I'm not sure to what extent you mistyped this but for what it's worth it's actually Magic on int, Lightning on faith, and Dark and Fire that are split (I think Fire may be slightly more int than faith and Dark the reverse, but I can't remember)

Sorry, making all kinds of mistakes today.

Also, blegh, I just figured out that Carhillion of the Fold is now selling unlimited Soul Arrow related abilities. At what point does that change? After you beat the first old one?

You need to wait a second before attacking after a parry. Attacking immediately will only produce a normal attack.
If you're talking just about parrying, yeah, the timing is funky. Not as swift as it was in Dark. I found myself using the shield-break and forward+R2 much, much more than the parry/riposte mechanic.

Yeah, this is the first time in the series I've found shield breaking much more fun and effective than parrying.

Beating ass with a Blacksmith Hammer. The Halberd is still king though.

Been playing a lot of co-op in Bastille, cuz why not (and also I'll be god damned if I'm fighting a triple-team by myself). Man, there are a lot of people what are not very good at this game. Hard to get your body back when the host keeps dying on the Sentinels even though you're tanking two and he only has to deal with one...

Does anyone have pro melee strats for Royal Rat Authority?

complaints in spoilers: I don't have enough time to kill the little guys with arrows or knives and the best I can ever do is killing 2 or 3 of the 4 with a broad stroke of a greatsword or something, mostly since they're so fucking short my attacks just go over them; I tried wildly punching without locking on once and scored absolutely no hits due to their Odd Job bullshit.

I can't really fight the boss at all if they're still around once he starts attacking and it's hard to divide my attention since he never stops doing that damn charge move.

Do items that reduce poison's effectiveness also work for toxic?

So real quick, does anyone who had some trouble running Dark Souls on PC have any input on how this runs comparatively? A little better, a little less taxing? I have two machines that can run Dark Souls a little choppily at very low settings, and might pick up Dark Souls II this Christmas when it's $6 on Steam.

What's your CPU and GPU?

*if you don't know, type "dxdiag" into the start menu and open the exe that comes up from the search. Say "no" to driver signing prompt or whatever.

first tab will tell you the CPU, "display" tab will tell you the GPU.

---------------------------
I have a pretty good midrange system and a lot of hardware experience in general. I can say that Ds2 runs more easily than Ds1 and the minimum specs listed on steam, etc, are a little too safe. I wouldn't be surprised is something as old as a 3870 would be plenty, for 720p. I still have mine sitting on a shelf and used to run console ports on it, such as Mass Effect.

I miiiiggght build up a system with it, soon. I've got a core2quad sitting around, as well, and have been wondering how that and a 3870 would run some current games.

In Ds1, with my current system (AMD Phenom II X6 + Radeon HD7870), I had trouble running 1080p during invasions or co-op, although singleplayer was fine/fast. In Ds2, I'm running double 1080p (4k I guess?) and have had no additional slowdown during co-op. I haven't been invaded, yet.

I think it only shows up if you light it at a bonfire, you can cycle to it by hitting Y at bonfire when it prompts you to sit with A.

Man, you know what? I dunno why I ever ignored Faith builds in the past (oh wait yeah I do: DS1 is why). They fixed it, and boy did they ever. Having too much fun with this to ever go back to straight melee or Sorc.

I feel like a lot of these places should be giant 90s pc crpg labyrinths (the places and mood of the game remind me of anvil of dawn a lot) and then you get there and it's a just a goofy little playground area like iron keep.

Demon's was much closer to that than Dark was, even -- I think it's more the preponderance of exceptionally goofy areas like Iron Keep in DkS2 that invite complaint. but I think we started to touch on "is it still a good metrovania" in the other thread?

It's totally optional, the only reason to go in there is if you want to enjoy the PvP interplay (and once you get used to it, it's not as bad as it initially appears) or you're a diehard completionist -- if it's the latter, then play through it offline if you can't stand the invasions.

I actually did a lot of Belfry with my current character and it's been really fun -- first run I waited in the room with the lockstone until I could see a summon sign on the bridge, scooted out, summoned, then actually went through ringing the bell and heading to the boss (where I died) without being invaded. Once the door in front of the boss fog is gone, it's quite easy to just sprint past the Bellkeepers/Gray Spirits and go to the boss bottle. I still stuck around and did some duels just to work on PvP, except when one Spirit decided that instead of waiting on the stairs, they were going to do a 2v1, so I just sprinted past them, through the fog door, then Homeward Boned.

also beating the boss there makes the end boss from that path much easier

The difference isn't enough to make it mandatory though, and if you really want to make that fight easier, summoning will do the job as well.

