I kinda wish I'd gotten more into Alpha 2 back when it was the only GGPO test game, actually. It seemed pretty cool.

oh man, I've been wanting something like this for a while. I was at Gamestop today holding a copy of king of fighters XIII and wishing i knew how to approach fighting games. Maybe after I read your book I'll feel more confident.

I'm reading through it (before YouTube distracted me after watching the short Ryu vs. Ryu video), and I've found a typo:
Quote:
where they won’t be able to move or attack but take no damage (unless
your attack is a special move, in which case they’ll take a little damage
for blocking it.

)

I'm reading this and it's great. I got to the last chapter before realizing it was you who wrote it. Amazing book. I was just looking for some guide to get better at fighthing games after getting all hyped up watching EVO2014 and then I found your book.

aw thanks, i'm glad you like it! i basically wrote it for that exact reason -- to give people who get hype after watching evo every year a way to get into the games.

I beat a local Ken in Shinjuku last night 3 rounds to zip, twice, with Oro's raw normals while drunk and listening to an audiobook of The Neverending Story (which is actually pretty great), all I could really remember being parts of Pat's manual so it definitely works

get a stick. you can get good with a pad (i even know a guy who can beat everyone i know with a fucking keyboard) but the learning curve is completely different. landing a shoryuken with a pad is ten times more difficult than with a stick. and it doesn't hurt your thumbs.

Yeah, I want to. Shoryuken with a pad is maddeningly difficult.

I find it difficult to do the necessary movements with a D-pad, so I use an analog stick.

*everyone backs away slowly*

I tried playing Ikaruga recently using an actual stick. It was a disaster. I can't use a stick.

*everyone runs away, screaming*

yeah, arcade stuff is neat but I'm no great shakes either. I object more to playing a six-button fighting game on a controller without six face buttons than I object to a d-pad.

I think I probably played Gradius V and Ikargua with an analog stick but definitely not any fightmans

and I definitely practice most with a keyboard at any rate, though that's not to say that isn't a handicap. when my friends and I were playing towerfall recently, I had keyboard, and we had several really close sets, then we traded off so I had a controller and I swept the round, to my surprise.
