hitbox's servers aren't prepared for anything close to twitch's userbase, their infrastructure is years behind

Seriously though this should be setting off massive anti-trust alarm bells

it's only a rumor at this stage. they're apparently in talks but nothing actually confirmed yet.

personal opinion: don't make me use or link to google plus and i'm okay with it. so odds are i won't be okay with whatever it is they do because they just love getting g+ in everything. (honestly if google would both not mandate g+ and also localize the effects of infractions to their respective services, i'd be a-okay using everything. but that would make sense and be friendly.)

at the very least it would mean twitch could hire a real support staff instead of random people going around shutting down channels on a whim... instead we just get contentid killing everything. and horrible 'flat' page design. hooray.

hitbox is a pretty nice service but yeah it couldn't handle a tiny fraction of twitch's load.

it's not anti-trust because there's already other established services with a large professional clientbase and custom solutions galore

YouTube won't usurp those

real talk ~2/3 years ago people would be thrilled about this

i used to think that even if their software & services were largely junk google had expertly cultivated the """tech press""" / nerd groupthink that they were the defenders of ~freedom~, some kind of non-profit eff-like fighting the evil apple walled garden that threatened to envelope everything; nerds would roll their eyes at "you're not the customer, you're the product being sold" & eagerly sign up for their next me-too

but lol at how quickly they burnt that goodwill, just a fluke i guess

oh, who the fuck am I kidding

there's already new sites for game streaming, but people stay at Twitch because the audience is there and they don't flake on payments (which is what supposedly helped kill own3d).

hey, who knows, maybe Nico will try the English-speaking market again or Ustream will be a place for something other than people fucking in front of their PS4s.

nico live streaming is not going to win any friends over here unless they seriously change their model.

how it works:
- you need premium to stream at all.
- if you want to stream in larger than 30 minute chunks, you need to pay for it if it's at prime time.
- same goes for having quality bit rate.
- once viewers exceeds a certain level, non-premium viewers are automatically kicked out.

ha ha ha

I know of all of nico's wackiness, I paid the princely sum of 75 cents for premium on their failed English thing so I could fail to get into streams on my Vita

nothing says "Worth it" like watching Russian state news and Japanese playing LoL at work

Google has started backing down from G+, consequently causing G+'s daddy to leave company, so I think we can possibly hold off our fears of forced G+ integration for the moment. I hope this leads to Twitch getting a competent and reliable infrastructure and possibly someday staff who don't come off as amateurs. I do wonder what this means for YouTube's LiveStreaming feature that hasn't gotten much publicity or emphasis from Google.

Yeah the odd thing on my mind for the past day, for one of if not the largest streaming and esports game in town, 1b seems low.

It looks like Nintendo will be requiring permission for you to play their games on Youtube so they can share the revenue. Hopefully this only effects people who want to make money off their videos. It would suck if this eventually meant people couldn't speedrun emulated Nintendo games on Twitch or had to follow some weird code of conduct to play Mario Party or whatever

It's still theft even if you give it away after you steal it! All that gameplay belongs to Nintendo, you're just borrowing it.

It's interesting how bad Nintendo is at acknowledging that human beings living in the 21st century play their games.

Hey so

http://blog.twitch.tv/2014/08/update-changes-to-vods-on-twitch/#comment-1530506795
http://blog.twitch.tv/2014/08/3136/

-twitch vods 'save forever' option removed permanently
-past broadcasts will be deleted after 14 days
-highlights restricted to 2 hours in length
-ContentID system enabled, will mute your vod if said vod contains flagged audio
-it will remain muted if you export to youtube

list of flagged audio includes: (all real examples)
-actual in-game audio (Mike Tyson Punch Out)
-as well as the radio in games like GTA
-as well as some dude singing a copyrighted song (honzogonzo)
-as well as indie musicians performing music they own the rights to (@zirconst)
-as well as Valve streaming the International (contains music from Dota)
-as well as Riot streaming the LCS (contains music from LoL)
-as well as Twitch streaming Twitch Weekly (???)
-if your vod is flagged in any section, the entire 30 minute section of video will be muted

popular speedrunners have already started moving to hitbox.tv, including adamak and peaches. 90% of adam's vods are now muted, because he plays GTA and the radio music is flagged under ContentID

reminder that google employees believe themselves to be supreme beings dragged down by oppressive 'non-technical' rubes outside of the bay area & have unironically petitioned for eric schmidt to be installed as ceo of america

apparently a number of musicians that have specifically not registered their content with audible magic are getting their stuff flagged. most notably dannyb and zircon.

seems that anything submitted to soundcloud is automatically included in these claims.

i'd have a lot more respect for audio related copyright claims if every middleman involved wasn't essentially acting like a bunch of thugs

I agree - I don't necessarily think Amazon is "better" by any stretch of the word but this strikes me as more interesting, if that makes sense.

I don't get how Twitch does anything for amazon? Maybe it's an ad space thing? If someone gets the link besides it just being an acquisition fill me in.
