yeah, I remember it being more like 1.5x damage in the prior two games whereas here it's like 1.2x. that's not bad for something you can functionally have activated all of the time but needing to have a staff in my left hand is extremely inconvenient (which I can dig, that's a very sensible balancing move and has been throughout the whole series) and so it doesn't seem to be clearly worth it this time around.

I'm scared to read the rest of this thread, but I'm at the starting area and my torch has stopped working (no option to light it at bonfire).

Not really sure what's going on there. Am I just out of torch? I want to light the other pedestals in the beginning area to see if something cool happens.

so I just took a little more time off work in the middle of the day than planned in order to beat the ruin sentinels ... that was just about two hours on the couch. I have to say that I never got tired of the ten mooks that you have to lure out of the building and kite over the broken bridges before the boss -- their pathing is so hilariously bad that getting all of them out there and having them run into each other and off the walls was a great interlude between attempts at what would've been a more frustrating fight otherwise.

i had the opposite experience with all of this, though if i had insisted on fighting the boss without a shield i'm sure it would've taken longer. w/ shield it was pretty easy. as for the mooks you can just sprint right past them and get to the boss in like 30 seconds. i think the ~8 times i did it before going shield i didn't even get a chance to see them on screen. but the down time worked for you so whatever.

yes: basically, you get torches that are just pieces of wood that only last so long before they're totally burnt out, but as you accumulate more it just adds to the timer you see on your inventory menu

it's not Zelda, thankfully. Though there's probably some Zelda-troll reward for lighting torches at one specific part of the game we won't know about for a while.

analogos, this was the first boss that took me more than 3-5 tries, so I didn't mind at all.

speaking of that, i kind of regretted going w/ shield against them so i decided to learn lost sinner well enough to beat him up close shieldless with my 4 VGR hollow and dang that was an often frustrating but pretty rewarding experience.

hey wait a sec: does smashing wooden treasure boxes have a chance of breaking the item inside? i started breaking most brown boxes for fear of traps (and in one case one that was explicitly marked as being such), and i wanna say at least three of the times i did this the contents ended up being Rubbish. when it happened to the one that was marked trap i thought it was just a cruel joke, but now i'm wondering if i've missed out on cool stuff and/or if maybe they just don't put anything too valuable in those boxes or what. hm.

The areas that need torches are really cool!

The Drangleic Sword is my favorite weapon so far. I wish it was easier to upgrade, but I've been pouring upgrades into other stuff and it's still outclassing them.

the more i explored the more the game gave a very strong demon's souls vibe, moreso than dark souls. except slower because we can't have that level of speed anymore.

i count five directions from the start, each of which doesn't seem to intercept the other paths. not sure how i feel about that, honestly, but it's definitely a lot less metrovania-ish now.

also i watched a japanese dark souls 2 video at random and people were cracking helix fossil jokes at the petrified item gift. dammit. (...not that i didn't do the same thing when I saw it on the list...)

even a lot of areas that don't necessarily "need" torches still end up looking really neat when lit up by contrast and/or are still of some potential use. i'm obviously very curious about what could have been, but i'm really not upset by what we ended up with.

Also, but disappointed that the hard leather armor doesn't look as cool as in DS1. I rocked that the whole game because I thought it was badass.

Finger crossed for black leather I guess.

there is a boss that eats you up and then spits you out. with all your equipment removed. you still have it, though, you're just naked.

you can kill it without ever finding that out though.

Anyone want to tell me whether this magic mace I found has any special skeleton-killing properties before I grind the couple STR I need for it?

alternately, anyone want to help with any of the four bosses I'm at? I'm sure you can guess...

you can see special properties on the bottom of the weapon display, that row of five numbers. select button etc

also i don't think it does. sword was tearing up skeletons well enough for me as it was.

yeah still really not feeling these bosses. like, there was some pretty kooky stuff in demons souls but nothing that really compares to jabba the hut and headless mermaid over here.

have a go panning the camera around a bit while standing at the central earthen peak bonfire, some sweet psx grade texture maps going on.

I decided to take a chance on the easiest of the bosses available to me, and opened up like four new areas inside of an hour, including the aforementioned earthen peak

I now finally have a pyromancy trainer but still no apparent way to get my hands on a flame? Not that I badly want one

I'm getting to be curious how big this game is since I'm like 13 hours in and still basically branching outward in every direction. I am really enjoying having so many things I can potentially do at any given time.

even if I were somehow obliged to "objectively" judge the game negatively for its visuals, there is still nothing else out there that gives me so much to work with like this.

also, sunbros!!

Don't have much to say so far, but enjoying the game! Getting my bearings.

Like apfEID said, I sort of wish this was on PS4 (I also don't, because I have no PS4). I get down to 20 frames regularly. I found EH my first time in town. I wish she/her voice were a little more interesting to listen to.

