http://www.ign.com/top/games-of-a-generation

this is a really shit list. you can do better!

- Must be during the 360/ps3/wii era. PC games should also fall within this era
- backwards-compatible games and remakes from previous generations don't count, unless they bring something new to the table. use your judgment
- have fun!

I dunno

Crusader Kings 2
Souls series of games
Crackdown
Fallout New Vegas
Portal
Waking Mars
Nidhogg
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl
Knytt Stories

that pretty much covers it

There are gaps there moreso from not having played the games in those gaps (though I didn't like Papers Please).

Not a great one, and of course the all ambitious-if-cheaply-produced PC and smartphone stuff makes the borders of 'last/current gen' a bit fuzzier

Top of head:

Knytt Stories as urindieplatformspiel, still into what it did a lot
Portal was tight
Gears 3 multi was lot of fun for several months but the solo in all of them was rarely above irritating and/or bloated
For raw time on the the internal clock I have to endorse Dork Souls
Echochrome
Modern Warfare is sort of vital to the discourse, for good or ill

I don't think any single title has been as interesting as the noise

I'd like to hear defenses of DDP DFK and Strania. DFK is my least favorite DDP.

If Felix is putting Rockman 4 Minus Infinity on a list (heck yeah!) then I get to put Gunlord (NeoGeo, Dreamcast). It's probably the best last Dreamcast game since...Under Defeat? Sturmwind gets an honorable mention for being delayed for god damn years and coming out and actually be suprisingly good.Mode

At this point most people know my love for Deathsmiles, Dog Days, Nier, Red Dead Redemption. 2010 was a heck yeah of a year for games.

Tim and company made a heck of a thing with Ziggurat.

Modern Warfare 1 and 2 for FP Shootmans.

Yakuza series in general for being the most pleasant time sinkers. Very rarely felt annoyed at how much of my time they wasted due to the small world size.

FF Type Zero and Resonance of Fate aren't games I've spent a whole lot of time on but think about a whole lot as great JRPGs.

I'm not sure I could put Sin and Punishment 2 on a list of the best as much as I want to. I certainly wouldn't put any of Nintendo's Wii output.

Nier was a deliberate omission from mine (even though I really dig the visual novel and isometric dungeons and the visual design of the bosses and even if the Kobo Abe stuff it pulls out in its first and last hour hasn't much been seen this side of Mother 3 and even if this comes across as me lacking an appreciation for Weird Japanese Games it still bugged me too much that it was a C game when it could've been a fantastic B game). See also: El Shaddai.

ditto Resonance of Fate, it was definitely inspired and worth the look that I gave it but structurally it didn't quite get far enough past the repetitive jRPG treadmill

Ziggurat was not a deliberate omission, though, that totally should've been on mine.

I enjoyed the Yakuza 4(?) demo I tried from PSN recently a lot more than I expected to (insofar as it's just the combat) which made me want to give the series another shot after I was appalled at how un-Nagoshi-like the first PS2 title felt eight years ago, but I cleverly told myself I'd wait for 5 which is apparently never being localized.

I think skate might be the most viscerally compelling game of the last console generation and was immediately put off by skate 2 and never played skate 3. What am I missing here?

The only Skate I liked was the demo of .skate.

I got stuck in every single Skate game because ollie height was based on how fast you can move your thumb and I couldn't pass a mission that required a higher ollie than I could physically do.

Good games for fucking around in, I guess.

Why would you single out a console's entire library? You better have a very good reason for this.

IGN's list has Xenoblade Chronicles, so it's good enough for me. And hey, it has all the Souls games! Then again, it does have Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword...

Yakuza 4 is all right but honestly doesn't improve over 3 in any way. In fact, it's actually significantly easier than 3 for the most part, which is kind of a bummer.

Play 3.

so with that and Ziggurat I'm at an even 60.

As the awful dude at the awful game store said I didn't have a "real" console this cycle, so my list probably makes me look out of touch.

Rock Band 3
Dark Souls
Saints Row 2 (slightly edging out 3 and 4)
Left 4 Dead 1 (in introducing more reasons to break up the players in 2, I felt it lost the experiment in forced online co-op feel)
No More Heroes
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Fallout: New Vegas
Gone Home
Hotline Miami
Wii Sports
Bangai-o Spirits
Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden

I'm still catching up on all those Wii RPGs, otherwise I'm sure they'd be there too.
iOS stuff isn't jumping out at me. I loved Sword and Sworcey, but never finished it. Draw Something was great fun but that was completely in the context of a since fading friendship. Ziggurat was really impressive, but I never broke through that score wall and got burnt out. I spent more time than I should have with those stripped down versions of Devil May Cry 4 and RE:Mercenaries that felt like they should have been the coolest PS1 games. That AR RPG game from Atlus that seemed like a hazy second hand glimpse into the future?

also, here is how damn likeable Nier is in spite of its mostly C-grade mechanics: after posting that yesterday and looking over the Drakengard 3 thread today I've been absentmindedly watching Nier videos on yourtub and wondering if I should give NG+ another shot but with a third spell mapped in place of block because the block is such a crappy mechanic. this would require me to get a new copy of Nier because it was literally the only PS3 game I owned a hard copy of and I sold it once I was done because it's getting sort of valuable.

Can't believe I forgot the Club. I think that was my first last gen game. Bought it right after getting a shiny new laptop with decent graphics capabilities. Absolutely beautiful game. Didn't Bizarre do a 007 game on the DS that borrowed some aspects of it?

Nier was a pretty mediocre game. I liked some small parts of it but overall the gimmicks of homages to many different genres in the various dungeons was overshadowed by the poor mechanics and the incoherent anime plot.

Still, decent voice acting, sometimes fun writing, awful art direction/character designs/visuals

So I guess what I'm saying is it is most certainly a C-game instead of a B-game.

Yup. But even most mainstream reviewers correctly identify it as profoundly likeable in spite of itself. Even where the plot is mostly jRPG crap apart from some more spirited stuff peppered in and at the end, the voice acting and the script seem better by contrast.

I actually don't think the art direction or the visuals are particularly bad, for that matter; they're one of the high points for me. the game is spare, and some parts are bland, but equally many are pretty dang interesting, and mid-generation spare was actually better than early-generation spare or late-generation spare.

Skate 2 I think fudged with the physics and such ever so slightly to make things a tad more manageable. I don't know if that is actually true or it is just my mind playing tricks on me but it was the impression I was left with.

Skate 3's base game and city was probably the least of the 3 (they got rid of one big city and instead gave you three smaller ones) but they did have a "hardcore mode" where they made the physics as realistic as they could manage with all the assists turned off, assists mainly being the slight homing assist the game gave when jumping towards a rail and such. It was a bit too much for me in complete honesty but if you felt something was off in 2 then it might be worth investigating. I believe there is a demo available.

Yeah, the Wii's software lineup sucks. I find it hard to come up with something.

I guess Wii Sports Resort was the perfect party game. Maybe Smash Bros too?

It also saw some great arcade conversions like Ghost Squad, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom or Octomania.

I guess the Trauma Center games are better on DS and Monster Hunter is better on PSP?

I really liked the Fire Emblem.

Then there's Sin and Punishment 2.

Also, people are mentioning EDF in this thread, and the Wii got what I consider to be the best entry in the series, so there's that.
