Big Boss is both vexed and entranced with the sniper Quiet, the newest recruit to the Diamond Dogs. Thoroughly mute but unshakably loyal, she follows every order perfectly and seems to constantly stalk him across the battlefield, helping him out when he needs it most. Yet she always keeps her distance, an exotic and unreachable beauty who eludes every attempt the player makes to get closer to her. This all changes, however, in one moment of shocking revelation, when the two come face-to-face after an intense, deadly battle. Without any words exchanged between them, Big Boss and Quiet begin a violent, passionate sexual encounter - only for her to literally vanish after he climaxes. Startled, he realizes with disgust and horror that he was simply masturbating with his prosthetic hand. Quiet was never real, just another of Big Boss' PTSD-induced hallucinations - in this case, of his ideal woman. Everything that seemed to indicate the reality of her existence was either more hallucinations or a deliberate charade by his fellow Diamond Dog soldiers to maintain their leader's increasingly fragile state of mind.



alternately, Quiet was a Diamond Dog member killed early on in a very tragic manner. Big Boss hallucinates that anyone who puts on a certain wig is Quiet, which Ocelot and Kaz use as a way to have sex with him without anyone having to acknowledge their intensely homoerotic love triangle.


I dreamt that Konami finally announced the exact nature of the relationship between Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain.
Apparently it is roughly equivalent to the relationship between The Castlevania Adventure and Symphony of the Night.

Big Boss met Quiet at a support group for failed stateless organizations after the tragic death of every other member of Naturistes Sans Frontières (from exposure).
Even though it goes against her deeply held convictions, she wears the bare minimum of clothing to be an effective member in the field and protect herself from sand blowing into uncomfortable places.
She walks around totally nude while at the Diamond Dog base, and encourages other members to do the same - this is the major social taboo that Kojima was concerned he might not be able to explore.

At a given point in game, Snake runs into a terminal, logs into the Diamond Dogs BBS. You figure out the big boss password (it's PENCIL, just like in Wargames) but find it was been (intentionally?) hacked and most records destroyed. All that's left is logs and random emails that you must piece together to find a way to stop the nuclear bomb and reveal the shocking truth about Quiet, with the help of a cybernetic dolphin called *Daicon.
