery yet. It doesn't look like it has any original ideas but I'm going to need to see some more trailers and some gameplay before deciding the game doesn't have its own identity. But it does have some really nice fog. _________________

The conventional nomenclature would be rip-off, which is indeed a bad thing. |
I don't mind More Ico. Given that the game is all about quiet beauty anyway, all it really needs to be is quiet, and beautiful. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

| Looks real neat. I care 0% about whether this videogame will bring any new videogame ideas to the table. |

Perhaps ps4 has hyper advanced volumetric fog math.

I do because 'predictable' and exploration dont go together well. _________________ Mixtapes galore ~ VG MUSIC

Also a little slightly undeservedly disappointed that this admittedly incomplete initial teaser footage of this pretty game on a next-gen hyper system doesn't seem to run anywhere near 60fps?
I don't know. That's kindof important to me. |

Surprised nobody's mentioned yet that this is by Tequila Works, the company that made Deadlight.
What did we think of Deadlight? _________________

This is going to sound tasteless but looking at that trailer I kept thinking how this game would be totally better with a lightning halberd on top of that mountain and gloves of necromancy hidden under a waterfall and monsters everywhere.
It's hard to care about a roam-antic wanting to give a very similar experience to other games I've already played.
We might reach roam-antic oversaturation fast (but hey the witness still looks interesting) |

It's hard to parse, isn't it? My reaction is pretty negative, but why?
I think that ICO and SotC were kind of design showcases. The really showed something that nobody had tried to do with the PS2 before (procedural animation in the case of ICO and collision detection with deforming models in the case of SotC.) The types of games they ended up becoming seemed to be a result of those design decisions, and to copy those mechanics seems, yeah, pretty cynical.
Wind Waker had a great aesthetic. By all means, copy that, but ICO's mechanics? Well... |

I guess it works but I don't think cynical is the word I would've used for that
Cynical would be me saying that Ico is just Tomb Raider with streamlined mechanics and only about 1/4th of the beef and thrills, but instead of saying that I'll simply state that I'm very glad we're getting a new Tomb Raider. Ico was a really good Tomb Raider but not as good as Prince of Persia: Sands of Time |

Okay, ICO/SotC are not good because of "procedural modular deformation" or any of that, except insofar as those things contribute to a coherent and unique aesthetic. That's the reason those games are interesting. There are plenty of tech demos more impressive than ICO that we know nothing about because they don't do anything interesting with the technology.

It's cynical because they know they can make an unoriginal game if reminds people of an original one. It's a disneyfied ICO, ffs. _________________

I'd call that opportunism first and foremost
I also agree that Ueda games are good because they're big/solemn/contemplative and not because of the mechanical innovations that made them fun and fresh to play |
