i like noticing these little things that, though it wasn't clear at the time, were prototypes for later things. alternatively, elements in games that are clearly direct evolutions of elements in earlier games.

a big example is the heart gold/soul silver pokewalker: the pedometer and its volts are clear precursors to the 3ds' playcoins, and the infrared link-up is like a very primitive version of streetpass.

treasure also do a ton of this:
radiant silvergun's 3-colour chaining was streamlined into ikaruga's 2-colour chaining.
tiny toon adventures feels like it could be an early beta for astro boy: omega factor.
the fixed shot/free shot choice has a clear path of evolution starting in gunstar heroes, through alien soldier and gunstar super heroes.
their fighting games also have a very clear path, through yu yu hakusho, guardian heroes' vs mode and their bleach games.
even advance guardian heroes' countering has clear roots in alien older's counter force

this even loops in the added control setup in the XBLA GH port, which adds in controls from the bleach games, basically.
