so far none of it seems to be impeding me from basically playing the way i want to, anyway. (btw, can you get access to buying cracked red orbs indefinitely by using an ascetic at the undead purgatory, or is ng+ a must?)

str is fantastic and it seems like you could do all kinds of things with mundane weapons, but there's almost no reason not to use some magic in this game. especially once you're in ng+ and you can restat for a build you find more comfortable.