What do you take me for, an idiot.

I am a completionist in Souls games, though. The whole thrill of the game comes from exploration, I'll be damned if there's a thing I won't explore.

Instead I went through Hunter's Copse. Some chump decided to invade me and I literally didn't see him for like 10 minutes while I cleared the level. He finally tried to attack me in that gauntlet at the end where all those big mummy dues jump down off the pillars. I killed each mob and ground him down each time, and he would run off behind the next one again. After I killed them all he stoned out like a wuss.

Made me feel good after getting manhandled in the Belfry like five times in a row. I'm really no good at PVP. Course I never really wanted to be. These people with their magic and their elemental weapons.

Now I need to get up the nerve to fight those gargoyles :/

They're totally destroying me every time I try, what's their secret.

They're rough for pure melee characters, as you're going to be fighting more than one for 95% of the fight. Ranged characters, just play defense, get them all clustered at one end, run to the other end, get off as many easy hits as you can as they rush over to you, rinse, wash repeat.

Concentrate on damaging one of them at a time. Two spawn right at the start, a third spawns at 90% on the boss health bar, then another at 70% and then a third at 50%. So if you spread around your damage you can wind up facing 4 or 5 at the same time, which is rough. If you're high-DPS, you can blast the one that spawns to your left right off the bat; otherwise, the general strategy should be trying to keep them to only 2 at a time, then concentrate on getting on good hits on one of them. Once they get below 50% on their individual bars, they like to breath fire, either in a 180 degree arc on the ground or flying up in the air -- if they do it on the ground, they're a sitting duck for running around behind them and giving 'em a smack.

It's a lot easier if you can at least one summon so that you can trade off dealing damage and tanking attacks.

I've been doing most of the bosses co-op. This is a big change from Demon's and Dark 1, where I took great pride in beating all the bosses myself with a melee character.

I dunno, a lot of them have an "I get it" pattern where I just don't feel like doing all the waiting in between when I can poke. Jolly co-operation makes it go faster. I'm having a lot of fun with it this time around.

I'm at Earthen Peak and cheated cause I was getting antsy about being able to infuse stuff. Apparently the thing I need is right in the next area, so that's good.

I feel this way too, but co-op actually works in this game so that contributes a lot to it for me.

Waiting to unlock McDuff so I can get the royal kite shield, 100% PHY and 2lbs lighter. But since my emphasis this time is NOT on tanking and blocking, maybe I'll stick to best magic/status defense instead.

Does anyone have exact information on how scaling works with weapons/spells/armor in this game? There seems to be a lot of conflict on the wiki due to scaling not seeming to be normalized for all types of weapons (that is, not all scaling on Ultra Greatswords is consistent).

The only thing that has really bugged me so far is that certain boss encounters don't seem like they were intended to be soloable for certain build types (Ruin Sentinels seem particularly egregious. I know that they are technically beatable with a solo naked Sorcerer using just spells, but god the level of technical expertise you need with rolling is ridiculous and they become so much easier with just one other person helping). On the other hand it also seems like certain encounters were (maybe intentionally) made to be destroyed by certain builds. (The Dragon Shrine in particular is made a joke if you have spells/bows - I now know that Dragons are extremely weak to spells though so that was just a weakness I was accidentally exploiting my first time through that area).

Also this has been my first time through with a melee character and fuck those stupid exploding jumpy zombies in the Lost Bastille. God those guys are just pure obnoxiousness, made worse by the fact that they die in one hit to everything so they are another technical space challenge more than an "this enemy is tough" challenge. In that sense the design does seem much more built around the areas encounters exist in and thus combat feels more tense, but it still feels like the AI is reactive and the times when it seems adaptive is when the game's at its best. I find it frustrating how much less important rolling feels in this game as a result of enemies like these zombies whose body explosion makes your roll effectively useless and your predictive capability with regards to their attacks more important.

Agreed, this has a lot to do with it. I mean when I put a sign down I get summoned within 15-30 seconds without fail. And there's always tons of signs around when I'm human, and when I click on them they actually work! This was way not true of prior D'Souls games.

It definitely makes me want to do a full co-op playthrough with a dedicated partner after I'm done, which is another tradition of mine in these games. Never fully realized in Dark 1 because of how shitty co-oping worked on a technical level in that game.

A month into the console release you hardly see signs* so enjoy it while it lasts.

*- everyone is super hungry for signs so scoops them the second they appear or .
