So, uh, there's some new, next generation-ish systems coming out this month. The PS4 comes out in ~2 days and the Xbox One is out in about 9. They both do advanced fancy things, like playing nice-looking versions of games you may or may not already care about, streaming your gameplay and voice to the world and not playing MP3s or CDs.

So, if you're getting a new funbox this month, come in and post about how there's nothing to play for the next 6 months.

(seriously, I'm expecting Resogun to be the best game out of either system's library)

With that said, let's look at some sexy teardown pictures:

I have never been less enthused about a hardware generation in my life. I am pretty hype for all the inevitable stumblings they're both going to take though!

Pretty sure PS4 is set to not run any 'unauthorized' content whatsoever, hence the lack of any sort of generalized non-Sony media playback.

I am proud to say I'm on the one gaming forum on the internet that doesn't care so much about the CONSOLES as it does the actual implications they have to GAMES

This is the first generation of Consoles I won't be participating in (ok if there's say, an actually good Steel Battalion a-like released I will end up with whatever it's released on I've got a weakness)

I'm gonna give it a few months to decide which I'll be picking up for sure, but it's most likely going to be the PS4.
Waiting until there's games worth getting though (definitely getting one for GG Xrd if I don't already have one by then)

I've been without a modern console since my 360 died some months back, so I'm actually really looking forward to getting one of these.

wish I knew someone buying the xbone on day one so I could try out KI.

If I were getting launch games, it'd be Knack or maybe Killzone? (never played any of them before and they look okay)
Resoguns probably gonna be pretty cool

My god I have impressively shitty impulse control.

Edit: Wow, really tired of my posts getting stealth deleted. There was a large one above this one that's gone now. That's intensely aggravating; if it's someone's goal to get me to just give up bothering, it's working.

So, what is Resogun and why should anyone be excited? I've heard several people say it looks to be the most interesting game at launch, but I've never seen or heard anything about the actual game itself.

I Think Resogun will be free for PS+. So if you want that game anyway, now may be a good time to start your PS+ subscription.

I will probably eventually get a PS4. I....am not financially able to purchase so freely, right now. I know it will have exclusives that I may want and I also want to play BF4 with the Blu-ray.com people. Playing BC2 with them was an absolute blast. Unfortunately, I sat out for BF3 on consoles, because it wasn't very good. BF3 in general, was kind of a step back. But the consoles versions controlled horribly and were severely gimped in player counts for multiplayer.

It is incredibly stupid how the console companies are going for such a locked down/locked in experience. In the end, I think it will hurt them a bit with PR and eventually they will have to relax things a bit. I think some board members are just crossing their fingers that some how magically consumers will just take it up the ass.

I do also have a solid gaming PC that is a bit more powerful than a PS4. So I will be gaming on that side, as well. and it is shaping up to be one of the most interesting times in recent memory, to be a PC gamer.

But, all total, my gaming habits have severely waned in the past three years. I pretty much only really care about the next Souls game, Battlefield, the next Metal Gear, and the occasional Rally game. Aside from that, I pretty much just have occasional one-off experiences with games that for whatever reason, catch my interest. But it's not like when I was younger, where I played a lot of games, all the time. I go weeks now, barely playing anything.

I'm waiting to find out which system the shmups decide to go with this gen, as those are some of the few games I really like that don't get home ports regularly. But that will be awhile, so I am good.

I won't be buying any of them for the foreseeable future. The only reason I could see myself buying one is because Hidetaka Miyazaki is doing some cool new thing and not releasing it to PC for some reason.

ditto. have no plans to buy a new console any time soon or possibly (??) ever?

sometimes i'm tempted to get a Wii U, but then i don't know why, so i don't.

my guess is, were i to get one of these, eventually, it'd be a PS4.

I can't see buying one.

Maybe someday I'll buy a Vita or 3DS on a whim. A big heavy box that I need to hook up to a tv to play is a much less likely impulse purchase.

Resogun's gameplay reminds me a lot of this:

http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Orbitron-Revolution/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d802585509f9

The reason I bring it up is that game was solid but sort of underwhelming, so I'm not sure I get all the Resogun hype.

My launch PS3 is still chugging along!

Anyways, I should have a PS4 coming in 2 days... no idea what I'm going to do with it. Maybe Knack? I doubt that, though, and I have no interest in Killzone. I guess I'll just dink around the PSN store and see if there's anything I want.

Seems like there is zero reason to own one of these things for the next six months? I do look forward to the day a couple years from now when buying one of them makes sense.

Nurburgring absence snuffed out any misguided inkling to pay $600 to Forza.

Maybe I'll buy a WiiU in the next few weeks to play the new Mario game quickly, sell it off before Xmas.

I bought a 3DS to play 3D Land and Crimson Shroud and made money on it when I sold it off, that was a fine plan, you could probably do likewise with the WiiU.

anyway I ignored the current console generation apart from occasional exposure to 360s between 2006 and 2008 until buying a PS3 in 2011, and I have actually gotten a lot of happy use out of the PS3 since. so I guess I'll wait and see whether this one gets its act together inside of five years?

honestly, I'm the last person to advocate for buying something at launch, but I don't think this is quite fair -- the lead-free solder issue that bit the 360 in the ass was uncharted territory and not really generalizable. everything about the hardware design of these new machines screams "sensible" by comparison to the recent past (which is also why people are bored).

like Isfet, if I do get one, I imagine it'll be the PS4 for the usual reasons (better likelihood of covering your japanese-titles-that-don't-get-ported-to-PC bases; doesn't get in your face about being a media consumption home appliance).

