HEADS UP EVERYONE !!

Tomorrow I will be going to Awesome Games Done Quick, a speedrunning marathon raising money for cancer research!
it will run all of next week!
tune in and you might see me on stream!!

http://marathon.speeddemosarchive.com/

I will definitely be doing commentary for Halo 2 plus I will be in and around the stream room at various points. I'll be (one of) the brown guy(s)

Reed whoa I didn't know you were this far into the speedrunning community. That's awesome.

I've said this like a dozen times before but it makes me feel ancient to think that the dominant method of consuming speedruns in 2014 is via livestream.

looking at the schedule

holy shit, someone's running Kendo Rage. that's fucking awesome

anyway, the most important part of ADGQ is the Awful Games block, even though I grapple with their definition of "awful" sometimes. like, even though they have Pac-Man 2 on tap for it, I'll still watch it because Pac-Man 2 is hilarious

also, one of the first runs is a Viewtiful Joe run. I saw this last month during the SRG marathon/trainwreck and I can say that is the one thing you should watch because it's kind of amazing. I'll try to make time for the H2 run too, even though it's been sadly slotted at midnight.

edit: man, what, the co-op Borderlands 2 run is in the middle of the night too. I've seen bits of it and solo runs and that shit is crazy and to bury it seems like a shame

The run making the cut to AGDQ in the first place kind of means the opposite of being 'buried'. Besides, it's always prime time in some part of the world!

while admittedly my view is time zone-centric, the inclusion of some other games (or, hell, an entire block dedicated to games of dubious quality) and the relativity to which games that they know will get viewership being scheduled for prime time spots for those of us in the Americas makes it feel like some games are getting 'buried' or lost a bit in the mix.

with that said, I'll still try to carve out time to watch it live since my schedule is fucking barren this month.

oh man someone is speed running kendo rage, count me in
seriously, ever since i played it it has been one of my favorite games on the SNES.
i tend to think of it as a much better Valis game than any of the actual valis games.

highly recommend watching the Plutonia run when it comes up. I've been watching him practice and he's got that game down ridiculously well. (also the go 2 it donation bonus is liable to blow up in his face a few times, which is good times)

Yea some good games have shitty time slots or got passed over for worse games. Halo 2 wouldn't have got back in without a lot of support from people. I have my gripes but at the end of the day all I can do is state my opinion and hope it holds some weight

Ps everyone is cool here! Hope to see bort/chef at the Barkley run

the viewtiful joe run is absolutely magical. god, this was the last good thing capcom published before they became "new capcom".

i always have disliked that my timezone always ensures i will never see that "awful" games segment. but i am pretty happy that jRPGs were kept to a minimum, except for the most glitchy ones.

The Super Mario World TAS was something special. Everyone needs to check that out once it's archived or put on TASVideos.

Now the fire alarm is going. Camera's still rolling, streaming an empty room to 74k viewers. The intensity of the Tri-Hex's run of Yoshi's Island was too much!

when SMW popped up on the Tasbot portion, I figured after a bit that they were gonna do the trick where you can glitch the game into going to the end - a TAS of that has been around for at least a year or so - but debugging new games into the program was mind blowing.

i figured it was just a matter of time before they did it, honestly. they had (a) a way of corrupting memory in a deliberate fashion rather than randomly, and (b) a way of jumping to that memory.

they'd already done it with pokemon yellow after all

debuting it on tasbot live was pretty genius though. even guys who know TASes get giddy at seeing a brand new tas on a famous game.

Barkley run was amazing. I literally shed a tear during Laz's speech.

Video here: http://www.twitch.tv/speeddemosarchivesda/b/493407760?t=19h15m

Reddit has a VoDs thread, though I find Twitch's video playback to be incredibly slow, so might be worth waiting for SDA to upload things to youtube.

Laz is an amazing dude and his speech choked me up for sure. It's a shame the game crashed during golden potato and chaos dunk. PC setup is my one huge gripe, these people don't know what they're doing and don't want anyone's help either.

Get hype fo f-zero x on Saturday ... Get well soon wmj! Everybody here is sick because the air is dry

aside from it being smack dab in the middle of the Awful games block, enjoyment of watching/playing Pac-Man 2 is almost entirely based on how hilarious you find Pac-Man being a smug, tempermental asshole. I'd imagine a speedrun of it would be less entertaining, as the runner knows what they're doing and doesn't really have to deal with Pac-Man being a smug, tempermental asshole

personally, I love that smug strut Pac-Man has, high steppin' like he owns the place

oh no I like Pac-man 2 but the speedrun was not a speedrun at all and it was just watching a bad let's play of pac-man 2. They actually went overtime because they wanted to show off all the interactions you could have with pacman.

It was just boring.

was it as boring as a speedrun of starcraft 2 single player? the stream went from 100k to 55k lulz. especially stupid considering there are always tons of sc2 streams going anyway.

They kept it because when they performed the Starcraft 2 run last year they had a number of teams and organizations donate money. And we got sassy Hannah on camera, so it wasn't all bad.

Borderlands 2 co-op was amazing with a couple of the devs on Skype. Current run with Dishonoured is also amazing because the runner has kept up with interesting commentary while pulling off some tricky stuff.

I've seen Zallard stream SPO a bunch and that was insane to see go as well as it did in marathon at all. Definitely one of the best moments.

Hoy is no joke and that he won the fight was a miracle.

it ain't just any lead developer that man is david kirsch! a true OG in the sf2 world. this guy comes from way back when seth killian and the cannon brothers spent their time flaming each other on usenet.

kirsch also INVENTED capture the flag at id soft. a true legend!

i wish those players would have nagged him for stories and silly reflections of the old days! a true legend and all they wanted to discuss were their scripted strats :(
