The Swapper gets my full endorsement.

The only other thing on that list that I played was Anti-Chamber. Which despite looking cool, I sort of had to force myself to sit down and play. Which is to say, sometimes I'm not in the mood for X type of game. Once I did get into it, I was happy. It's pretty unique and is great at what it's doing.

I like the look of Banished! out next week, apparently!

The Banner Saga was pretty alright. Not amazing, but a solid game. I haven't played many of the others.

I'm looking forward to Saturated Dreamers, Revenge of the Sunfish 2, and Barkley 2. A lot of those games look nice, but it's hard to keep up with all of the indie games these days.

I've played some of those listed, but I can't decide whether I'd call any of them great (though I'd definitely call some of them good). Starbound might end up being great, even if we've seen most of its best qualities already in Terraria.

I'm afraid I cringelaughed at the title "That Dragon, Cancer"

Floor Is Jelly is okay so far, not feeling compelled to finish it

Keen to see how all those Metroid-y ones turn out, also RIOT

Roll on 2015 for them I suppose

Yeah, eagerly waiting on Riot and Ghost of a Tale, as well as Barkley 2. Also hoping for Sealark to come out by the end of this year, but given Clair is the sole developer, I wouldn't be surprised if it's not out until early next year.

I can comment on this since I played some of the released games last year.

From the 2013 list:

I'd say that must plays are:
Gone Home. A great narrative setup using space and text to build a world and convey three entwined plot threads.
The Stanley Parable. A must if you have ever thought about videogames at all. It's funny, too.

Additionally:
Antichamber is a pretty interesting experiment with space and aesthetics.
I hear Amnesia: Pigs Edition is like a crossover between Dear Esther and the first Amnesia, which sounds alright to me.
Path of Exile is a very solid Diablo clone (some say better than Diablo III, which might be true given the lack of money-grabbing features despite being completely free to play)
The Banner Saga looks great, but I need to put a bit more time in it. There's a free edition on Steam right now.
Gunpoint is a pretty decent puzzle-platformer-esque game with neat pixel art but unfortunately dialogue that's too self aware and meta (not in a good way)
Volgarr the Viking is a very cool, tough as nails sidescroller with strong influences from Rastan, but also Ghosts & Goblins and old school arcade sword & sorcery brawlers in general
Sportsfriends looks intriguing. There's a game by Bennet Foddy in there.

I really want to play Octodad and Barkley 2. Hecka excited for Routine. I'd have gotten Republique already (which our very own Adilegian worked on) if I had an iPad. I feel I'll have to play this game on a touchscreen larger than my phone.
Spy party, the asymmetric multiplayer game where you play either as a spy trying to infiltrate a posh party or the sniper tasked with discovering and killing him, looks great. I've applied for a beta ages ago but no luck so far.
Quadrilateral Cowboy sounds like a game I'd like in concept. Let's hope the execution is up to par.

I've heard that Octodad was better as a free indie as the commercial release is mostly padding + production values

Banner Saga is way too spare for my tastes, that genre is better with maximalism

I love Amnesia and Dear Esther, but Machine for Pigs' loss of the sanity mechanic is pretty much unforgivable. Being able to look at the baddies in an Amnesia-style just makes enemy encounters into not very good stealth.

Oh, I didn't notice The Stanley Parable in the list. I think that one qualifies as great, as much as I was ready to dislike it for being a little too self-aware.

Antichamber and The Swapper are both bad the same way Portal 2 is bad in that there's not puzzles, there's 'do everything you can with what you've unlocked currently,' and neither of them are very charming. Antichamber gets points over The Swapper because there was one puzzle that was pretty clever, and because The Swapper is a game in which you can solve puzzles before you get to them by going 'what kind of puzzles could you make with this ability?' That + the slow walking speed made it an effortless glide of ugly graphics.

Oh, I liked The Stanley Parable, so I don't come off as completely bitter about spending money on stuff people tell me I should like.

Every game on last years list that sounded interesting lead to a link that was more disappointing then the last...

Axiom Verge- just looks like it's been pushed back into dev hell

Heaven Variant - now downgraded to just a soundtrack, and the cancellation of this game is depressing note to just finding out to what could have existed.

Then Radio The Universe looked like it could be something fascinating, but is just dead apparently.

I'm glad some projects got finished, and very glad Gunpoint came around, but it's sad to see such promising ideas die on the vine. But it does give more appreciation to the pet projects that do make it through, it's a reminder of the work they have to put in to make it all work.

Excuse me while I be a fanboy for a minute.

eh? did you play the whole thing? Because there's....one core mechanic and nothing else. There's no unlocking abilities or picking up new tools along the way. Like the First Portal, the game simply slowly forces you to figure out what is possible. And like the first Portal, the game ends before the mechanics are overused!

you could say the same about most puzzle games that ride on flexing minimal mechanics. So what?

Quote:

A. The walking speed was fine and was probably deliberately slower than other games, to emphasize use of the core mechanic.

B. I'll raise my hand in contrast and say the graphics and presentation were amazingly atmospheric, and gave a very good sense of place. Plus points for the fact that all the main parts were hand crafted and/or made from "found" items.

It's fine if you didn't like it. But I think it is a bit naive to dismiss it as an ugly slog. There are FAR more ugly and uninspired looking games released any given month.

I mean, Portal did all the same things you just talked about and I bet you loved it. If you didn't, many did. I certainly did. The Swapper is every bit as good as Portal, without feeling like a Portal ripoff while playing it. I think that's awesome.
The story is fresh, the presentation is more than fresh, it is damn near unique. and the gameplay is fresh. And there's a few lingering expositional, contemplative moments that really drive it all in deep.

Pretty sure I got a Kickstarter backer email from the dev not too long ago and things seemed to be progressing slowly but steadily?

Yeah, dated Feb 2, 2014:

Quote:
hi,

not sure what to say besides 'i'm still working on the thing' so today the update is about miscellaneous you say no to drugs, juicy j can't stuff. feel free to stop reading if this doesn't interest you

maintaining framerate on older machines: using the steam hardware survey as a general guide i try to restrain rtu's hardware demand according to some x minimum specs such that *at least* 95% of users fit above it (where 'min specs' is capable of running the game at ~60 fps during the game's theoretical max load situation--don't ask me exactly what it is yet). some notes: a) this hasn't been field tested extensively, b) steam users who submit hardware surveys may be totally unrepresentative of rtu's target audience for some reason, and c) this entire process is decisively scientific (it is not at all scientific). eyeballing for qa might be punishable by death if this were a high-end gaming title but rtu has a little more room for error

for machines below min spec or those with the odd software issue, 30fps mode is available as a last-ditch option but the goal is to make sure that no one actually needs to use it. graphics settings are almost entirely static due to the specific design of the game's visuals but if time allows, a reduced graphics mode may be devised for those who have not mastered 1 s/s time travel and are stuck in 2004. my feeling is that if you use your pc to regularly play games or watch videos or run weather modelling software you will have no issues. it's not intended to run well on a decade old winxp laptop though. as a developer i hope i can at least rely on that much

time wise, cutscenes are a source of uncertainty. all progress on it is fixed at the end of the dev timeline (you may have noticed a recent absence of artwork) in order to avoid having to redraw scenes depicting a sprite or some environmental detail every time said sprite/env graphics gets changed. it's a predictive measure meant to save time but it also means that there hasn't been a chance to gauge how much work these scenes are going to take. if it ends up being a cause of delay because i've failed to account for it, at least the game itself will have been finished by that point

regarding gamepads: they will be supported but the caveat is that rtu is designed for a keyboard first. the issue isn't with the number of keys but with the difference in mechanical action between dpad and wasd/arrowkeys. i've found my dpad (i own a 360 controller) to be indecisive and poor for movement (it feels like a diminished analog stick) but it may just be a matter of personal preference. the other difference is in the number of options a player has for mapping hotkeys but i give unlimited freedom to the player to decide how this is done.

all that said, i've been getting messages asking about a release date. i'm estimating now, but you can tentatively expect rtu towards the end of the year

tfyt