Hope I find a white soapstone soon.

same. also with txtsword in feeling pretty :/ about needing to exhaust every npc's dialogue to get them to move on, very jrpg-in-a-bad-way, especially since the voice acting seems a bit worse this time around and there's barely any context sensitive dialogue to be had in majula.

the combination of branching paths + teleport + fairly linear levels (instead of lots to explore i'm finding a lot of alternate routes that ultimately lead in the same direction and to the same encounters) means there are a lot more interstitial-nothingness areas between actual points of interest that you'll only ever see once. the world doesn't really ~have to be~ intelligently arranged, and so it isn't.

it is neat that this is sort of the logical next-step for the series. we get teleporting and are introduced to old friends, enemies, and areas right up front. do think i prefer the either-or w/r/t straightforward levels vs. metrovania connectedness, and i agree with felix that the world design suffers for failing to commit either way. encounters and enemy placement also seems a bit spotty.

both technically (aforementioned sound and lighting issues, hideous geometry and effect pop-in), and in terms of world design this feels a lot more sloppy than its predecessors in my opinion, and they were pretty janky in their own right. stuff to be patched i guess.

bitching aside i really like this game!! the new combat model seems excellent. dark souls felt to me like a whole new level of polish and focus for From, and this sequel unraveled everything again to get messy and weird.

Oh man oh man

judging from mauve's most recent posts he may be one step ahead of me but I feel like I just found ash lake...

I'm totally at the mid-game peak of exploration right now, I must be, but even so, given that I'm actively avoiding three bosses I know of at the moment and I have four or five new areas to explore, this is nuts.

also, analogos, that item you were concerned about only having one of? I just found three. Any idea where straid went, though? I'm developing a nice little collection of NPCs back in majula (I'm actually surprised From indulged to this extent, but I do enjoy it) but he's nowhere to be found, and I only made one of his weapons...

the chariot, the sinner, and the gargoyles. I'll probably try the last of those first because it isn't totally and immediately panic-inducing, but I feel like I have hours of wandering before I need to do that...

starting to feel as though I may be kiting regular enemies a bit too much with my great magic arrow.

and offal, I pretty much agree 100% with your critical assessment there (though it's increasingly difficult to be critical the more I delve into these exciting and occasionally poorly shaded new areas).

storyline-wise (no real spoilers, just intuition, but spoiler tagged for y'all who are sensitive), it seems fairly clear that this is supposed to be the same world as lordran, and the idea of kingdoms and landmarks being given different names throughout history is nicely alluded to by straid, but there's obviously some confusion as to whether it's before or after the time of gwyn due to the presence of dragons but also certain NPCs looking past their prime -- the blue guardian covenant boss, and the petrified solaire-looking character right in the first forest area.

Anybody reckon Felkin is a poke at the fan-base? You encounter him behind a magical plot wall outdoors in total darkness, sitting a chair staring at a cave wall. If you talk to him without appropriate prerequisites he says 'Leave me alone. I'm interested in one thing. Dark. You haven't the gift'.

maybe i'm just particularly sympathetic to him at the moment (off work for the week, hatefully sick, thermostat problems, sitting here devouring this game)

Also, let the record show that I have hardly ever been on top of a game's first couple weeks after release and been sufficiently enthusiastic to partake in one of these threads as we discover it together~

the last time I remember doing this was honestly shadow of the colossus

man this is great. I'm going to bed.

I realized I had enough souls for the cat ring and thought why not? Barely survived the first fall. When I got the bottom and met what was waiting for me I promptly died and didn't stop laughing for five minutes.

I guess I'll save that for later.

yeah i found the second and used it promptly. haven't encountered a need for another yet. Straid is still right where you found him, only just around the corner. you might imagine what i meant by eff Straid now.

re: level design, i have a lot more seeing and thinking to do, but i guess i feel similarly to both of you so far, so i won't be redundant. but man i will say that it feels like the game just never stops throwing bonfires at you, and even convenience aside the placing of some of them is baffling. the one just before the entrance of the shaded forest has got to be the biggest offender of this. what in the world? a.) it's in the middle of a trapped room with nothing else in it that you're forced to play out if you want to get out of there without warping b.) other than the trap it's basically just a series of green hallways peppered with a handful of fairly basic enemies between the next bonfire and the last. i can't imagine why anyone thought this was necessary or even particularly helpful. the whole first part of that area definitely suffers from that one-use-only interstitial filler area problem pretty bad, really. fortunately what i saw of the terrifying next area it precedes makes up for it.

one cat ring and a million levels later and i still can't survive the first fall. i wonder how long it's going to be before i can considering i don't plan on ever directly leveling up my HP this playthrough.

actually, hell. how much HP do you have right now? maybe if i unhollow...

made it down unhollowed with the cat ring and 16 VGR. reckon you could survive it in the 13-14 range. also be sure to Get Naked. no idea if this actually helps but wearing nothing but helmet seems an appropriate look for the task.
