sawtooth's been (if I understand correctly) inserting random garbage into SMB roms, and posting the more interesting results here: http://sawtooth.ptoing.net/misc/nes/. These are from proceduralglitch3 dot nes.

The great thing about SMB1 is that you can just go around corrupting random parts of the ROM and it still ends up as an acceptable game. _________________

It doesn't show up in the stills, but sometimes truly amazing things happen in this one when the game apparently runs out of memory (I'm using an emulator which is apparently cycle-exact; I don't know what would happen otherwise). I managed to get the enemies and platforms to slow to a crawl in 1-2, while mario and the music behaved normally.

I had my emulator crash once, people have had lock-ups, and once I got stuck because an invisible block made it impossible for me to get through an area with big mario, but yeah, by and large.

I feel a bit like asking a magician how he does his tricks, but....how does one go about inserting said gibberish into the ROM? Do you open it up with notepad and type in "HELLO WORLD" randomly? Do you use a hexeditor of some sort? _________________

well if it's inserting gibberish, then both methods are practically the same thing. maybe cut and paste some code around. I think you might have to keep the filesize exactly the same for it to work.
these are very fun. maybe it depends on your emulator, but so far I've learned to avoid starmen, both times they locked up the game. _________________

I've found with MacFCe It really doesn't matter if there are missing byteseverything will just turn up gibberish (I mean, that's the point of this endeavor, but it's playable gibberish nonetheless). With Nestopia (cycle-exact, and what I'm using so far), a missing bit means it won't boot. Cutting and pasting is my method of choice, and how much and where you cut are important.
Thus far I've amassed about 4 dozen glitched hacks so far, each with different qualities, and I eventually hope to combine the best ones with the help of a nice program that will let me compare two documents, wikipedia-style.
and yeah, I've been using textedit. _________________

Ah, I've got the feeling I'm making some obvious mistake, but trying to edit the rom with either Notepad or edit.com doesn't work, even if all I do is save without editing anything. The former program gives me a file header garbage data error when I open it up in Nestopia, while the latter gives a CPU failed error. I mean, edit (and Wordpad) seem to add extra bytes to the ROM when I save, but Windows swears Notepad didn't change a single byte....!
Is this one of those cases where Mac is superior to PC? :(

ooh yay i guessed the romhacking method
try editpad maybe? it's working for me, so i think it's not doing that annoying header thing.
i just now made a SMB where the question blocks are replaced with letters, and can be grabbed onto by the side like a beanstalk. but the mushroom block crashes the game when hit, so it is a failure.

Which NES emulator is most recommended for this? Would there be different results on different emulators?

Nestopia for Windows has a palette editor, under the video settings. Maybe the OS X version does too?
I think my favorite part in the morio bros hack so far is one of the later underground stages, where it included the thing from killenemies.nes where killin dudes changed the music. It resulted in some of the warped music like what sawtooth linked above, but not as warped. Plus most of the level went gray.

PROTIP
for max weird take a save state in one hack and load it in another
pics coming soon...
Best one yet: getting hit makes me big... hitting a mushroom block freezes the game and you start on world 5, also: crazy graphics _________________

alternately you can just disassemble the rom, find where it writes to $2001, and turn on the monochrome bit on its write. which is probably what happened here, after the top nonscrolling part was drawn.

I played Super mario Bros. sweeeet as far as it seemed possible to go; it was weirdly normal, but there were no enemies except for the first goomba. Then, after jumping over the exit castle (no flagpole!) I ran for a really long time across an empty landscape. I figured it was endless and decided to run until the clock ran out, and then (when there was around 50 seconds left) I found myself confronted with flying koopas, hammer brothers and floating platforms. Wow.
EDIT: Oh and the mushroom retainer was there too. Just chillin'. _________________
