Because "texting" is lower on the commitment ladder than "calling" and she wants to put the burden of upping the commitment level on you, duh.

It is just the modern day, high speed, computerized equivelant of "girls don't ask boys on dates, instead they just try to drop hints that they want to be asked on a date".

And it is still terribly annoying. :-/
