Okay so, I made a Twitch channel. Click the little Twitch icon in my signature to go there.
So far all my streaming's been done from the PS4 because you pretty much push a button and it goes. I've decided to set this up for PC, though. So far so good, using OBS to actually do the 'cast, but some quick questions for anyone with more experience than me on this:
Any way to have a chat overlay a la Steam, or maybe a transparent window I can have over a fullscreen game? Or is the best option to cobble a second monitor on here instead of continuing to obstinately use only one? Second monitor does seem like it would save a lot of headache if I want to be able to see the stream chat AND play in Fullscreen, so I'll look into that unless anyone else has an easier solution.
Any settings to definitely use/avoid using? The plan right now is 720p @ 60FPS. I have pretty fast Silicon-Valley internets and a fast enough PC that this should be doable, but I've yet to fiddle with it overmuch so if anyone knows of some pitfalls to avoid, let me know.
Anyway I'm gonna spend the next hour or so futzing with it, so if you see Ys I & 2 pop up in my stream, that's what I'm doing. _________________

This is how it came out, if anyone's got any pointers.
I'm not a real big fan of the 30 FPS even though the 60 seemed to result in a lot of skipped frames. _________________

Does the 60fps skip to the point it dips below 30 effective fps?
If not, what's the problem? Should still be better than plain 30. _________________ Guayaba 2600 |

I've been streaming for a bit, but I've been mainly using Xsplit to stream which is really easy to set up. Unfortunately my sub expired and since I barely ever stream nowadays (and Xsplit got haxxed) I find no reason to renew my sub for Xsplit. I mainly streamed games from consoles using a capture card, I keep saying I'd stream from a PC emulator (or steam things) and just never do.
So far switching over to OBS is kind of aggravating. Reminds me of the times I switched over from WinAMP to Foobar in the headaches, dizzying amount of options, ugly UI, and having to find plug-ins for anything you want to try. For a free product it's great, unfortunately most help files out there are written for madmen by madmen. In which I mean that the most explanation that is offered on OBS forums are "touch this, don't touch this" and not a lot of "why" and "what this does".
For chat, the most useful thing is to have a second monitor or to use a cheap tablet / laptop just to view the chat windows.
My biggest challenge is that I never know if anything sound right. What may sound okay to me, may likely be horrible for the end user. Game too loud, too quiet, voice levels, I don't know how you're supposed to monitor this since (i assume) everyone listens to things in their own way (headphones, laptop speakers, surrounds, etc...)
Anyway, the only PROTIP I have is to stream at a rate of 2000kbps-3500kbps. The only resolutions I ever cast at are 480p (old games) and 720p (new games). I never go higher because (1) my upload sucks and (2) everyone else's download sucks; at least for a live show (live casts don't buffer like a VoD).
There is a new stream service out there called hitbox.tv which is an alternative to keep in mind for when Twitch implodes on itself someday? |

| Is anyone aware of a stream service that allows you to log the chat with the video? That'd be a nice alternative to putting the chat in the video stream itself. |

You can log Twitch chat as it's just IRC. What I do to stream chat overlay is open a secondary window in hexchat for just my stream chat and then set that window as an overlay in OBS. It's actually really easy to do! _________________
