|
|
This game released on the same day as GTAV and beats the hell out of any other game I've played this year.
How many of you are actively playing this right now? Why aren't we on a team together (ps3, preferably)?
Here's some quick bullet points as to why you should be playing this particular video game.
-Giant robot customization. The best the world has to offer.
-Control is tight, precise and very intuitive. The best in the series by far.
-There's a story here, but it's not in your face.
-Huge emphasis on multiplayer, but it's not required.
-Programmable AI giant robots.
-The game is pretty. The soundtrack is good. The aesthetics are there. Framerate is mostly good. Miles above the last game.
Here's a quick run down on how the multiplayer works:
When you boot up the game you create a profile. You are then asked to join a faction. You can browse for an existing faction or create a new one. The faction is essentially a constant room that you sit in every time you boot up the game. If you join a faction with friends, then the game shows you very plainly if your friends are online.
When you or a member of your faction goes to begin a mission (it can be an online versus mission or ANY story mode mission), a notification pops up on the screen that says "Unit Formed. Please Rendezvous." If you pick the Rendezvous option through the menu, the game drops you into a lobby with your faction member. Essentially, you can play through the entire game with a friend.
If you have no friends, you can become a mercenary and help out anyone (faction or not) with whatever mission they are trying to undertake. Also, if you have no friends or internet connection, you eventually unlock these nifty guys called UNACS, which are giant robots with programmable AI that are fully customizable.
The new game plus is essentially two things: A hardcore challenge mode for the existing missions AND an emphasis on the online sorties which are called Normal Sorties and Special Sorties.
Normal Sorties are fairly simple and need to be completed with the help of either UNACS or other players online. Each Normal Sortie completed will net you team points. Once you have acquired enough team points, you can enter into a Special Sortie. The Special Sorties raise your team rank and allow you to capture territory within the online game's overarching war. This doesn't matter much though.
The REAL bosses of the game become unlocked once or twice a week in a short period between when the online war ends and a new one begins. They are 7 ancient weapons full of exaggerated anime glory and are super vicious. Building up your robot and getting acquainted with your perfect build in online post-story mode matches essentially prepares you for the game's real bosses. I haven't been able to beat any of these yet, mostly because I'm on a team full of people who only played in the first week of release. There is still plenty of online activity though, the game isn't "dead," just my particular team happens to be.
Anyway, play this, and more importantly, play this with ME.

| I've been waiting for the PSN price to drop dramatically after the game inevitably stops selling worth a damn since I gave V a pass. I imagine it'll be soon. |

honestly, it's pretty borderline. being in canada means I generally have to add ~$10 to the cheapest US price available (either for the cost of shipping it here or just buying it from a local retailer with slightly higher prices/taxes), and I'd say I'm willing to pay another $10 on top of that on average to not have physical media.
so $33 on amazon is pretty close to $60 on PSN as I'm concerned. but I'm expecting it to go down to $30 on PSN within a few months when I'll likely pick it up. |

You'd pay more to not have physical media? Usually it's the other way around. _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

yeah, I know, and I know I'm being generous with the publisher, since they almost certainly incur less cost on digital distribution (and I can't resell it), and on Steam, at least, digital distribution often gets far cheaper in a way it doesn't on consoles. but I have no desire to have more DVD cases around the house, I don't commit to buying a game with any intention of reselling it (though I often pirate stuff before buying it to see whether it's worth it to me), and when you factor in the "canada" surcharge I outlined in my above post, the bottom price of $20 that most PSN games drop to is really no higher than I'd pay for a used copy at a store.
it's worth saying that part of the reason I don't mind DRM (and thus feel no loss from not having physical media as some sort of fallback) is that it is really easy to steal games and always has been. obviously, my perspective on this is not one that any publisher could endorse, but I'm happy giving them money on my terms. |

Steal Armored Core Verdict Day, play it, then give them your money.
I have this wild theory that the Armored Core games were a packaged deal with the Souls games between FROM SOFTWARE and Bandai Namco. I think Bamco really wants Armored Core to fail so they can justify not releasing future games but still releasing the Souls games for all dat easy cash.
Anyway, I think it's absolutely amazing games like this are even being made anymore, much less on console and not PC, especially Japanese developed. |

I am stopping here to say the Armored Core VDay is great
it is seriously a fantastic game guys
BUT
And this a serious BUT
you need people to invest time with it, or find a group that can with you
the single player is decent fun but the multiplayer is the selling point, and if you cannot devote the time to playing the territory conquests, I would suggest something else _________________ Man, I'm sorry. |

So does this forgive Fromsoft (or Namco, depending on how informed the comment author is) for OG ACV?
Because the only people person who seemed to like that game was Ollie. _________________

Yeah I bought this on launch, but haven't had the time/inclination to spend as much time on it as I have wanted. You can see the few people who bought it in the original ACV thread. Honestly, I just wish it didn't take to so long to do stuff in this game. It's still a good game, just not one that I know if I have the time to bother with.
There is an SB team set up on PS3. If you need details, just check the other ACV thread, or ask and I can grab them. I'll be more than happy to make anyone else the team captain. |

dito.
I didn't expect my car being crashed to death, there's GTA5 and I couldn't get more than two-ish hours down in ACVD, yet I feel like I am missing out on a lot of fun here. _________________

hey, me and my crew played the crap out of it! our team even had a majority of the conquest map for a brief time! mostly due to the one-man wrecking crew of my friend (who even made an SB account to rep the game!) _________________

Man I'm really terrible at the story sorties. I was having a lot of difficulty with one so I changed my mech configuration for long range combat then an AC appeared that did nothing but melee and made me his bitch. _________________

For PS2 I'd go with Nexus or Last Raven because they have dual analog controls. If you can play on a vita you can configure dual analog on any of the PS2->PSP ports, including those that don't have them on PS2. _________________ PSN: TaipeiGamer |

weeeeell
Silent line/Nexus have dual analog controls so they are leaps and bounds easier to control
Last Raven is the most complete of them all (it's the last AC game using the AC3 engine so it's got all sorts of bells and whistles on it, part damage included!) but it is very difficult if you don't have a great grasp of the game systems
and it's got a pretty decent campaign so there's that
for ps1 era everyone goes straight to Masters of Arena, since that's the most balanced and workable of them
I've got a soft-spot for silent line though (and by extension, Nexus) Nine-Breaker isn't so great though, it's designed as a series of challenges with arena matches tucked in, so it is like masters of arena if you are playing it alone
ah and AC2 and AC2: Another Age are pretty interesting but they aren't as complete as the games in the AC3 engine
It's kinda neat to trace how the games developed over the years - there's a pretty distinct line of evolution culminating in the branches of ACV and AC4 _________________ Man, I'm sorry. |

I have Armored Core 3. From my limited play time, it seems hard to get into. I won't be able to even buy anything until I've completed tons of missions. _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

Honestly they all require a significant initial investment, but it's usually around 10 missions or so for the games to open up and parts to be thrown at you
I think that's about an hour or two of play time? _________________ Man, I'm sorry. |

if you're familiar with the series, it's the usual AC offer more or less. Missions are on the very short side, but focused and rather challenging. Story seems the usual cryptic mess, which is fine. You'll spend a lot of time in the garage as usual, if not more. Sadly the very big fun bosses are an online only thing again, hm. |