I would have got a PS4 maybe probably but the whole "you cannot play any music on this that is not branded with Sony-specific DRM" absolutely killed my interest in it. Like 3/4 of the reason I have a PS3 is that it is my Living Room Box - just like they want it to be! - and now you're saying I can't play my god damned music on it? What is this madness?

Gironika: Don't think they are. But you just know it'll be DLC later on.

Me, I'll pass on the XBone because OMG ZEALOT, and don't really expect to get a ps4 until sometime next year. Waay too many PS3/PC games to work thru, not to mention DkS2 will be sure to consume my March/April/whatever. Absolutely no impetus.

Sony is claiming that MP3 and DLNA support is coming "soon". The One is kinda in a similar spot, where it's not a full-featured DLNA client, but you can still push media to from a compatible device. It too has a fancy service you have to pay for to get in-game music (the ghosts of Zune).

PS4 reviews are slowly trickling out from Trusted Videogame Reviewers. Resogun is the best, Knack is an affront to humanity (still buying it, 60 bucks in PSN credit), Killzone is mostly good. Oh, and Sony has put out the firmware update so you can pre-load it onto a thumb drive and have the ability to fail to connect to PSN during launch as everyone tries to get on at the same time.

Not getting one of these toyboxes for 2 or 3 years, or next From Software dark fantasy project that isn't also on PC, whichever comes first.

it's a media streaming protocol. there's a pretty good open implementation that would supposedly let my PS3 stream from my linux machine which I guess wouldn't work otherwise (for lack of support outside of windows) but my linux machine and my PS3 are literally side by side under my desk in the corner of the living room, so that's moot for me.

It's a callback to the old arcade game Defender. I think what has most people excited about it is the graphics (not that I'm using this as a knock against anyone), but in addition to that Housemarque made Super Stardus HD for the PS3's release, another update of an old arcade game Super Stardust, which was an exubrant graphics showcase while also being really fun.

The timing just worked out for me. I've had a hankering recently to play Killzone again so I decided to get a PS4. Thanks to some additional deals I'll also have Knack, Battlefield 4, and Lego Marvel Super Heroes alongside all of the free PSN games. That's a lot of stuff and far more than I expected to end up with but I should be good on games for a while. I played Knack at a PS4 demo station and my interest in that game cooled down a lot. The level designs in the demo were very sparse with long walks though empty streets while the enemy encounters were brief and easy even on the highest difficulty. I could see it being fun if they condensed the levels and introduced a good variety to the enemy types but looking around the internet today that doesn't seem to be the case. The controller itself is fine except for the d-pad which I feel is too large to comfortably hit diagonals on. It's a little larger than the PS3 controller to fit the touch pad and the button placement of the Option and Share buttons will take some getting used to. While I didn't find it to be the euphoric ambrosia people clamored it was around E3 it felt perfectly serviceable.

I also got to play a demo unit of the XBox One and I feel like the new controller on that is a very mixed bag that left me with an overall bad impression. The face buttons feel nicer to press and while the form factor I recall might have been better than the 360 controller, everything on the controller has been compressed closer together and doesn't feel as good to use. The d-pad would be great if it weren't so tiny and the edges of it so hard, the sticks feel a little too light on the resistanct it provides, the "bumpers" are still absolute crap and are placed even higher compared to where you fingers rest on the trigger, and the rumble feels very unnatural and "clicky" in both the body and the new "impulse triggers". It felt like someone accidently mistook the complaints of the OG Xbox controller for changes needed on the 360 controller.

DLNA is the set of standards that lets PS3 Media Server stream illicit goods from your computer to your PS3 and other compatible devices. It wasn't one the PS3 at launch either, so it can come "soon".

Yeah there are some more strange omissions coming to light, particularly from Sony:

no 3d blu-ray support or 3D gamin support

the PS4 appears to once again have wierdly incomplete sound optons. the PS3 was like this, until a later hardware revision allowed a complete set of sound options.

I can't believe that SONY hasn't tested 3d blu-rays and gaming to death on the PS4, especially considering how mature it ended up on the PS3. I wonder if they are holding out through the holiday season, hoping people will buy separate blu-ray players, etc. then come spring time, magical firmware that brings all these features...

I'll pick up a PS4 somewhere down the line once there are some more compelling games for it. I don't think the system will interest me much until Japanese dev support ramps up which wont be for a while because the system isn't launching until next year there.

Sony has now folded under backlash pressure (RE: DLNA, MP3, possibly other things). Looks like their corprorate finger crossing didn't work. On top of that, they are playing the innocent/ignorant/naive card:

This and Dead Rising 3 sort of maybe. Looks like the only significant changes to DR3 are more zombies on screen/in a level instance (?) and more weapon combos ehhhh. There's also SWERY's D4 thing that is somehow related to WARP/Kenji Eno's D games.

Digital Foundry says Dead Rising 3 averages about 20 frames per second...

*hopefully they will iimprove the framerate through patches. Because the game was totally rushed. It was only like three months ago that preview builds were slogging at 10 - 15fps.
