Mirrormoon is a space exploration game, similar in some respects to Noctis, but with new fangled graphics and observation based puzzles.
| I just wrote: |
It's great! I've been playing a bit today. I hadn't watched the trailer for a while, so bought it only knowing that I had filed it away in my head as 'something I would like', and being reminded by internisus' screenshots in my Steam feed--BTW avoid screenshots if you can. So I went in expecting something pretty and nice sounding and was surprised to be reminded of Noctis, though it's a bit friendlier and has well done, subtle, observation-based, puzzles. I'm going to make a thread about it. |
Something I always plan to include in my own games is some sort of moment of transition at a game's beginning, some sort of acknowledgement and engagement with the player's changing state from real world to videogame world. In Mirrormoon you are presented with an unexplained, seemingly daunting spaceship cockpit, which after taking a few moments you can manipulate and be sent to your first planet. This first planet is still my favourite part of the game (after 1.6 hours, according to Steam). Over time and after careful observation the puzzle/s of the planet are unwrapped, in what must be one of the best examples of a tutorial I can think of--I guess because it after a couple of minutes it doesn't feel like a tutorial anymore.
Like Noctis most of the game involves locating and exploring planets, though here each planet is 'completable' (and some are over far too quickly) by finding an orb, usually revealed by puzzle completion.
I'm hesitant to post screenshots or video, because I've enjoyed every little thing I've been able to discover for myself. I will spoil something for a boast: I found an unnamed star, so if you come across a 'TERROR' think of ol' Blueb.

Is anyone playing it? Thoughts? |

Noctis, but with things to do. It's like somebody out there is making games just for me.
Stuff I haven't figured out yet:
1. Side A remains at 95%, and it won't let you use that side when you go to any planets. I assume it's reserved for the end of the game, especially since beating the first planet gives you that 95% and there's an achievement for it.
2. Side B started at 35%. After exploring maybe 10 planets it's up to 37%. There doesn't seem to be anything unique about the planets that made it pop those 1%s each. I wonder if it's total amount of galaxy explored, and if the other people naming planets contribute to that, or what.
3. Still haven't quite figured out some of the cockpit controls. The dial on the left of the map seems to be some kind of speed setting, as it affects how much of the blue bar you use, which I assume is fuel. Although I wonder why I care because it never seems to run out or affect how fast the ship travels. The two rectangular buttons just underneath the map seem to do absolutely nothing.
I am playing on Season 17 I think so if you start a new game make sure it's on Season 17. There's still plenty of planets to name! _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

RE 3: yeah, I'm pretty sure the number is 'parsecs per second', though the parsecs on the screen on the right don't seem to actually go faster. One of the rectangle buttons locks you target onto--I forget--either the last planet you went to, or the nearest one.
RE 2: My side B started on 33%---hmmm. |

I saw Planet Terror! I didn't visit it though, I was too busy chasing down uncharted planets.
Still stuck at 37% even after like 15 more planets. Achievements mention something about a "star map artifact." I dunno what that is but I'd sure like to find one.
What is your Side B up to now? Have you gotten any increases at all over your starting 33%?
Also, the speed dial totally works. All the way left is slowest, all the way right (default) is fastest. You can tell because after you've chosen a star flipping the dial changes the "time to" (marked "T") readout on the main panel. After you hit the go switch, the time moves to the bottom and counts down in realtime. I used this to get the "travel >10 minutes" achievement.
The two buttons below the map are centering buttons, yeah. They just didn't seem to do anything because I only tried using them while I was stopped at my destination planet. Right button centers on your ship, left button centers on your destination planet. Only really useful when you're scanning around the map while in transit. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

When you said that I went to play and mine was 39% too. I'm pretty sure it's server-wide and represents the total number of planets explored. It's going up pretty slowly... _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

| My understanding is that when the worldwide exploration level nears 100%, a new season is generated with an unexplored galaxy. |

OK so i just got this (i didn't realize it'd actually work on this compy!) and it's prtty neat? i just found a planet on the latest season (22?) with an egg-looking thing on it, though i couldn't do anything to it and it didn't seem necessary to the puzzle
also what's the deal with the sides? i guess side a is just the tutorial thing, but you can replay it too i guess? but it looks like you can only explore planets' sides b, if that makes sense? hmmmmmmm _________________ ♪ x x x ♫ x x x ♫ x ♫ ♫

so! I just started playing this tonight! Interesting game! I'm doing my best not to spoil it for myself, only reading up enough to know that I'm on the right track and confirm suspicions.
Very relaxing game, too. And now it is bedtime. _________________

randomly generated puzzles prove pretty frustrating, once you realize that you just need to solve an 'endgame' puzzle on a randomly selected planet, that you hope to find using the planet names as a guide. I've beaten it once and have no interest in continuing in later 'seasons'. _________________

That does sound pretty crummy.
Generally I don't actually enjoy solving puzzles, so don't bother with it much. Mostly I just like being in a puzzle, or the atmosphere of puzzles (that's an inarticulate way of saying it, but I can't think of the word/s I want). |

Oh is that how it works? I never did figure it out. I assumed it required every planet to be searched with the help of the people in our season, and then some kind of final puzzle. If you have to explore it all yourself and just happen upon the thing you need, that kind of sucks. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |

The multiplayer bits comes from how people name planets. Savvy players will pay attention to the names of nearby planets and nice players will begin naming planets with hints to point other players in the direction of the final planet.
The percentage is the percentage of named planets in a system.
Of course, you can only name planets after solving it but I wish there was more to the space exploration stuff.
Side A can be maxed out at 100% if you solve the Side A tutorial planet in a different order. _________________
