i'd gotten into the habit of naming my characters after their builds, too...

I keep entering the world of STEVEN or KEVIN or boring stuff like that, it's hilarious.

This also means you can put spaces in your name and possibly impersonate NPCs.

Yeah, I summoned Havel the Rock last night, who is apparently a guy in a leather tabard and no helmet two-handing a broadsword.

Oh yes, who then managed to nail me with the ballista during the Pursuer fight, which happened three times last night as the host, to the point where the next time, I ran in and got him to smash both of them right off the bat. If there was a gesture for "we are doing this the Right Way dammit" I would have used it.

There are bloodstains EVERYWHERE. It's actually a little hilarious.

But, combined with all of the messages, I really wish I could press L3 or you know, a button to toggle bloodstain/message prompts on/off.

I accidentally killed the other phantom a dude summoned the same way, scratchmonkey. But it was okay, we finished the fight the right way.

Losing a summon that way is reasonable, possibly even a valid strategy. Never the host, though. That's Bad Form.

just watched some yourtubbing of DkS2

looks like the colours in Forest of the Fallen Giants and Harvest Valley are 90% fixed, thereby obviating all of the real visual issues there. couldn't find a recording of anyone at Earthen Peak or Aldia's Keep yet but extrapolating from the prior two I think it's probably safe to assume those have that little bit of sorely needed depth fixing as well.

that pretty much leaves Shaded Woods as the only really visually crummy area. and it has terrible level design too! so, hey, safe to write off Shaded Woods as the game's sole low point.

I think my first two summons of Dark Souls 2 were Pursuer fights and in both my phantoms killed me.

So what's the weakest system anyone is running this on? I meet the minimum requirements, but I'm not sure if it's worth it since I've got an Xbox copy already.

Isn't the minimum listed as a 5870?-----Yeah that's overkill.

Took me a moment to figure out the durability thing. Interesting. I guess it incentivizes you to carry multiple weapons.

Still exploring this fortress thing in the Forest of the Giants. Lots of locked doors.

Doing the thing I always do and doing my first playthrough with a no-magic character. I picked Knight because I dunno why. Looks most like the Temple Knight.

Still figuring out the hollow system. Your max health lowers slightly with each death, I assume to incentivize you to try and get human instead of staying hollow the whole game. I wonder if there's a lower limit.

50% of max hp: Being Hollowed and Cursed was rolled together in DkS2

It's kind of ridiculous that you can get unhollowed by co-oping against a boss, and you get souls for it and you don't lose anything if you die in coop. There's not really any reason to remain hollowed in this game.

I tried out Knight for a while and enjoyed it quite a bit. I switched to a new char and am really liking Cleric so far... just feels a lot better to play as. Sorcerer just doesn't feel the same anymore. The thing is, it still seems like a casting speed issue more than a fighting style issue. You just can't cast spells fast enough anymore and Pyromancy isn't there to give you a bubble for up-close physical encounters.

I like it!

I don't think I ever needed to repair in the field one single time, in Dark Souls 1. You could run around for hours, without worry, with all but the most fragile gear. Hell, even Crystal gear, which was supposed to be nigh unrepairable---would take for ever to wear down.

Demon's Souls was somewhat similar. Although I do remember repairing in the field a few times, there. Albeit after long expeditions into the depths of a mountain, or what have you.

In Dark Souls 2, you may not have to worry about spending souls on repairs-----but your stuff wears down WAAY more quickly. Early in the game, I'm having to carry two main weapons, to comfortably move around for medium amounts of time. So far, I like it. keeps me on my toes a little more, even as an experienced player.

*unfortunately, my theory about the model detail sliders increasing the distance for animation culling seem to be wrong. I've got the game maxed and last night by the river in Forest of Fallen Giants, a couple of hollow soldiers were doing the robot : \

Had two problems with delayed inputs today, which resulted in my death a couple of seconds later : \

Also had my weapon deflect off stuff I wasn't expecting, only to find entire rooms/caves where the walls have no hit detection : \\

So I'm really liking the implications of the new setup for weapons in terms of durability, how many you can carry, effectivenes of different damage types, etc. It remains to see how well this pans out. But, I think this game may have more long term depth than both previous games.

Dark Souls 2 feels like it was made by some of the Armored Core team.

