Hey! Starbound early access beta unlocked today! It's like Terraria in space but... better?
I haven't had much time to try it out yet but I wanted to make a thread to see if anyone else nabbed it and wants to try multiplayer. Will update this post when I have more feedback to give. For now check out my hobo hut and tiny farm~
Ok so after playing for probably a decent bit I'm feeling a lot of promise for the game but it's not quite there yet. I can see why the team didn't want to do an early release so soon, but in its current form it's perfectly playable. Some are reporting crashing or failure to launch but I haven't had either issue so far. It might not even run on Windows XP, if that applies to anyone thinking of getting in on this early.
I'll be posting screenshots here: http://steamcommunity.com/id/rawket/screenshots/
Some gameplay footage, streamed for ~3 hours with cactusfriend: http://www.twitch.tv/bizzuh/b/485017726

Playing it.
Digging in a gravel/sand pit is like flailing around in a ball pit; it's very pleasurable. Very pretty game.
Grinding for pixels (some sort of money?) because you need them for crafting is stupid. I'm at the point where I have the materials to upgrade to gold pickaxe but I can't because I need 300 more pixels. |

It's weird, I could have sworn I bought this in the pre-order or kickstarter or something, but nothing is turning up for "starbound" in any of my email accounts.
Damn. Is it too late to get in on this if I haven't already bought the game? _________________

Check your Humble account before you do though, I never got an email but my key was waiting there for me. _________________

I haven't decided whether to try this early or wait for the real release. I'm certainly tempted to get it now.
How does multi-player work? Can you jump around to random people's worlds, or are you confined to a server you set up or explicitly join? |

You can jump to any planet on a server, and if you're in a party you can also beam up to your friends' ships so everybody can jump to the same planet at once. You don't jump between random servers, but they did talk about some PvP modes for the future that sound interesting...! _________________

I played this a little last night, and I like it so far.
But I understand that some of the test builds are likely to reset characters and worlds. So I guess it's not a good idea to do too much now, unless you don't mind starting over periodically. |

-snip-
My barrier to these games is I log on and everyone seems light years ahead of me, and I could never catch up, it seems almost pointless in joining? Not sure if this game address that, not that I could imagine they have any reason to.

Am I really gonna have to moderhate my own thread?
The update tomorrow is revamping the damage system in favor of a straight up damage and health boost for tougher enemies rather than the current nebulous armor penetration system, e.g. a 10 damage 10 armor penetration sword does normal damage to a level 10 or below monster while a 10 damage 5 armor penetration sword does almost nothing to a level 10 monster. There will also be a character wipe, so I hope nobody got super attached to their first characters!
I can't really say much about progression yet as it's actively being worked on but we did fight the first boss and move on to the next sector, so it seems that each sector of space is guarded by a specific boss that unlocks new technologies, planet types, possibly even biomes and dungeons too!
The quick patches and open development discussion makes me feel pretty confident that the game will end up pretty great when it reaches full launch. |

It really depends on what aspects of the game appeal to you most. My favorite parts are the exploration and building, so I don't mind just playing by myself.
I'd recommend playing single-player when first starting out, unless you play with someone else who is also just starting. I like multi-player mostly because it's fun to come across tunnels and buildings left by others, not necessarily to fight with or against anyone. The most fun I've had with simultaneous multi-player is just digging randomly with someone, with both placing torches, building platforms, etc. |

| The current top tier armor with its energy superpwoers is hilarious when you get the air dash tech, specifically the version of it that makes you shit butterflies. |

I haven't made the distress beacon yet but I do hope some weapon tweaks are in the pipeline. It'd be nice if I could aim my spear at least in eight directions to make that delay before the strike a bit more worth it or being able to hold it in a ready position to bypass the start up on at least one enemy. _________________

Hey there was a big update today adding variable gravity, weather effects, and different atmosphere types among other things. Gonna check it out later and probably update this topic with some screenshots and a better OP. _________________

I'm looking forward to trying this game, but I'm holding out until they stop erasing characters and worlds with updates, at least.
I'd appreciate it if anyone keeping up with it would mention in this thread when it's relatively stable and maybe ready for multi-player. (It looks like the company that I've rented Terraria server space from in the past is already supporting this game, with a warning that it might not work very well.) |

I run a server; it's no big deal - just make sure you've got the port properly mapped. If you can connect from within your network but not outside, that's your problem.
Aside from portmapping, if your router supports UPnP it could be trying to map it automagically and that could be failing. |

From the newest patch notes:
Absolutely massive changes to disk serialization (sorry reversers), which will allow us to never need to wipe players or ships again, and hopefully never need to wipe worlds again.
Hmm. Maybe it's time I check this out... _________________

Well, I just checked and, yeah, my character was wiped. I was done with the game anyway (as of the last Beta, Terraria is still the better game as it has a much more sensible progression), but now that I know I won't get screwed out of all my nice stuff, maybe I should start it up again. _________________

so is anyone running an SB Starbound server, because I got the itch again and would love some help/company whilst conquering planet by planet with my robot love ship. _________________ Steam: Godamn_Milkman |

Looks like the devs said earlier this week that the progression you see now is quite different from what they have planned for the finished product, that it's the way it is now for testing purposes.

I'm still looking forward to this game, but I'm still not ready to jump in. Maybe when they stop calling it "early" beta, at least. |
