I haven't decided whether to try this early or wait for the real release. I'm certainly tempted to get it now.
How does multi-player work? Can you jump around to random people's worlds, or are you confined to a server you set up or explicitly join? |

I played this a little last night, and I like it so far.
But I understand that some of the test builds are likely to reset characters and worlds. So I guess it's not a good idea to do too much now, unless you don't mind starting over periodically. |

| My barrier to these games is I log on and everyone seems light years ahead of me, and I could never catch up, it seems almost pointless in joining? Not sure if this game address that, not that I could imagine they have any reason to. |
It really depends on what aspects of the game appeal to you most. My favorite parts are the exploration and building, so I don't mind just playing by myself.
I'd recommend playing single-player when first starting out, unless you play with someone else who is also just starting. I like multi-player mostly because it's fun to come across tunnels and buildings left by others, not necessarily to fight with or against anyone. The most fun I've had with simultaneous multi-player is just digging randomly with someone, with both placing torches, building platforms, etc. |

I'm looking forward to trying this game, but I'm holding out until they stop erasing characters and worlds with updates, at least.
I'd appreciate it if anyone keeping up with it would mention in this thread when it's relatively stable and maybe ready for multi-player. (It looks like the company that I've rented Terraria server space from in the past is already supporting this game, with a warning that it might not work very well.) |

| Well, I just checked and, yeah, my character was wiped. I was done with the game anyway (as of the last Beta, Terraria is still the better game as it has a much more sensible progression), but now that I know I won't get screwed out of all my nice stuff, maybe I should start it up again. |
Looks like the devs said earlier this week that the progression you see now is quite different from what they have planned for the finished product, that it's the way it is now for testing purposes.

I'm still looking forward to this game, but I'm still not ready to jump in. Maybe when they stop calling it "early" beta, at least. |
