Shut up about the fucking Wii, we're not doing a Neogaf-styled 20 questions carry-on about the exact science of how the the Wii was rubbish for most people. |
This response is actually what I'd expect on NeoGAF. _________________ Get Xenoblade Chronicles!

NeoGAF consists pretty much entirely of list threads, though expecting a list thread here to have less aggressive opinions is a bit silly.
I still feel like it would be a far more worthwhile endeavor to go back and play SNES/GBA games over pretty much anything here, with the exception of Barkley (which I forgot on my list). _________________

| Nice thread, as I am just getting reunited with my old PS3 after several years. One game I’m looking forward to trying is Dark Souls 2, but should I start with Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, or go straight into DS2? |

| Definitely play DeS and DkS first. They're better, the evolution of the series is a lot more interesting that way, and DeS is a little unforgiving and graphically rudimentary if you play it last, whereas DkS2 is easiest to appreciate for its mechanical refinements |

If you have all of them available I would do this, but if you don't I actually would recommend playing Dark Souls 2. Some timing windows can be a bit dodgy but otherwise Dark Souls 2 is probably the most mechanically refined. At the same time, it's also the longest so if you want a shorter experience I would recommend the first one, and though it's weird to say that coming back to Demon's Souls, it shows signs of what it "missed" via its iterative process throughout the series. _________________

Thanks all for the replies. All three seem to be easily available so I guess I will go in chronological order. |

had to choose between 360, Wii and DS titles since I only briefly owned a PS3. Interestingly enough I did not list any Wii or DS titles lol _________________ 3DS Friendcode: 2337-3480-4823

I'm not gonna make any claims to the "top" games of the previous gen, but uh, here are a few that I liked:
- Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
- Crysis
- The Darkness
- Canabalt
- Uncharted 2
- No More Heroes
- Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
- Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow/Order of Ecclesia
- Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (the control scheme makes that big a difference)
- Jetpack Joyride
- Ninja Gaiden II/Sigma 2
- Portal
- Hotline Miami
- Metal Gear Acid 2
- Tokyo Jungle
- Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth
Haven't played yet:
- The Last of Us
- Tactics Ogre remake
- The Walking Dead
- Journey
- Lost Odyssey
- Red Dead Redemption
- any Gears game
- any Souls game
- Dead Rising
- New Vegas
- Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
- The Last Story
- Xenoblade
- anything PC and/or Xbox-exclusive _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |

Rudie your enthusiasm for that game has made me curious to play it. I sort of had my eye on it when it came out and it looked intriguingly quirky, but the internet's response was lukewarm so I ended up holding off. If I could get it for cheap somewhere (and didn't have a colossal backlog of games already) I might give it a try. _________________ Just another savage day on Planet Earth. |

no, sir. i agree with this statement 100%. CEDX is too easy. the bombs and the slowmo to prevent death kill any sense of danger or need for consideration.
i bought a joystick just for this game. every version, but the 360 version runs too slow for half my scoring tricks. so i will forever have a 360 on my shelf.

someday i will play this game. it's been on my to-do list forever. after playing punch-out wii, opoona, and trauma team i felt i rounded out the best it had to offer. reginleiv is its own special tier of amazing. ghost squad will always be special to me.
honorable mention goes to castlevania rebirth. i really liked this title on the wiishop! i actually really like the wii. sure there's a ton of things that would now be better served on a smartphone, but it was fun at the time. being unpopular meant (3rd party) games were always cheap. and now serves as a great little emu box. it has the most accurate genesis sound out of any emulator i've used on any platform. _________________

What the fuck is wrong with people, nobody mentioned Street Fighter IV yet??? EASILY the best game of the generation to me.
My other top choices would be something like:
STG division: Eschatos, and pick a Cave SH3 game I'm into at the moment - assuming we're allowing ports from 2004 arcade hardware to count as "last gen". Also rudie you're wrong, Daifukkatsu is great (yeah the auto-bombs and hypers are a bit jarring to get used to), but you like Bullet Soul so there's no accounting for taste :)
Kusoge division: Nier, Deadly Premonition
Portable division: Ys Seven
General: Sleeping Dogs, Bayonetta, Ridge Racer 6&7 (each of these - which are basically the same game - were far and away my favorite first year title for their system)

EDIT: Ah, I overlooked Dishonored until I read this but it really is damn good. And I don't even tend to like first person games. That probably also belongs in my list.
I really like some "bad" games, and totally respect the Bullet Witch decision (I would also nominate Ninja Blade! And I really enjoyed Tenchu Z!), but Vampire Rain?? Wow, I thought I had generally had a tolerance for this kind of game but I can't see any redeeming quality in Vampire Rain. |

A few things I like about Daifukkatsu:
The aesthetics. Nice and easy to see everything, colorful bullets on fairly sleek modern backgrounds, great music (original is good, but the iOS arrange soundtrack is one of my all time favorites), I prefer the more ship-oriented focus to a lot of more character driven stuff (yeah there are robo girl transforming bosses, but it doesn't overdo the moe influence like SDOJ veers pretty close to doing).
The sense of power from the weapons. Not since Batsugun burst onto the scene have I felt quite the same sensation of being in control of such a lethal arsenal. Maybe it's the sheer power of the laser, maybe it's that little "kick" from engaging he hyper, but it just feels exceptionally satisfying to shoot stuff in this game.
I actually find the hyper shot bullet canceling pretty fun in the same way as the reflect mechanics in stuff like Takumi's games (Giga Wing, Mars Matrix), and hyper affecting shot/laser differently is a pretty cool mechanic to me. I appreciate that some people dislike DFK hypers though, but for me as someone who generally plays more for survival than score (I can rarely stay dedicated enough to any one game to get that kind of comfort needed to really shift to score play), it's nice to have that added element of defensive strategy in addition to just bombs.
I'm OK with the auto bomb mechanics here, still plenty of penalty for wasting all your bombs so it just lets you play a little more freely and take risks when you're playing for survival and you're down to 1 bomb in stock. Again though I get that some people are less fond of this mechanic.
What I dislike about Daifukkatsu: those god damned spinning lasers in stage 5... |

Sheesh, there was 4 years and a generation change between NG1 and NG2? Odd. I suppose there was all those different download packs for NG1 that makes my memory think there was more often releases in the series. _________________

I feel like Alpha Protocol is the game I got the most enjoyment out from this generation
Then Souls of course, mostly leaning to Demon right now
Honorable mention to Anarchy Reigns, the best online experience ever for the 1st month when people still didn't figure out how broken it was; I am certain there has to be a parallel universe where Sega is smart and competent enough to recognize the golden goose and people are buying X next-gen console because AR2 is coming out there, after all. |

Oh I'd love to but we never could play AC together right? I am on a stricter schedule right now as well.
Can't really recommend to go find veterans to play because the metagame is right now(...) actually based on slightly execution heavy glitches that of course make the game lose a good part of accessibility.
But sure, if you can find a few like-minded people just playing for fun and not trying to break the game at every occasion, this is the most punchy fun that can be had. |