I've been playing as a Cleric with a +5 mace, bells, and some sweet looking armor. Steamrolled most of the bosses so far but two were pretty tough! I ended up summoning an NPC for ruin sentinels and laughed my butt off as the boss wigged out while I chucked lightning spears. Trying to figure out how to join the covenant where you help people due to my healing miracles but I think I need to be summoned more first or something.

Game looks great, definitely the best of "last gen" kind of graphics. Not overly filled with post-processing, high texture detail mostly, and actual dynamic light rays unlike the funky ones from the first game. Running the game downsampled from 4K with everything maxed out at constant 60 FPS helps too, especially from a $600 PC from a few years ago!

What videocard are you rocking?

My 7870 is only good for double 1080p (3840x2160) and still maintain 60fps. Makes the grass look better...

*I have to turn off ambient occlusion, though. Well, at least Asmodean's higher quality version which Durante put in his new mod. Not a big deal, however. It's a very subtle effect for the performance it demands.

My current laptop isn't really hefty enough to run this at the level I'd prefer, but I gave this an offline hour or so

I strongly dislike having to mouse/key this, will not be doing so again

Tone, level design etc. immediately seem more weird and dreamlike than DkS. There's a coherence but it feels more poetic than factual, I'm into this

I don't get the parry timing, and this is annoying as loved to parry last time

I've got the fancier version of the 7870 they came out with using the 7900 architecture, forget the exact name.

Well, it's really a callback to Demon's, where being in soul form gave you 50% hp. Except there's no Cling Ring this time; instead your max health goes down slightly with each death. Encourages not-dying, which is cool.

As for no penalties for co-op and getting your body back, that is identical. The advantage to staying hollowed/soulform is that you can't be invaded. (I mean, I assume it's the same in this one.)

Well...there is an equivalent to the Cling Ring. Shows up a bit later and is a little easier to find.

I can confirm that you can be invaded while hollowed. I think that being hollowed lowers your chance of being invaded compared with being human; that's not anything I've been able to confirm though.

Hehe. So I'm going to go nuts and after hearing that you can in fact beat this game with a Naked Sorcerer, I've decided that I'm going to go for broke and try to do (something) like this, after having completed about half the game (I think?) on other chars. Haven't gotten through certain areas, but I want to get a bit more intimate with the dodge system than I currently am.

It's strange but I kind of feel odd spending time playing Cleric, because in my head I wanted the first time beating this to be with a Sorcerer. I expect it will be really tough, but knowing it can be done makes me want to give it a shot. See here (not a huge amount of spoilers, in fact it's interesting to note that you mostly just use starting equipment aside from a few notable bonuses)

Though apparently the "hump" for Sorcerers is (the Tower of Haidies)

Other spoilers - I've played my Cleric up to Iron Keep but haven't been able to beat Old Demon King and I've felt frustrated with my Cleric since about the time I got to Iron Keep.

Ugh I'm still way in the early game and have been having trouble with the three ruin sentinels.

When I assist another player in beating them it's a cakewalk but whenever I call upon help and try to beat them myself I get trashed in seconds.

Those pigs are assholes.

I'm liking the Sorcerer actually, I think before I was just a bit too gung-ho with regards to playstyle. Taking a more measured approach seems better.

Wait till you get Vengarl's helm, you have your vengeance, in this life or the next. But yeah I copped this even tho I've yet to beat it on PS3 (will do!). Funny thing, I took this screenshot to show off the phantom I'd summoned. He gamed the char creator to give himself a straight up Mario moustache with nose to match. And yet...

Found the Cling Ring.

Beat a boss, two actually, but still haven't got my body back. Dunno what gives.

Foregoing magic is pretty awesome. Pump that Vigor, Vit and End. Yum.

Halberd rocks socks, even at just +3.

I'm real puzzled by all the bloodstains I see in Majula. Those pigs are annoying sure but aren't that dangerous.

Is there supposed to be something to do with the guy in white armor in the Giants Forest area up a ladder with other undeads around him? He just sits there chilling and gives no prompt to talk to him. I'm wondering if he might be sleeping and can be kicked awake like Frampt.

I have to say I'm not really digging the undead look in this game. To much generic zombie as apposed the dried out husk style of DkS. All the zombie moans for generic enemies gets aggravating quite quickly.
