after finishing up the first day, I'd go so far as to call the game good. my main gripe so far is it's actually on the easy side and I've got the difficulty slider thing set to "hardcore". or maybe Jews are hilariously strong (you get an ability where you straight up go to the enemy and start carving the tip and of course it causes a bleed effect and the actual animation for it threw me off the first time I saw it).
man, I'll say this much, they pretty much nailed the whole "it's like watching the show" thing, even if it ends up being a terrible game in the end. bonus points for a section early on with audio logs complaining about audio logs. _________________

The show (along with Evangelion) was a huge part of my teenage identity, but I've been underwhelmed with it in recent years (not sure what combination of me growing up and the show's quality going down to attribute that to), and as an extension of that I've been cynical about the game. This sounds pretty damn fun though. I may just have to look into it. The house-exploration gags might be what sell me on it.
Incidentally last night I rewatched the episode where the boys become school news anchors for the first time in years and I had forgotten how brilliant it was. Definitely one of my all-time top 10. _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |

well, that was a fun game, probably worth a rent or Steam sale pickup at the very least. but man, are the debuffs crazy overpowered. by the last few hours of the game, I was able to apply a full stack of bleed on multiple targets with one attack, which is strong enough to be doing 1/6 to 1/4 of an enemy's health per turn. the only fight in the game that gave me any trouble (again, playing on Hardcore) was the Al Gore boss fight, and that had more to do with getting his Secret Service summons under control.
(since I just posted a decent-sized spoiler for a side quest, let me go ahead and say that if you have any inclination towards playing this game at any point, steer clear of any and all spoilers, mostly because there are some damn funny and fun set pieces sprinkled throughout)
if Obsidian were to, I don't know, patch in some difficulty adjustments, then I'd go ahead and tell people to buy it blind. as it stands, the ease was a bit unsatisfying. _________________

I still don't get any of that, there's way worse stuff left in going off of what they say has been cut. like, you can get Mr. Slave as a summon and he clears the screen by enveloping an enemy in his ass and scaring the rest off and you can totally use this against the group of kindergarten enemies at the park and that's probably several times more offensive then seeing people of various ages being rectally probed. I'm also curious how they handle one of the endgame puzzles, which is a callback to the abortion minigame.
as it stands, if you just want to blow through it, I'd rent it for your funbox of choice or wait for a sale. still a good game, just kinda short and on the easy side. _________________

I watched a friend play this for about an hour yesterday, and it sure cracked me up how if you use Butters to revive someone his magic is just him saying something like "There, there, you're going to be ok." _________________ Drawing & writing, mostly. |

well actually, Chef's Luv Shack looks a hell of a lot like the show and that was ~15 years ago, but it was also terrible and a party game so it doesn't count. it was the 2nd Acclaim game, IIRC, sandwiched between the FPS and South Park Rally. granted, it was nowhere near the scale Stick of Truth is at and the game show/mini-game nature of the game flow stopped it from needing the exact look (mostly animation-wise), but it really does resemble the show. _________________

I still enjoyed the South Park FPS, faults and all. Chicken Rocket Launchers are cool. _________________

The show also looked different 15 years ago than it does now. In my opinion, the ultra-crude, low-budget flash-animation look of the early seasons was a better fit for the tone and content of the series than the more elaborate, CG-heavy animation style used today.
The more abstract style used back then also made a lot of the violent/gross-out gags a lot funnier by way of absurdity compared to similar gags in modern seasons which, thanks to the more detailed animation style, slide closer to the uncanny valley and become more just gross or discomforting. (I still feel like there's some very unpleasant story behind Matt and Trey's apparent obsession with suicide and child abuse, two topics which show up, often graphically, with a regularity that defies the standard territory of shock comedy.)
This is on top of the fact that the continuing relaxation of broadcast/cultural standards around explicit content on TV has, imo, led them to become less creative with their obscenity. Early seasons got a lot of comedic mileage out of implying outrageously obscene things that are a lot less funny and more squirm-inducing when they're just straight-up depicted onscreen.
They also reference real-life commercial brand names these days instead of goofy ersatz brands (e.g. the "Okama Gamesphere"), and that saddens me. _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |
