I mean besides Urban Outfitters and American Apparel. Like, a decent pair of skinny-ish shorts that costs like $60. I've searched high and low, and so far all I have found are LL Bean equivalents and designer outlets (I'm just one of those cheapskates that thinks $300 is too much for a pair of shorts. Call me crazy. Scotch & Soda is tempting, though). I guess you could say I dress sort of scene, but not really. I don't want to go down that road. I ride a fixed-gear, though, so that shoehorns me in there somewhere.

Diesel probably has something like what you're looking for. Wait for 50% off or higher sales, or hit ebay.

Oh yeah, thrift stores can sometimes be amazing. Beware of "vintage" stores, though.

There's actually one decent vintage consignment store around here, but they don't have nearly enough men's clothing. Also, most people are 32-36s, whereas I am a slender and sexy 29/30. This makes thrift shopping difficult. Dongle, thank you for the link to that thread. I found a shitload of great stuff.

Slim-fitting, simple stuff. I don't like logos or images on my shirts for some strange reason.

NP. I lurk/rarely post there and on SuFu under the same username. Feel free to say hi! Also, check the parent subforum for that thread since there are StyleForum affiliate discounts. With discounts, Denimbar is the cheapest place to get APC anywhere, for example, and they carry more than denim.

Yeah, why? Most of their shirts/jackets/etc. are too flashy, but they have good midrange denim, and I don't really wear shorts but from what I've seen they look fine. Plus, Mr. Taylor Bee mentioned skinny, and Diesel fits skinny pretty well.

Also, that StyleForum link is a great resource, thanks.

Diesel's terribly overpriced, though. And it makes looking good sort of easy. Which is a good and a bad thing. You always end up looking great, but you don't know WHY you look great. We should hold some sort of contest to see who looks the best. IC had a handsomeness contest a while ago, but it became a "who's more scene" contest instead.

Takoma Park has like five or six resale shops on the same block, and they run the gamut from trendy and overpriced to a basement where they sell vintage Playboys and faux-zebra standing lamps. It is awesome.

I get shirts there when I can.

No, because you will never shave off your ironic moustache that you have fully embraced as not-ironic. Also, you only got like two votes last time. Toups managed the most. If we are to have this contest again, it must be as superficial as possible. You cannot take personality into account at all. Like, Mussolini could win if he were actually handsome.

Newave has a chance because he dresses extremely well. I have a chance because I am just astonishingly attractive beyond all measure.

the washes and wear are generally ridiculous and it's priced like it's higher-end denim. APC runs $112 and that's about as good as you're going to get until you start hitting the $230ish range with cheaper 'canes and Skulls. I guess part of the problem is that even if Diesel's denim designs were better, for that price you could almost get some Diors (in higher quality material no less). Cheap Mondays are probably the best denim bet under $100, though I'd probably save some money and step it up.

Nudies aren't bad but they're a bit overpriced. They won't give you cred anymore but dressing for cred is pretty pointless anyhow. Do what you want!

Taylor Bee wrote:

Well what Diesel actually says is "I have more money than taste so I threw money around and tried to look good" without actually looking good. Most of their clothes just SCREAM "jackass" or "douchebag". Sometimes there are some softer, more minimal pieces that don't have DIESEL and distressing all over the place.

Hypocritically, I kind of love their clothes on girls.

I dress out of my frequently newly-used hand-me-downs and I shop at consignment shops.

I think I pull off handsomeness well enough with them as I could with designer shit. The next threshold of good-looking would require a tidy jacket and a clean pair of shoes, I reckon.

Actually, I really don't understand the pull of $80 khakis and $55 aloha shirts and the like. When I buy a pair of jeans I pay like 20-30 bucks, tend to keep them for about a year. There's this moment in time somewhere in between where I look at them, and see how the fabric has "matured" and faded, and I think "these could probably sell as 'new' for $100."

As for Diesel, i think their Jeans are way overpriced and I've never really found a wash I liked by them. I still stick with my Levis Premium Skinner jeans. Diesel does have some nice, not too expensive, jackets sometimes though.

Also even though I shop at Urban Outfitters, 90% of their clothes is trash, either in style or quality. You sorta have to be picky about them, something thats hard to do when shopping online.

Also thanks Garneau

Buying jeans from anywhere other than a department store is stupid. I will stand by that statement forever.

If you want nice (expensive) shirts, the Imaginary Foundation has a lot of really well done shirts. These shirts will cost you $30, but it's better than being another hipster in a threadless shirt, right?
www.imaginaryfoundation.com

Fat American has a bunch of political shirts that make a bunch liberal statements in obtuse ways, but I can't see anyone not getting behind their Buckminster Fuller shirt:

Levi motherfucking Strauss.

Jeans are work pants. They should be rugged and awesome. Not slimline and wankoff.

Also, while they are not the absolute bleeding fucking edge of style, lately I have been finding that Lucky Brand Jeans look good at an excellent price-to-value ratio!

Also: Holy shit Beams T and that Imagination Foundation site have some mother fucking awesome t-shirts. The one I really liked on the IF site was out of stock though, and the Beams T stuff is really fucking expensive, but I'm darned tempted...

Yeah, that's their old gimmick... it says that on the men's jeans too, unless I've managed to somehow mistakenly purchase only girl's jeans from them, but I'm pretty sure I have not!

Also, this might be the most rofl-tastic-yet-somehow-awesome clothing site known to man:

if you're talking fucking "designer" jeans from Express, you're probably right. If you're talking about jeans into which a lot of TLC was put, I can't disagree more. They last longer, look better, and are more comfortable. You will wear your APCs more than 3x longer than your $40 Levi's shrink-to-fits before they get holes. Again, if you're getting into the $500 Rag and Bone range or 45RPM, sure, there are some vanity dollars there. But considering that jeans are the backbone of the wardrobe, you can blow some money on a few pairs of hundred dollar jeans the same way you can blow some money on a jacket and some boots. You're gonna wear that shit almost daily.

Check the Streetwear and Denim section of Styleforum and go on Superfuture. You will see all kinds of delicious jeans there. Also, look at Self-Edge. Stay away from flashy shit and tacky washes and make sure you're getting well constructed items. Also check out Ande Whall. He's an Australian guy who HANDCRAFTS each pair of jeans. They're not selvage but apparently they're sturdy as hell and an excellent deal at $150.

Dongle, I wear nothing by Levi's and nothing with that fake 'worn out' wash that they do.

I wear out my own jeans, damnit.

Also HSB, I'm pretty sure that's a fucking purse, not a bag a man should be holding.

I thought it looked a bit pursey too, but then I noted the 35x40cm dimensions, which put it well out of purse territory and well into man-purse territory!
