Now that I've come across two of these, I guess I can categorize them. These are both free, both available for Windows and Mac, and both worth your time.

I already mentioned this one a while back in the big indie games thread, but here it is again. This game is not very long, though you might be a little aimless at times until you figure out what to do. At one point I thought that I had done something to break the game, but that just led me to another area for a while.
Here's a hint regarding what to do in this game: Try to enter the little phone booth-looking things.

This one starts out in a command line OS. I really don't know how you are supposed to figure out what to do there, but maybe I just didn't give it enough time before I looked up the solution.
The solution (with spoiler tags):
1. remote
2. voidscan
3. dive
Other commands work as well, such as DIR.
Here's a hint for this game, in case you need it: Find the right angle to face the various clusters. |

I opened it again just now to see what I might have missed, and now I understand why I had a problem. I tried DIR right away and it said unknown command. But if I immediately enter DIR again, it works. Would have been obvious had it worked the first time.
In fact, it appears that the first command I enter always fails, no matter what it is.
(It's not a question of age--I was raised on C64 and DOS.) |

This is pretty nice, even if there's not much to it. My computer had a hard time with it in places, which reminded me of when I used to design custom Wolfenstein 3D maps and had to be careful not to let the player see too far to avoid freezing.
