The show (along with Evangelion) was a huge part of my teenage identity, but I've been underwhelmed with it in recent years (not sure what combination of me growing up and the show's quality going down to attribute that to), and as an extension of that I've been cynical about the game. This sounds pretty damn fun though. I may just have to look into it. The house-exploration gags might be what sell me on it.
Incidentally last night I rewatched the episode where the boys become school news anchors for the first time in years and I had forgotten how brilliant it was. Definitely one of my all-time top 10. _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |

The show also looked different 15 years ago than it does now. In my opinion, the ultra-crude, low-budget flash-animation look of the early seasons was a better fit for the tone and content of the series than the more elaborate, CG-heavy animation style used today.
The more abstract style used back then also made a lot of the violent/gross-out gags a lot funnier by way of absurdity compared to similar gags in modern seasons which, thanks to the more detailed animation style, slide closer to the uncanny valley and become more just gross or discomforting. (I still feel like there's some very unpleasant story behind Matt and Trey's apparent obsession with suicide and child abuse, two topics which show up, often graphically, with a regularity that defies the standard territory of shock comedy.)
This is on top of the fact that the continuing relaxation of broadcast/cultural standards around explicit content on TV has, imo, led them to become less creative with their obscenity. Early seasons got a lot of comedic mileage out of implying outrageously obscene things that are a lot less funny and more squirm-inducing when they're just straight-up depicted onscreen.
They also reference real-life commercial brand names these days instead of goofy ersatz brands (e.g. the "Okama Gamesphere"), and that saddens me. _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |
