This game comes out today in the US and has 4-player online + 4 selectable characters + 400 giant bugs. I will be getting home and getting started on the PS3 version around 6:35pm EST tonight. Let us go forth and shoot bugs.

ID: PooglyWoogly

Edit: I just saw mentioned on the game's PLaystation Blog post that there's some sort of Facebook promotion going on to get one of the DLC packs for free. I haven't looked at what it entails yet. http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/02/18/earth-defense-force-2025-out-today-on-ps3/

First impressions: Sloooowwwwdoooowwwwn. The framerate in the PS3 version is surprisingly poor. It's always sub 30 FPS and only gets poorer depending on the environment, the weapons, and the chaos. If you look at the sky. You can get 30 if you look straight up at the sky though, so there's that. Sometimes the cursor would keep moving for a bit even after I stopped holding a direction although this could possible just be a quirk of the Fencer class. The new classes, Air Raider and Fencer, do seem cool. The Air Raider's artillery fire is absolutely glorious to behold and the Fencer's gatling gun is actually very impressive. The building and item boxes now bounce around with physics that look funny.

Overall, the new classes give you new toys to play with but it's still EDF.

I never had this much trouble in EDF2, 2017, or 2017 Portable. Those had decent framerates until you got lots of enemies or lots of explosions. In 2025 there can be no enemies on screen but when I let go of my stick my aiming reticle will keep moving. It's making playing the game on a basic level somewhat difficult since I can't even aim right.

why does EDF cost $50

I was full-trottle for this until I saw that price tag. I know saying that sounds dumb, but isn't the whole appeal of EDF supposed to be that it's an unpolished joke budget game that's about enough fun to last as long as a large pizza?

This is the general impression people have of the game from the outside but when you play past the game's opening levels it becomes a legitimately challenging game. Once the game changes the enemies to stronger variants (such as Red Ants), where they have significantly more life and do more damage, you have to start preparing legitimate strategies for tackling each level based on the environment, enemy types, and enemy layout. The game gives you a large armory and you see all these wacky weapons like 3-Way Rocket Launchers and rocket launcher with huge explosions; an at-a-glance impression would be Bigger is Better or choose whatever you think looks funny. But the variation in weapon stats (range, reload time, rate of fire, strength, coverage) become more pronounced and critical when you reach these stronger enemies. You want range so you don't get crowded by enemies; you want a fast reload time so you can keep shooting, you want a fast rate of fire so you can keep shooting faster, you want strength so you can kill things before they reach you, and you want coverage so you can kill more things at once. But you're limited to only two weapons per battle and the stats are actually setup so each weapon has a tradeoff for each good stat.

The 3-Way rocket launchers can hit multiple enemies in a group since it shoots the rockets a wide angle but generally they're pretty weaky and don't have good areas of effect on their explosions. The huge explosion rocket launchers do as much damage as you'd expect but their rates of fire and reload times are attrocious, meaning you can kill a bunch at once but everything still alive has a good 7 seconds to come at you uninhibited. The fact that most weapons only reload while you have them active makes it even more of a handycap since you have to run around defenseless if you want that rocket launcher to reload. In tightly packed enviornments like caves, weapons with big explosion radius' can be both a boon and a hinderance. There are more chances for enemies to be crowded together but there are aslso more chances them to be close to you, causing you to blow yourself up. In cave paths you'are also more likey to only kill the two or three enemies in the front of a long line. The bigger weapons or wide angle rocket launcher can also be hinderances depending on the cave layout because they can be more likely to hit a wall or pillar, either missing the enemy or blowing up in your face. This also applies to city streets with lots of buildings.

In many levels you will also be needing to destroy space ships that spawn enemies, giant robots, ants, and spiders at the same time. For the space ships you might want a sniper rifle, which often have high damage but low rate of fire and long reloads, or long distance rocket launchers which have low damage- but you want something fast since they only open their weakpoint when they spawn new enemies. For the giant robots you often want strong weapons that can make the giant robot bend it's body when hit, messing up it's aim (they shoot giant laser bombs with huge AoE). For ants you want something fast to push back the horde but also appropriate for the enviornment- if the level is crowded with skyscrapers blocking the way of big area weapons you might want to get some sort of machine gun or even shotgun if you're okay with getting close. For spiders you don't want to get close enough so that you can be shot by their webs, they swarm like ants, and they hop a lot which makes them more difficult to hit with slower weapons like rocket launchers. But since you're limited to only two weapons per levels you now need to figure out what playstyle you want to tackle the level with based on what weapons you have and what their stats are. Most of the time your weapons aren't going to be effective for everything you face in the level and you have to develop some sort of strategy to survive.

Pale Wing/Wing Diver is whole other can of worms since her walking speed is terrible but her flying, shooting, and reloading all eat into a single enermy meter, adding a meter management element. The Air Raider in 2025 looks like it's going to be a completely new beast as well since it can only reload 2 of it's 3 equipped weapons by killing enemies with the the third weapon (or vehicles).

I found through my playthroughs of the EDF games that I have had to take a considerable amount of time planning my gameplay, surprisingly moreso than many other games I've played. The game eventually makes you feel like a human soldier fighting an army of giant monsters- you are out of your league and you don't have weapons good enough for what you're facing but you have find a way to survive with what you have available, no matter how inefficient.

Had fun with Drem/PooglyWoogly for one match. That's my crew playing. If you want to co-op with 3 jerks just come on in and join us.

Sorry I had to drop out after one game. I was actually just hopping on for a couple of levels before going to bed so I wasn't able to stay. I also got an invite from Relevant right after I left your room, so sorry I had to turn you down Relevant. Hopefully I can get some games in with you guys later.
